Ve-ra, some of this leave me baffled. I can't even imagine how the sound!

Kanga83 · 31/05/2019 17:19

Vee-Ra western , Veh-Ra east Europe.

goldensugar2 · 31/05/2019 17:31

But you don't say Veary for Very?!

Or Vearity for Verity?!

I've only heard Vera pronounced Ver-a.

flowery · 31/05/2019 17:35

”But you don't say Veary for Very?!

Or Vearity for Verity?!”

Indeed, that’s because English pronunciation is frequently inconsistent.

tiramisu1 · 31/05/2019 17:39

It's Ver-a in Germany. (Not Vee-ar)

BedraggledBlitz · 31/05/2019 17:43

Rhymes with She-ra (princess of power/Alan's surname)

DramaAlpaca · 31/05/2019 17:48

I agree with Kanga83 on pronunciation.

In the UK it's usually vee-ra, which is hideous.

The European ver-ah is a much nicer sound.

tiramisu1 · 31/05/2019 18:00

The European ver-ah is a much nicer sound

There's no reason Vera can't be pronounced Ver-a in the UK. It would be consistent with very, verity, veritable etc.

Headboardbanging · 31/05/2019 18:10

I’ve only ever heard it -ear
Vera in Russian and other Eastern European countries is pronounced like Vyera

EdithWeston · 31/05/2019 18:18

Vera to rhyme with clearer

As in Duckworth - I think the Corrie character has cornered the market in how the name is said and regarded - she was one of the greats, from the days when it had string characters

JaneGlorianaVillanueva · 31/05/2019 21:10

I've only ever heard it pronounced to rhyme with ear. Or like if you veer off the road and then put an a on the end.

Malyshek · 01/06/2019 08:58

In France it'd be Vehra
In Russia Vyera (means "Faith")

morallybankruptme · 01/06/2019 09:16

It's v ear a
There are no airs and graces with Vera 😂😂😂

V air a will get lots of sniggering and nobody will pronounce it as you like. Remind me of 'mrs bucket v mrs buckét' a la hyacinth.

Sophronia · 01/06/2019 18:59

Veer-a. I like it! I think it will make a comeback.

Tillygetsit · 02/06/2019 22:54

I predict a comeback too I've said it over and over, and like it more each time I've said it!

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 03/06/2019 18:43

V-ear-a

lavenderblues · 03/06/2019 19:14

In Germany it's Vera like Veronika.

TheFallenMadonna · 03/06/2019 19:21

V-ear-a for older people.
V-air-a for younger people, especially if they/their parents' first language isn't English.

lavenderblues · 03/06/2019 22:38

Vera sounds so much nicer than Veera.

SemperIdem · 03/06/2019 22:54

I’d say Vee-ra.

I imagine in most European countries it would be Vey-ra.

It’s infinitely prettier the second way.

Bellabinti · 05/01/2020 00:00

My name is Vera, having been named after Vera Lynn.
My English father called me Vee ra, and my Italian mother called me Vee ra, V-air-a or Verucci (little Vera)Smile

Vera, pronounced like nearer.

HeronLanyon · 05/01/2020 06:59

Ear here
Would air be Northern Ireland pronunciation possibly. Don’t think I have ever heard ‘air’ version other than non English veras.

mathanxiety · 05/01/2020 07:44

To rhyme with ear.

That American woman wasn't saying 'Vaira'. That was a definite ear sound in a southern US accent.

I haven't heard any Americans saying Vaira on purpose as if this was the standard pronunciation. It's Vera with the ear sound, whatever that may be across the country.
