I think that video might just be accent OP? So if that woman said "dear" it would sound like "d-air" to us. If that makes sense.

lucymegan · 31/05/2019 13:13

@MindyStClaire maybe, I'm just pointing out that to the other poster who was persistent that nobody in American pronounced it v-air-a.

MindyStClaire · 31/05/2019 13:18

Yeah but that woman would say she's pronouncing it Vee-ra.

PuppyMonkey · 31/05/2019 13:19

Veera that sounds like bee- ra

MaitlandGirl · 31/05/2019 13:38

it’s pronounced to rhyme with nearer and clearer - or at least that’s how everyone I’ve ever met has pronounced my mums name for the entirety of her life.

If you’re not sure about using the shortened version, why not use Veronica or Veronique?

BlackPrism · 31/05/2019 13:51

Vear-ra

BlackPrism · 31/05/2019 13:52

So... ear

goldensugar2 · 31/05/2019 14:21

I've only ever heard it pronounced Vair-a.

So Vera like Very but with an a.

goldensugar2 · 31/05/2019 14:22

Veera = Veera

Vera = Vera

Sessy19 · 31/05/2019 14:45

My nana was Vera (ear) and this is mn for my daughter, when she gets here later this year 😊

RomanyQueen1 · 31/05/2019 14:47

v ear a (apple)

RomanyQueen1 · 31/05/2019 14:48

There's only one way to pronounce it, think of Vera Duckworth.

LoafofSellotape · 31/05/2019 14:52

With an ear.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 31/05/2019 15:00

Vee-ruh

I think the videos ‘accent’ is confusing. It’s just how the name sounds because of the accent not because of how they say it. If that makes sense!!

We all know Vera Duckworth! And I don’t watch Cornination Street! Only one way to say it!!

GlitterPixie · 31/05/2019 15:42

Ear

Pinkvoid · 31/05/2019 16:02

Ear

museumum · 31/05/2019 16:13

Makes me think of the wonderful Brenda blethyn detective. Pronounced Vee-ra like the letter V. She’s awesome but other people might not think so.

How do you pronounce Vera?
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/05/2019 16:14

Veera although I met a Lithuanian one who way Vay-rahhh

Icklepup · 31/05/2019 16:27

Vear-ra

SenecaFalls · 31/05/2019 17:07

The v-air-a pronunciation might be how Americans say it.

I'm American and I say v-ear-a, as do most Americans. If you think you hear Americans saying it differently, it's likely because they say all similar sounds with a slightly different accent. For example, in some American accents there is not a lot of differentiation between "ear" and "air."
