Nina - negative reaction

ManeChanged · 10/05/2019 13:42

We called our daughter Nina. Most people reacted very positively. However my brother sent a text saying “the other kids have lovely, classic names. Why name this one after an emergency service siren?”

He has shaken our love for the name.

What do others think of Nina?

Nina Simone! Great connotations if you ask me.

AutumnNymph · 10/05/2019 18:59
  1. it’s a lovely name - go for it
  2. as PPs said your brother is being a typical brother and messing with your head
  3. I would do the exact same and mess with my siblings head regardless of which name they picked - that’s what keeps life interesting 😂
AhhhHereItGoes · 10/05/2019 19:00

My aunts name.
I find it both classy and beautiful without being in the top 100 list.

Socksontheradiator · 10/05/2019 19:00

I love the name Nina! It's a timeless classic.

villainousbroodmare · 10/05/2019 19:01

Love it.

borntobequiet · 10/05/2019 19:02

Your brother is an immature idiot.

User11011 · 10/05/2019 19:04

Very pretty.
There isn't a name that exists that everyone agrees on. All that matters is your opinion.

zippyswife · 10/05/2019 19:04

Love it. It was on my list too.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 10/05/2019 19:05

It’s such a pretty name! If I had to change my own name, Nina is definitely on my list.

ShirleyAvenue · 10/05/2019 19:06

Your brother is just making a childish and mildly amusing joke.
Nina is a great name. I really love it.

MouseBatMummy · 10/05/2019 19:49

I think it's a lovely name. But I also would have laughed at that message. You know him - was he just joking?

ThanksItHasPockets · 10/05/2019 19:54

LOVE Nina.

MuckUp · 10/05/2019 19:55

I wouldn’t choose it personally but your brother was completely out of order. Unless meant as a joke. Which case, still out of order...

PlatypusLeague · 10/05/2019 20:37

Nina is a lovely name.

I don't think of emergency vehicles because Nina has a short a sound and isn't pronounced Nee-Naaah.

Bumblebeesmum · 10/05/2019 21:35

Your brother is just misjudging / overstepping the sibling banter line - has he got kids?

TatianaLarina · 10/05/2019 21:38

I agree with him. With a London accent it comes out Neenarr

ManeChanged · 10/05/2019 21:59

I know he meant it as a joke but when your hormones are going crazy it’s sometimes hard to find humour in a joke at the expense of the first decision you make that will help shape and define your new human!

I will try and lighten up :-)

He’s rude. Nina is a lovely name. I had a friend called this growing up and none of us thought it was unusual or out there at all 🤷‍♀️ I think of it as less common but beautiful, which is a good thing!

GreyBirds · 11/05/2019 00:10

I didn’t even make the connection to a siren until I read the posts above me! I thought you’d made a typo for emergency c section Blush

Pegaroo · 11/05/2019 18:44

I think you brother just wanted to get his play on words out there. Nina is lovely.

elephantmarch · 13/05/2019 21:02

Change your brother, keep the name Wink it’s beautiful.

Nicecupofcoco · 13/05/2019 21:07

Love it op!

MooBaaLaLaLa · 13/05/2019 21:19

I only think of ambulances in connection with Nina when I hear the newsreader Nina Nannar's name. I will admit I think it every time though.

It also reminds me of the start of Wigfield's Saturday Night song Blush

Hopes Nina Nannar isn't a mumsnetter. If so, sorry!

MooBaaLaLaLa · 13/05/2019 21:20

Lovely name though OP, congratulations!

Goosethemoose · 13/05/2019 21:26

Funnily enough Nina was my top choice for a DD until my MOTHER made the same "joke", OP! Still trying to claw back my love for it now... it really can get to you. We must ignore the haters! It's a fantastic name.
