Naughty boys names?

Firstly I have got to stop discussing baby names with both sets of grandparents - I know I take their opinions way too seriously.
Dp's Father is a headteacher, we were discussing names on the weekend for our imminent arrival, and Dp mentioned he liked Harrison.
His Dad said we can't use it as it's a naughty boys name.
Our other names on the shortlist are Lucas, Leo and Owen.

What are others opinions on these? I know these names are fairly popular which doesn't worry me too much, I don't actually know any other children with these names ... yet!

Harrison is a lovely name and I don't know any naughty boys called that.

Steer clear of Kaiden and Jayden though!

Justgivemesomepeace · 19/11/2018 10:52

I have a Lucas and he's a lovely bright good boy. Go for that! Oliver seems to be the naughty name in his school!

ChampooPapi · 19/11/2018 10:52

Not another Harrison! it's so popular!

Justwaitingforaline · 19/11/2018 10:53

Lucas is a naughty boys name, IMO, but that’s down to knowing one who’s naughty!

DRE56322 · 19/11/2018 10:55

I will say that I hear a lot of Harry stop/no/behave being shouted at misbehaving children in public.... (obviously, the quiet and well-behaved Harrys aren't being shouted at/after, though, so this means nothing!)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/11/2018 10:55

I do get where your FIL is coming from. People criticsize the likes of Katie Hopkins but we people do make assumptions based on a name whether we like it or not.

My perception of naughy names.
Callum. Every Callum I've ever known has been a little thing (Aside from one who is lovely).
Mason.
Jayden
Lewis (Although for some reason Louis are okay)
Zak
Jenson
Jacob
Sean

Not so much naughty more impish and mischievous.
Harry.
Alfie
Charlie
Ethan
Jake
Thomas
George.

Good boy names
Elliot
Tom
Ben
Simon
Gabriel
Joseph
Alexander
Leo
Jude

shirleyschmidt · 19/11/2018 11:00

The two that immediately sprang to mind were Alfie and Archie.

When I was teaching there really was a consensus among teachers about names that meant trouble, names that were always delightful kids etc - so you're right stereotypes exist. I can't help much with exactly which names as the youngest kids I taught (secondary) in my last year of teaching must be early 20s by now Shock Back then Tom's were definitely always good boys - range of ability but always delightful. Jakes and Olis were cheeky mischief makers who'd chat too much and push the boundaries a bit but not bad kids, Dean and Max and Ryan had a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy of becoming naughty, difficult kids - but Dean and Ryan are probably already dated and out of favour anyway. The only Max I know now is lovely...

blueskiesandforests · 19/11/2018 11:08

Where we live Lucas/ Luca means 8- 12 year old boy Grin it seems as though every other boy in that age range is a form of Lucas.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 19/11/2018 11:30

Naughty boy:

Tyler
Brad/ Bradley
Danny
Cian
Alfie

Good names:

William
James
Thomas
George
Louis

Not great nanes:

Mason
Ruben
Callum
Harry

Just my opinion though. If you like a name, then use it.

VenelopeVonSweetz · 19/11/2018 11:33

Sorry but there is no such thing as naughty names, children can be naughty regardless of what their name is.

blueskiesandforests · 19/11/2018 11:37

VenelopeVonSweetz obviously, but the OP is asking about stereotypes in the light of stereotyping based on names by her exheadteacher FIL

Absolutely stupid! Names are names it's the person not the name if you went to a private school you could have a "naughty" Baltazar doesn't mean it's the name it's the person go for what you love and if that's Harrison, Jayden or Jayden or Logan so be it enjoy.

lebkuchenlover · 19/11/2018 14:05

I remember reading an article in the BBC news where names like Callum were described as naughty.

Of course it's not the name that makes someone naughty! There is simply a correlation.

blueskiesandforests · 19/11/2018 14:13

Nobody's saying the name makes the child naughty.

People are just admitting that they are aware of stereotypes and identifying the names they believe are seen stereotypically.

People take all kinds of logical and illogical things into account when naming a child.

Stereotypes teachers and other parents might hold about names are no less logical things to consider than whether a name is too 20, or "sounds like an old man" or various random strangers find it "ugly" even though the parents like it, etc

Shadow1234 · 19/11/2018 14:19

I agree with others that say its ridiculous to stereotype people because of their names. If I loved a name, then I would chose that name. Go with what you like. (this is why I didnt discuss baby names with family members, because they will all give their opinions and its not their child to name).

cheesefield · 19/11/2018 14:21

Bailey

Harrison
Shane
Bradley

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/11/2018 14:22

I’ve always liked Max but DD had one in her class all through Primary who drove her to distraction. I feel a lot of it though was due to parenting or rather lack off.

SoupDragon · 19/11/2018 14:24

There is simply a correlation

There really isn't.

pinkhorse · 19/11/2018 14:33

My first thoughts were Callum, Harrison, Tyler, Max.

lebkuchenlover · 19/11/2018 14:40

Several studies have found a correlation between names and social backgrounds, with the parenting skills of mothers and fathers having a critical impact on future development.

Again, this doesn't suggest causation, simply a correlation.
