Anyone picked a really “original” name...

... only to discover it isn’t at all?

I have a Kit. Thought it was a bit quirky and “different” at the time. Even the stats seemed to suggest so.

He’s 2 and I’m hearing it EVERYWHERE. Yet another celebrity has just had one. I still love it of course but isn’t funny how we think we’re being really cool and “original” and actually we’re anything but!

Anyone else have any tales of baby naming woe? Grin

Prosecco

Dear god not Edna 😬

I know a Dorothy who would be late teens/early 20’s now. Her parents were trail blazers!

BasiliskStare · 28/05/2019 14:18

Edna will probably take a while but who knows ? Grin

Alan Clark's brother was Colin.

mimibunz · 28/05/2019 14:18

I wonder when Bertha, Hester and Dorcas will make a comeback?

Proseccofuelled · 28/05/2019 14:21

@semperldem coolio families always seem to be there early
They were probably covering everything in grey & yellow 20 years ago too Grin

Proseccofuelled · 28/05/2019 14:22

@yahbasic there you go you’ll be one of the supportive older family members Grin

Proseccofuelled · 28/05/2019 14:23

Well Bertha is somehow defying the rules - it should be bang on trend right now Grin

I know a baby Hester - lovely name :-)

Janleverton · 28/05/2019 14:25

I very nearly named dc3 kit. That was in 2009. He has a very non-unusual name instead (which I love). I think it’s a name that is genuinely outside of fads or trends. Know of grandfathers, middle aged folk and younger all with the same name, including kids his age. Same with my other dc. Hasn’t really come into or gone out of fashion.

churchthecat · 28/05/2019 14:26

The key is to give your child a really shite name. I hate my name, my parents always thought it was very original, and it is I suppose, I have only twice in my life met others. It's unpopular because it's horrible.

IggyAce · 28/05/2019 14:26

My dd her name wasn’t even in the top 50 when we named her, however it seems to have had a regional rise in popularity as there were 2 others in her year and at least 1 in every school year after for about 5 years.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 28/05/2019 14:34

Hester is becoming popular now.

DS has a very traditional name that is perfectly well known and timeless but also not widely used at the moment (bottom half of top 100). We weren’t hugely bothered by popularity stuff but didn’t expect to meet many others. When he was a few days old he had to go to A&E and was in a row of three cubicles and all three babies had the same name!

My girls, I have just found out, are next to each other near the bottom of the top 100. They both have names we love without thinking about how unusual they are but neither have so far met a peer with the same name, and I’m actually quite surprised!

bananasandwicheseveryday · 28/05/2019 14:34

So much depends on where you are and who you know. My DCs name has been mentioned on this thread as one which was chosen for it's uniqueness a few years ago. Except that my DC is around ten years older than the one mentioned on here! I think the best you can hope for is 'uncommon ' rather than unique.
I must admit, when choosing names for our dcs, we did try to avoid the names that were very popular at that time and generally, thoughi do hear both names occasionally, they are still not top ten.

ErrantTesselation · 28/05/2019 14:36

JaffaCakesAreAMealInABite is it Elijah?

ErrantTesselation · 28/05/2019 14:36

Or Noah?

ErrantTesselation · 28/05/2019 14:38

I can imagine a trendy couple calling their daughter Bertha! Though to me it's the machine from the 80s cartoon Grin

BitOfFun · 28/05/2019 14:42

It's the Madwoman In The Attic for me Grin.

It's funny to see Dorothy and Audrey mentioned: I was only daydreaming about them the other day as baby names. Daydreaming it will remain though- or I'll save them for dogs Grin

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 28/05/2019 14:44

Adam and Eve must be the most original ( think about it !)

BadTigerKitty · 28/05/2019 14:47

After naming our first two with fairly standard, but not very common Irish names we discovered that another family in the small village has the same sibling pairing, but with each sibling a year ahead of us. Still don't know whether to be embarrassed or whether we should bond over our amazing taste!

CloudPop · 28/05/2019 14:51

I know 7 Ethans, all aged 12. Never come across another one before or since.

Proseccofuelled · 28/05/2019 14:59

@churchthecat laughed out loud at your comment

JaffaCakesAreAMealInABite · 28/05/2019 15:03

You got it with your second guess Errant! We even had someone really quite upset after we had named him because she had always wanted to use it for a future son and thought that as it was so unique, everyone would just think she was copying us! 15 years on and I really don’t think it would be a problem now!

JaffaCakesAreAMealInABite · 28/05/2019 15:05

One of our DDs does genuinely have a very unusual name (she was the only one born in Scotland in her birth year) and there have been less than 3 each year since then. I have only ever checked the English/Welsh lists a few times and it’s never shown up on them at all. I keep waiting for people to pick up on it and for it to suddenly become popular.

Masharla · 28/05/2019 15:07

I think we are still safe with Ilithyia :)

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 28/05/2019 15:15

Gary and Tracey?

Stravapalava · 28/05/2019 15:22

My parents thought they were choosing really original but classic names for DBro and I.

Fast forward 3 years and my name is number one for girls and DBro's name is number one for boys!!
