Anyone picked a really “original” name...

... only to discover it isn’t at all?

I have a Kit. Thought it was a bit quirky and “different” at the time. Even the stats seemed to suggest so.

He’s 2 and I’m hearing it EVERYWHERE. Yet another celebrity has just had one. I still love it of course but isn’t funny how we think we’re being really cool and “original” and actually we’re anything but!

Anyone else have any tales of baby naming woe? Grin

Errant nope

Isitmybathtimeyet · 29/05/2019 13:20

I knew a Florence who must be mid-20s now whose grandparents referred to her as Flora because they wouldn’t accept she was called Florence!

Christine/Christina, Julie/Julia is a return to the originals. Girls names ended in ‘a’ because that was the feminine ending. The mid 20th century saw those names made more masculine by removing the ‘a’ and now we’re moving back again. I gather there is some debate on whether the ‘a’ was always part of the name or just there in writing to denote a woman. Perhaps the ‘a’ wasn’t pronounced in some cases. I’d love to know the truth of it.

I have one ‘a’ ending and one not for my girls. So have no pro or anti view!

FairfaxAikman it's got to be Dave then? (Can't believe I've not managed to guess, was proud of myself for guessing Noah earlier in the thread Blush)

FairfaxAikman · 29/05/2019 14:10

Errant wrong again

ErrantTesselation · 29/05/2019 14:13

Timothy

ErrantTesselation · 29/05/2019 14:38

FairfaxAikman hang on! It's Andrew isn't it? Because of the Scottish connection (St Andrews). Though, assuming I'm right, I didn't realise it had become so little used, though I can't remember when I last met a baby Andrew!

thetonsillolith · 29/05/2019 14:40

I always think this about all the Arlo's I see around now. It must be more common than Gavin or Graham now.

FangsTasticBeast · 29/05/2019 14:58

My new grandson is called Arlo, haven’t met another yet and I have two children in primary school. Must depend on the area you live

Ds2 has a quite unusual name, the only other one we’ve met is about 8 years younger than him

BelfortGabbz · 29/05/2019 15:19

I remember years ago watching a news interview with a girl of 17/18 called Jade. It was so unusual even the reporter commented on it.

Fast foward a couple of years and I knew 4. Not heard a baby named it for 20 years now....

Fresta · 29/05/2019 15:21

I know a 7 year d Audrey!

NorthernRunner · 29/05/2019 15:24

A old work friend (who I no longer see or hear from) named her son Munro.
I thought that was lovely and very original

Myotherhusbandisgaryoldman · 29/05/2019 15:28

I have a Cleo

goldensugar2 · 29/05/2019 15:35

Is Cleo short for Cleopatra?

BeckyAnnLeeman · 29/05/2019 15:46

I really love the name Cleo but names ending in O are in fashion at the moment, Arlo, Milo, Junoe etc. so I wouldn't say it's original as such. There's probably been a mini Cleo surge in the past five years.

Crushedvelvetcouch · 29/05/2019 16:13

My Goddaughter is Cleo, she's almost four and the only Cleo I know of.

Canone · 29/05/2019 16:23

I love Cleo, but it’s having a big surge in popularity and is in the Top 200 for girls so not unusual. Gorgeous though!

Yup. My DD is almost 8 and called Ivy. At the time it was very rare and I literally didn’t know another one at all. Now they seem to be everywhere or people use it as a middle name as Beyoncé did Sad.

FairfaxAikman · 29/05/2019 17:28

Errant got it on the last one. I know two other - one in his 30s and one in his 50s.

ErrantTesselation · 29/05/2019 17:48

Yay I got there in the end! Grin

bellinisurge · 29/05/2019 17:50

I know a female Kit. Who's middle aged.

carmenbea · 29/05/2019 17:56

Also Juniper/Juno. I'm in South East and this is very popular!

tresbe · 29/05/2019 17:57

Darcy & Sienna seem to be the name every ''mean girl" in my high school has called their daughter Grin soooo many!!

Clubbercised · 29/05/2019 18:10

No way tresby! The only Sienna I know has the loveliest mum! I really don't know her well. Maybe she's secretly a dick, but I would be really shocked if she was.

Darcy... You may have a point* Grin.

*I'm joking really. I'm sure there are lovely people with little Darcys. I just happen to know one solid gold bellend with a little Darcy.

marcus2000 · 29/05/2019 18:18

Still chortling over the name Slithery mooted by a previous OP...

BasiliskStare · 29/05/2019 20:08

Ds has a name I thought was classic but unusual at the time - it is not terribly unusual ( so a few with same names ) Still wish I had called him John - but his name is just his name now. Also have heard someone take the rip out of his name - it's a fine name and a decent nn. But yes Slithery would have been a laugh.
