Nina - negative reaction

ManeChanged · 10/05/2019 13:42

We called our daughter Nina. Most people reacted very positively. However my brother sent a text saying “the other kids have lovely, classic names. Why name this one after an emergency service siren?”

He has shaken our love for the name.

What do others think of Nina?

Text back:
“The others have lovely, classic brothers. Why have I got this bellend? 😂”

ManeChanged · 10/05/2019 15:46

@LightDrizzle that’s brilliant! I’m actually tempted.

@ManeChanged
Interesting that your brother is 41 - I'm 41 too and I immediately think of the emergency services thing because of the person at my school - I wonder if there is any connection?!
But seriously - it is a lovely name. You should without a doubt use it if you love it.

oohbubbles1 · 10/05/2019 17:13

don't listen to what your brother says OP, what matters is that YOU love it and its a perfectly lovely name anyway x

Ohgodwhyme · 10/05/2019 17:14

I agree about the siren

LightDrizzle · 10/05/2019 17:36

I really like Nina. It’s classic, but quietly sexy I think. It’s easy to spell, easy to say, and works in lots of languages.

AlyssasBackRolls · 10/05/2019 17:37

Ambulances don't even make that noise any more! It's a lovely name, ignore him.

MrsBertBibby · 10/05/2019 17:49

Gorgeous. Never had a girl so couldn't use it.

MustardYellowJumper · 10/05/2019 18:08

Emergency sirens haven't made the two-tone sound since the 1980s I think? So modern day kids (and, indeed, me aged 31) don't make this association at all.

You can hear all the different ones on this clip:

staplerfan · 10/05/2019 18:10

My brother is a similar age and that is the sort of comment he would make too. Just ignore him and laugh it off. It seems like a typical brother thing to me.

MustardYellowJumper · 10/05/2019 18:10

Also, it's a nice name! Good choice, OP.

AudacityOfHope · 10/05/2019 18:12

I love it! I'd have chosen it but it sounds awful with our surname.

Lucked · 10/05/2019 18:13

I absolutely love the name Nina and it was on my list, I am not just saying that to make you feel better I think it is a great name that suits girls and women of all ages.

PinaColadaPlease · 10/05/2019 18:14

My brother would do the same!

LynetteScavo · 10/05/2019 18:25

I love it - It's under used atm, but I suspect it is about to get a lot more popular. Smile

Whoops75 · 10/05/2019 18:26

I love the name too

hewontstopshitting · 10/05/2019 18:27

It’s a lovely name!. One of my favours girls names. My FIL refused to call my sons by their names because he disliked them so much.

Yogagirl123 · 10/05/2019 18:29

I love it too, great choice, many congrats on your daughter.

I'm an eighties kid and immediately thought of a siren, but it's still a nice name.

queenb83 · 10/05/2019 18:33

Ooh what a lovely name !! , it's going on my list xxx

showmethegin · 10/05/2019 18:35

It's on our list! Beautiful name and you never hear it

EvilDog · 10/05/2019 18:39

Our sister changed her 3 week old baby’s name from Isabel to annabel after our brother kept calling her ‘Isabel - end’
He’s 41 as well.
Brothers are dickheads.

ReganSomerset · 10/05/2019 18:45

Not a fan personally but its OK

Throughabushbackwards · 10/05/2019 18:51

Nina is a great name. Makes me think of lovely Nina Conti.
