DP and I are compiling our list and both have Naomi but pronounce differently.

Is it 'Nigh-oh-mi' or 'neigh-oh-mi'?

Or are we both wrong Grin

It's actually a totally phonetical name so I can’t see how some people pronounce it nigh?

I'd have thought that phonetically it would be Na-o-mi with an a like apple, an o like orange and and i like igloo. Lots of names aren't phonetically regular.

ThanksItHasPockets · 26/05/2019 09:26

Nay-oh-mee, but I sort of smooth the first two syllables together so it’s closer to nair-mee (and don’t shout at me for including an ‘r’ - I have a non-rhotic RP accent and don’t pronounce the ‘r’ in ‘air’ or ‘hair’).

Purplelavenders · 26/05/2019 09:27

Naomi is pronounced Nye-oh-mee

Nayomi would be pronounced Nay oh mee

LuckyAtCards · 26/05/2019 09:29

Nay-uh-me is my preference.

Though (trust me on this) the vast majority of folk will call her Nay-OH-me, whatever pronunciation you plump for.

Fernie6491 · 26/05/2019 09:30

The Naomi in our family is pronounced NAY-oh-mi, with emphasis on the first syllable. When people emphasise the middle syllable it always sounds awkward to my ears

LordPickle · 26/05/2019 09:35

I haven't RTFT but every time I hear this name I think about Van Wilder saying it's "I moan" spelled backwards. Confused

ArgyMargy · 26/05/2019 09:38

NAY oh me. But if they introduce themselves as Nay OH me or Nye OH me or NYE oh me, that's what I'll call them.

concernedforthefuture · 26/05/2019 10:40

I've heard it as:

neigh-oh-me
neigh-a-me
neigh-me

ThedementedPenguin · 26/05/2019 10:40

RaffertyFair

Oh course I know how to say my daughters name.

The more I thought about it though, the more I confused myself.

I’ve had a shit week with very little sleep so am very easily confused this morning.

Frazzled2207 · 26/05/2019 10:49

@ReganSomerset is correct

Quite a popular name in Japan where always pronounced na (a for apple) -oh-mi.

I also know at least one Brit that says it that way, nicer than both options you mentioned IMO.

maloofhoof · 26/05/2019 11:06

I know two Naomi's. One pronounces it Nay the other Nye.

kaytee87 · 26/05/2019 17:27

Ni oh me

I'm Scottish.

flowery · 26/05/2019 17:33

”Naomi is pronounced Nye-oh-mee”

What you mean is “I pronounce it Nye-oh-mee”

This thread shows very clearly there are several perfectly valid ways of pronouncing the name, therefore you can’t just announce that it “is” pronounced the way you happen to pronounce it.

Pinnacular · 26/05/2019 17:36

Nay-oh-mi (Midlands) but my mil says nay-yummy (Irish).

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 18:06

NAY-um-y
not Nigh-OH-me

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 26/05/2019 18:13

Fulltimemummy85 · 26/05/2019 18:40

Stravapalava · 26/05/2019 18:44

ProudmummytoMA · 26/05/2019 19:04

Chachaslider · 26/05/2019 19:08

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/05/2019 19:11

Agh I don't know. I have read the some of the thread and can't remember how I say it!!

strawberrypenguin · 26/05/2019 19:16

Neigh not nigh for me im inSE England.

Nomes29 · 02/06/2019 00:54

It's Nay-O-Mi

Not Nye...
If it was spelt 'Nyomi or Niomi then it would be Nye.

A word of warning... after 30 years... it's still annoying when people get it wrong... and I've been called Natalie a few times too 😂😂
I always have to say "like Campbell..." 😂😂😂

Lozz22 · 02/06/2019 13:06

Nay-o-mee

Conks · 02/06/2019 13:15

Nigh. Scottish
