Anyone picked a really “original” name...

... only to discover it isn’t at all?

I have a Kit. Thought it was a bit quirky and “different” at the time. Even the stats seemed to suggest so.

He’s 2 and I’m hearing it EVERYWHERE. Yet another celebrity has just had one. I still love it of course but isn’t funny how we think we’re being really cool and “original” and actually we’re anything but!

Anyone else have any tales of baby naming woe? Grin

If something was popular once, it will be popular again!

When my generation is dead and gone the world will once more be filled with little Joannes, Rachaels, Karens, Janes, Nicolas, Johns, Waynes, Jasons, Pauls, Peters, Simon etc.

The names of our parents will be the first to resurface next though: Audrey, Katherine, Maureen, Pamela, June, Deborah, Dorothy, Margaret, Christine etc.

I'm waiting for Muriel to make a comeback!

I started Weight Watchers this morning and one of the members had a six year old with the same name as 13-month-Old DS. I mentioned he was the first apart from mine that I'd met who was under the age of 35 and she said there was two others in his class at school!

Skyejuly · 01/06/2019 15:48

What's the name Fairfax?

SmellMySmellbow · 01/06/2019 15:50

I love Kit. My friend had a Kit 7 years ago and first we were all a bit Hmm but then it grew on us, he suits it perfectly and we all love it. I don't know any others yet.

SmellMySmellbow · 01/06/2019 15:51

Clive never comes back. Never met a Clive under 50.

SmellMySmellbow · 01/06/2019 15:55

...@Sissy79 is one of yours Clive?

wheresmymojo · 01/06/2019 16:06

Meh. I'm an 1980s Sarah. Since changes in name trends were slower I think it was in the Top 10 for years and years.

Yes there were other kids at school with the same name but once you leave school and are mixing with all ages I've found it's reasonably rare to come across someone with the same name even if it was super popular.

Other than fleetingly I haven't met another Sarah for years and years (as in, I might meet another Sarah on a day course or something but no friends, family of friends, colleagues, exes of partners, etc have been a Sarah).

Skyejuly · 01/06/2019 17:04

I know a Kit. He's 14.

CallMeCarolDanvers · 01/06/2019 17:35

I seem to be surrounded by adult Ruths wherever I go. According to the chart nobody has been called Ruth since about 1987.

DS and DD have fairly ordinary names but we rarely meet any children with the same name.

Skyejuly · 01/06/2019 21:49

I only know one younger Ruth. In DDs class. Age 13

angeltop · 01/06/2019 22:20

My daughter chose totally off the wall Oscar, twenty five years ago.

foreverone · 01/06/2019 22:24

Winter, Willow, Luna seem to be getting a lot more popular!

angeltop · 01/06/2019 22:56

Walking through the cemetery recently noticed a Dallas born 1896..

Marmite27 · 01/06/2019 22:59

Woman looking cross when she didn’t have the only Matilda in a baby group (there were 3). It’s ridiculously popular round these parts, on par with Thomas, Emily and Oliver!

Also a woman with a Thea. Told her there was one opposite me on the maternity ward, to be told there couldn’t have been because hers was the only one because it was so unusual Hmm it’s a character in Arrow!

People are weird. A friend has just called her son the masculine versions of both my 3 year olds names. My response, ‘great names!’

Marmite27 · 01/06/2019 23:18

@SherlockSays - I’m in Leeds and know two Thea’s under 4, and of a further one - that was in hospital with me when I had DD1. They must just be localised Grin

Fedoratheexploreer · 01/06/2019 23:22

My DS1 is Jude, never heard of a Jude and haven’t met one his age but loads of babies seem to be being called Jude now. DS2 is Jonah, and so far I haven’t heard of any others.

Marmite27 · 01/06/2019 23:32

I know a 4 year old Jonah! It’s a lovely name.

Fedoratheexploreer · 01/06/2019 23:37

Thank you @Marmite27 Grin

I met a baby Elvis about 6 months ago... never met another before!

Willowkoko · 01/06/2019 23:39

My sweet niece is called Elsa, now before the film came out it really was fairly uncommon name, gorgeous name but had mixed reactions when she announced as some people felt it was “too out” there my MIL told my SIL that Elsa would be spelling out her name for the rest of her life as no one would know how to spell it.

My DD has an uncommon city/country name, that people don’t really use for girls names but on our recent holiday there was another girl with the same name, and had the same birthday but a year younger! Spooky.

MummaD209 · 01/06/2019 23:53

I have a baby Pearl. I've yet to meet another one!

Isitmybathtimeyet · 02/06/2019 10:54

Know a small Kit and three small Judes.

I was at school with a Thea and loved it. Was vetoed because the London ‘th’ would have meant being called ‘Fea’ a lot. I’ve met two baby Theas since then.

floraloctopus · 02/06/2019 11:10

I have a baby Pearl. I've yet to meet another one!

Does Pearl have any siblings? I know a baby Pearl.

Pinkarmchair · 02/06/2019 11:11

How do I find out the popularity of my name? I can only find data for the top 100/200 names
