Nina - negative reaction

ManeChanged · 10/05/2019 13:42

We called our daughter Nina. Most people reacted very positively. However my brother sent a text saying “the other kids have lovely, classic names. Why name this one after an emergency service siren?”

He has shaken our love for the name.

What do others think of Nina?

My son and his wife have chosen Nina if they have a little girl and they're very fussy!

CrinolineQueen · 13/05/2019 23:01

I have four brothers. This is the kind of nonsense I expect from them and then dismiss Grin

Nina is a lovely name.

CrinolineQueen · 13/05/2019 23:03

MooBaaLaLaLa, Nina Nannar's name always reminds me of the intro to Saturday Night too! Grin

Bobcut · 13/05/2019 23:09

I reckon he’s just wasn’t familiar with it previously

rosyedith · 14/05/2019 08:36

What an arsehole! It's a lovely name x

Chopinaround · 14/05/2019 18:33

It’s really lovely. Your DBs comment needs to be ingnored.

theconstantinoplegardener · 14/05/2019 18:38

I know two Ninas and I've never ever thought of emergency sirens in connection with them! It's a lovely name. Ignore your brother.

Soosiesoo · 14/05/2019 18:39

Beautiful name!

pineapplepatty · 14/05/2019 19:04

I think of a lovely book called Nina the gobblede goat.

Ignore him

Thank you so much for all the many positive comments on this thread. It has really helped change our mindsets back to loving the name Nina again.

I have an adult Dd Nina. Not once did anyone bully her for her name at school and goodness knows the year group she was in were often not the kindest, but they never latched on to that.

It’s always been commented on very positively with some saying they wish they’d thought of it. She is pretty cool and original too, so it suits her. There was never another one at school with her either.

ubiquitousness · 15/05/2019 08:23

I did think of the ambulance thing when I heard it but quite a few names have jokes in them.

If you love it, keep it

GrumbleBumble · 15/05/2019 09:10

Some years ago my uncle Tom and Aunt Sue told the family that their unborn baby was going to be a boy and they were going to call him Nicholas. My other uncle, Tom went on and on about the name. Did they mean Nappyless? Nicky no pants. Did they know how much he would be bullied at school? Etc etc. So Tom and Sue called my cousin was called James instead. Fast forward 18 months Tom and his wife Sara have a baby boy and guess what they called him? Yep Nicholas. Obliviously these aren't the actual names.

MooBaaLaLaLa · 15/05/2019 21:20

@CrinolineQueen, so glad it's not just me, I thought I was super-weird!! Grin

Moominfan · 15/05/2019 21:23

Lovely name, your brothers rude

BettyCrockaShit · 16/05/2019 16:31

Going to be biased as it's my name (I'm a Georgina in full), but I think it's great. Suits all ages and personalities, I think. Good choice Smile

TurquoiseDress · 16/05/2019 17:41

I think Nina is a lovely name!

I've never thought of it as an "emergency service siren"- surely that's wrong, isn't it nee-naw or something like that?

In any case your brother your brother sounds not particularly bright

CornforthWhite · 16/05/2019 19:19

I really like it! Don't change it!

Happyandglorious · 16/05/2019 19:29

When Nina starts learning to talk you can teach her to call him Uncle Turd (- or your own choice nick name)

CupOhTea · 16/05/2019 19:33

There's nothing wrong with Nina at all. It's a perfectly normal name.

Your brother was extremely rude. Or, does he have a 'quirky' sense of humour and was this his idea of a joke?

Pebbles16 · 16/05/2019 20:07

Late to post I know.
Nina is not nee naw. It's a beautiful name.
I cannot believe are so silly about a perfectly lovely name

Megan2018 · 17/05/2019 12:38

@Pebbles16
No it isn't - but it doesn't stop 7 year olds! We thought it was hilarious at the time. I would still use the name now, but kids will always find something.

Bigfanofcheese · 18/05/2019 10:39

Ignore him! One of the nicest women I know is called Nina and it's a great name (short for Anita in her case).

In terms of 'nee naw'-ing in the playground, Kids will take the mick out of even the most innocuous names. Mine is a very old, well known 'classic' and I still get teased with certain song lyrics which were regularly bellowed in my direction all through school. I can honestly say it has done me no harm.

Susiedog · 18/05/2019 14:50

It's a lovely name.
I think sirens lost that sound years ago.

notrightnowthankyou · 21/05/2019 10:12

Your brother is a dick, obviously.

I have a DD Nina. I have gotten only positive reactions (well I suppose no one would have told me to my face if they didn't like it.) I've had several people tell me that they wished they'd called their daughter that.

A couple more points if you're still worried:

  1. The Baby Name Wizard named her daughter Nina. I mean, that's good evidence.
  2. It was one of the most popular baby names announced last year in the Telegraph. Not that that means anything, but it shows it's not weird, unusual, or newfangled.
  3. It is one of the steadiest names out there. It's never that popular, never that unpopular. That is the very definition of classic.
  4. The siren thing is asinine. Also kids names are so much more unusual these days. I think teasing about names is very much our mean generation, not these kids'. If you're really worried, just give her a longer name on the b.c. -- Georgina and Valentina are nice, though I still just prefer Nina.
  5. All the Ninas I know are legends. I know a Nina who is in her fifties. I think some names really age people -- but Nina makes her seem youthful while still being a Serious Person.
  6. Did I mention your brother is a dick?

Sorry for the length, just wanted to reassure you!
