Anyone picked a really “original” name...

... only to discover it isn’t at all?

I have a Kit. Thought it was a bit quirky and “different” at the time. Even the stats seemed to suggest so.

He’s 2 and I’m hearing it EVERYWHERE. Yet another celebrity has just had one. I still love it of course but isn’t funny how we think we’re being really cool and “original” and actually we’re anything but!

Anyone else have any tales of baby naming woe? Grin

Ooo thanks @SundayMorningSun. 11 babies had my name in 2017!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/06/2019 11:30

My children were born in the early 90s. Their contemporaries included quite a few of the names other people on this thread thought were recent revivals:
Bella
Isabel (or possibly Isobel)
Cecily (not mentioned here, I think, but what a lovely name)
Alice
Grace
Arthur
Audrey
Dorothy
Callum
Caleb
Florence
Martha
Thea
Matilda

That's just the ones I can remember. We live in Inner London so maybe trends start here (not with us - our children's names are about as far from original as it's possible to get in the UK Grin).

NeverSayFreelance · 02/06/2019 11:33

I am that child. My parents didn't know anyone with my name and thought it would be really unusual. It turned out to be the most popular girls name that year, and I had 7 other girls with the same name in my year at secondary school😂

agirlhasnonameX · 02/06/2019 11:41

0 babies had my name from 96 to 2017. I'm not crazy on overly popular names but obviously no one else likes my name 😂

DD1 has a semi-popular name and DD2 much less so but there are still a few around. Neither are classic names.

floraloctopus · 02/06/2019 11:59

Both of my names are getting more popular, clearly I am older than I thought if they are having a resurgence Grin

My DCs names are all getting less popular though.

BestIsWest · 02/06/2019 12:08

I’d wanted to use DDs name since I was 17 and had a friend with that name. I thought it was classical but fairly unusual. Of course by the time DD was born it was top 10. I still love it though. DS also had a top 10 name but he was named for someone we knew and again wasn’t too popular when we first chose it 10 years before he was born.

cptartapp · 02/06/2019 12:15

DH cousin called his son Rusty. I often wonder if there's another one somewhere.

Freaking0ut · 02/06/2019 12:22

gasp that’s really interesting, both my children's names are on your list! One has become incredibly popular and the other one we have never met another with it (though she is only 2nso maybe there’s still time)

PetraRabbit · 02/06/2019 12:56

No but for anyone reading I'd be very cautious about using Ted or Teddy. It's rapidly rising out of litetally nowhere, a bit like Noah. Almost every boy I know born this year is either called it or it was shortlisted. I'd be amazed if it doesn't hit top 10 in a few years.

Fedoratheexploreer · 02/06/2019 13:21

@cptartapp I adore the name Rusty, and Dusty for a girl but DH wouldn’t have it. We have very different tastes in names, my all time favourite being Moses for a boy and Aphrodite for a girl and his being David for a boy and Jane for a girl.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/06/2019 14:05

I forgot Dulcie, who I think would be about 27 now. That's still a pretty unusual name.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 02/06/2019 15:15

I actually know a couple of Dulcies - one in school and the other a baby!

Just checked dgs name - less than three were born last year. It's a lovely family name and one which everyone we've told always really likes.

Sissy79 · 02/06/2019 16:17

Oh no, our dog was Dulcie. I know one in RL but every time I see I see a status update on FB about her I always expect the photo to be of a spaniel Grin

Sissy79 · 02/06/2019 16:21

My DS is not Clive. Or Keith. But it’s a similar one. It has never been popular or even considered classic, it’s just an old standard. Like Derek, Brian, Trevor etc.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 02/06/2019 16:51

Is it Baby Neil?

SundayMorningSun · 02/06/2019 17:52

Terence

PotterHead1985 · 02/06/2019 18:27

I have my children's names picked out (although no idea when/if I'll have any!)

My daughter will be called Florence after my grandmother.
My son will be called Aeron Leonard.
The spelling of Aeron is deliberate as I want the pronunciation to be Air-Ron not Arr-Ron which it would be if I spelt it Aaron. Leonard was my grandfathers name.

Sissy79 · 02/06/2019 18:27

Oh I love the name Neil. Not even joking Grin

TreesoftheField · 02/06/2019 19:01

Cannot move for Ezras round here! Everyone annoyed that they all chose the same original name.
My daughter's is non existent in this country but top 10 in Israel...

SherlockSays · 02/06/2019 20:16

@Marmite27 I'm in Leeds too! My midwife at LGI said she'd never had a Thea before.

Not come across any myself yet, she goes to a huuuuge nursery and is the only one, long may it continue. Bet it doesn't though.

Marmite27 · 02/06/2019 20:54

@SherlockSays, one was at Waterbabies in Bradford and I was in Jimmie’s with my first (LGI for the second). The other one was at a group in Morley Hmm

Marmite27 · 02/06/2019 20:54

Or Jimmy’s even Blush

SherlockSays · 02/06/2019 21:50

You live so close to me lol.. I'm in birstall, I lived in Morley up until 4 years ago.

Fresta · 02/06/2019 21:52

Ooh, I grew up in Howden Clough! My parents still live there!

Enko · 03/06/2019 10:43

DD2 is now 19 and I have never met another person with her name (Eloisa) I know of the author Eloisa James but that is it.. I just checked the statistics and 30 were named Eloisa in 2017. I think that is the highest I can remember seeing over the years usually it has been in 10's

DS is Conrad and that says 36 were given this name however as it is a more known name people are more accepting of his name as one they know. With Eloisa we are often asked to repeat her name or they think we say Eloise.

DD1 is 21st on the table Sad the year she was named it was not in the top 100. and dd3 is 198th She has met a couple of other girls with her name but never been in school with one. She is currently planning a presentation at school and the subject is " how to pronounce my name" (Aoife) as many struggle Smile

DH and I wanted names that were not in the top 100 but names people would know and feel were classical. Dd1 was a bit of a odd one it became that popular. I have a unisex name it appears not at all on the female list of names and 3 boys were named this in 2017.... I don't like the name much and I have never in my almost 50 years met another with the name.
