DP and I are compiling our list and both have Naomi but pronounce differently.

Is it 'Nigh-oh-mi' or 'neigh-oh-mi'?

Or are we both wrong Grin

Nigh-oh-mi

Fedoratheexploreer · 02/06/2019 13:48

Neigh-oh-me

Fedoratheexploreer · 02/06/2019 13:48

Although I have a cousin called Naomi, and because we couldn’t pronounce her name when we were little she’s now called Nomi.

Chwaraeteg · 02/06/2019 13:51

Nye-oh-mi. I had a friend at school with this name and she always pronounced it this way.

DuchessOfBallybrack · 02/06/2019 13:53

Nay-Ome-ee (dublin)

JaneGlorianaVillanueva · 02/06/2019 14:05

I'd pronounce it nay - oh - mee

I'm from the NW

AmyMaria2 · 02/06/2019 18:27

Nay o me

South east

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 02/06/2019 18:32

I've heard both but think the Nay-oh-me pronunciation is nicer

I was at school with a Naomi in the 80s and we all called her Nye-oh-me so I always assumed that was the normal pronunciation but as an adult I've realised that isn't the case (I've no idea what her parents called her so it's possible that her name was unintentionally butchered by all the teachers/kids as none of us had come across the name before!)

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 02/06/2019 18:37

Nay-oh-me

tiramisu1 · 02/06/2019 18:40

Where do people get the y sound from? It's not Nayomi?!

Naomi is Na oh mi imo.

TheJoxter · 02/06/2019 20:07

tiramisu1
Would you pronounce potato pot-at-o or pot-ay-to?
Na-o-mi doesn’t sound right at all!

tiramisu1 · 02/06/2019 22:42

True, potato is pronounced po tay to but tomato is to ma to Grin

Is Naomi never pronounced Na oh mi?

ReganSomerset · 02/06/2019 22:53

I'd say to-mar-toe rather than to-ma-to with a short a.

AngeloMysterioso · 02/06/2019 23:43

Neigh-oh-me. I can't f**king stand it when someone pronounces it nigh-oh-me. Where are they even getting the i sound from? It's literally the letter a! It's right there! Are they pronouncing Zoe zu-e as well? God if my name was actually Naomi I'd just be in a constant state of rage.

FWIW I don't know anyone actually called Naomi who pronounces it with the i sound instead of the a sound.

MonsterRehab23 · 02/06/2019 23:53

Nay-oh-mi. In Scotland There’s not ‘I’ so it’s not Nigh-oh mi.

Most people call me Ni-omi though, I can’t be bothered to correct everybody so as long as u don’t call me something stupid like Nay-mi it’s fine.

RaffertyFair · 03/06/2019 07:20

tiramisu1 gaol is the english spelling of jail. The 'ay' sound is used in that word just as people use it in pronouncing Naomi

JC4PMPLZ · 03/06/2019 07:23

I say, taking lead from name owner, eother
Neyo me
Or
Nay Omi

Verily1 · 03/06/2019 07:41

Ny oh me

EmmaJR1 · 03/06/2019 07:41

Gahhhh I have a Naomi and it's definitely NAY OH MI

NOT Nigh oh mi

Gets on my last nerve!
