It doesn’t surprise me at all that there are variations in the pronunciation of Vera, though I have only heard the “Veera” version myself. After all there are some Karens who pronounce it so that the “Kar” part rhymes with “air”

TSSDNCOP · 05/01/2020 14:09

You’re going to spend an awfully long time in the uk correcting any pronunciation other than Veer ah as in Duckworth.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2020 14:10

Those saying Vee ra, do you also pronounce Veronica and Verity as Vee ronica and Vee rity? And Very as Vee ry

How do you pronounce tear? Do you pronounce it "teer" or "tare" or both...?

HeronLanyon · 05/01/2020 14:16

soup if I said yes would you be angry ? I
Am so tempted.
Good point but see Katherine/Kate
Marcia/Mary/marianne
Mila/millicent
(Feel I am clutching at straws here).

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/01/2020 14:34

In a Norfolk accent, the two versions of “tear” are pronounced very similarly, but not in mine

SoupDragon · 05/01/2020 15:26

soup if I said yes would you be angry ?

To what? Confused

Poppydaisys · 05/01/2020 16:47

How do you pronounce tear? Do you pronounce it "teer" or "tare" or both...?

Both. To tear up something. And the teardrops or tears.

Whatsyourflava · 05/01/2020 16:49

Rhymes with ear

EssentialHummus · 05/01/2020 16:50

To rhyme with air, but the only one I know is Russian.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2020 16:51

Both

So why are you surprised that people are pronouncing the start of Vera and Verity differently?

HeronLanyon · 05/01/2020 18:23

soup Apols - you were quoting someone else. My post to you made no sense as result.

PetraRabbit · 05/01/2020 19:26

Depends where you live and who you know. t's currently a trendy name in Spain where it's pronounced somewhere between Vair-a and Veh-ra, never Veer-a. In the original Russian there's a definite 'y' sound in the middle. So many famous ones over there.
In the UK almost everyone will say Veer-a with quite a long drawl, rhyming with nearer or dearer. Possibly very young people wouldn't know the name as it was last popular amongst women born in the 1910s and 1920s, so they might guess at Veh-ra.

MaxPaddyandHarry · 05/01/2020 19:30

We had a German exchange student once who was Vera pronounced Vaira.

Poppydaisys · 05/01/2020 21:06

I know a Vera whose full name is Veronica. Both pronounced Ver-a and Ver-onica. And yes, Verity.

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/01/2020 21:12

Well yes if you were shortening Veronica it would make sense that it follows the same pronunciation. Doesn’t stop the “Veera” being extremely common in the UK

Poppydaisys · 05/01/2020 21:28

Doesn't Vera Chang pronounce it Ver a? And also the plant Aloe Ver a?!

I'm therefore really surprised that some pronounce it Veera.

IvinghoeBeacon · 05/01/2020 21:36

I will blow your mind by telling you that some people pronounce aloe vera “aloe veera”

CalleighDoodle · 05/01/2020 21:44

Ver ra

CalleighDoodle · 05/01/2020 21:48

Fuck ive no glasses on. I meant to type vee ra

kevintheorangecarrot · 05/01/2020 22:21

Veer-Ra

Poorolddaddypig · 06/01/2020 07:35

V-ear-a is how it’s pronounced. Surely just because some people choose to pronounce it differently doesn’t mean it has several pronunciations, just means they’re saying it wrong. If I started pronouncing Emily like Ee-mee-lie it wouldn’t mean Emily has two pronunciations, it would just mean that I’d got mine wrong.

NotreDame2009 · 28/03/2020 19:41

The name is originally Russian, meaning "faith", and is pronounced in its native tongue something like VYAIR-ah, with a touch of a rolled "r". It became popular in the West around the turn of the 20th century and, though spelled Vera in English, was commonly pronounced VEER-uh in both the US and UK. This phonetic disconnect has fallen by the wayside in recent times, however. The default international pronunciation VAIR-uh has rapidly gained prominence, lending this once dated name fresh elegance, strength, and sophistication.

cerealnapper · 28/03/2020 19:44

My sister in law is Vera but we pronounce it vaira
