DP and I are compiling our list and both have Naomi but pronounce differently.

Is it 'Nigh-oh-mi' or 'neigh-oh-mi'?

Or are we both wrong Grin

NorthernKnickers · 26/05/2019 05:42

I've heard it pronounced both ways soo neither is wrong I guess 🤷‍♀️

Pinkvoid · 26/05/2019 05:42

Neigh not nigh. Nigh pronunciation is spelt Naiomi and is a different name. SIL is Naomi and she hates people pronouncing it nigh-omi.

StephenQueenBooks · 26/05/2019 05:45

Nigh oh mi. North West.

Littlefattykittycatty · 26/05/2019 05:46

I would pronounce it nigh omi

WildFlower2019 · 26/05/2019 05:59

SundayMorningSun · 26/05/2019 06:46

I'd usually say Nay-OH-mi, but I think I vary between the two.

Both are right, just a matter of preference.

daisypond · 26/05/2019 07:27

Nay-oh-mi

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/05/2019 07:29

My friend pronounces it ‘Nair-me’ 😱 (not her name, but her friend’s name)

I personally say nay-OH-mi.

Esspee · 26/05/2019 07:35

Pearlfish · 26/05/2019 07:37

My automatic pronunciation would be Nigh-OH-me (I’m from NI)

But - having lived in Scotland for most of my adult life, I would know that for most people here it would be Nay-OH-me.

I also know some accents in NI which would make it sound more like Nee-oh-me (with the first 2 syllables said very quickly rather than the first syllable being slightly elongated as with the first two examples above.)

I would be totally comfortable with any of the above pronunciations. The only one I have ever been thrown by was a friend I had when I was younger who pronounced it NAY-o-me. I had to make a conscious effort every time to say it right - it just didn’t stick in my head.

99bb · 26/05/2019 08:08

Nay

desperatelyseekingcaffeine · 26/05/2019 08:09

Neigh-oh-me, but be prepared for many people pronouncing nye-oh-me. I hadn't realised before having my daughter that there was another common (mis)pronunciation!

MadisonAvenue · 26/05/2019 08:52

Nay-owe-me
