Naughty boys names?

Firstly I have got to stop discussing baby names with both sets of grandparents - I know I take their opinions way too seriously.
Dp's Father is a headteacher, we were discussing names on the weekend for our imminent arrival, and Dp mentioned he liked Harrison.
His Dad said we can't use it as it's a naughty boys name.
Our other names on the shortlist are Lucas, Leo and Owen.

What are others opinions on these? I know these names are fairly popular which doesn't worry me too much, I don't actually know any other children with these names ... yet!

OP posts:

Umbongo has proved my point

Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2018 15:47

I've come across a Rogue, Vandal and Kray. All names to be avoided!

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 15:48

The only Jayden I know is a lovely little chap. Quite solemn and dinosaur obsessed.

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 15:50

Imagine calling your kid Vandal! Grin

If you're going for a crime name at least go for Heist. Vandal just seems so small fry.

This sounds like, what are the most frequently used boys names in lower socio economic groups. OP I would put Harrison into that group.
The UK is very class segregated society and different groups use different names. These dc often come from the least educated and lowest income groups in society so it wouldn't be surprising if they struggled at school sometimes.
A more honest question might be I am looking for middle class names, what are my options? I suspect lots of people rule out names because they don't fit into their socio economic group either up or down.

Agree.

lady
I missed your earlier post 😀

userabcname · 20/11/2018 16:23

Leo is definitely the best name on your list. Not a fan of Harrison or Owen. Lucas is OK.

KittensAndCake · 20/11/2018 16:25

How ever if I hear a let's say Elliot I think oh he's well brought with disciplined parent/parents.
I know that's unfair and I'm likely to be wrong.

Why do it then? 🤔

lebkuchenlover · 20/11/2018 16:30

Exactly. It's not the child's name but the child's environment and parenting that determines its behaviour. Certain names seem to be more popular amongst these socio economic groups.

I think most people here are subconsciously (or not!) associating what MN would generalise at ‘common’ or ‘chavvy’ names being given to people pre-disposed to be badly behaved. You’re poor and your name’s Jayden so you must be naughty.

I know several middle class, middle-school aged kids with totally ‘acceptable’ names, who are rude, spoiled and entitled.

Marcipex · 20/11/2018 16:32

Charlie
Jay (The only Jayden I know is angelic)
Kayden Kaiden
Ben
Alex
Louis ( worst of the worst, collected his own poo and rubbed it into a smaller boys face )

Theresa and Arlene would definitely make the list for girls then!

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 16:50

For sure!

Nadine would make that list too as well as the Unutterably Stupid list too. Such a versatile name Nadine

The naughtiest boys I've personally known were several Ryans, a Nicholas and a Stephen (Stephen was pure evil, but I still kinda like the name).

Ladymargarethall · 20/11/2018 17:28

The only Jayden I know is a lovely teenage girl.

AlliKaneErikson · 21/11/2018 04:43

For the record, my Harrison is a bit of a ‘goody goody’ rather than a naughty boy (well, I think that’s how his class would describe him, although he does have his moments at home!).

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 21/11/2018 05:39

Donthugmeimscared · 21/11/2018 06:09

My Harrison is pretty quiet and worries if his teacher gets angry at the class let alone him. He also hates his name being shortened.

I do think it's sad that people pre judge children because of their name as for one they can't help what they are called and secondly surely if someone is viewed as being naughty they can end up acting up to that view.

May I also add Jeremy
And John

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/11/2018 07:25

It's human nature, Kittens. People do make assumptions. Like I've alluded to though. That's not to say those assumptions are always correct

MaisyPops · 21/11/2018 07:37

Harrison is a lovely name. I've only ever taught lovely Harrisons.

People who are getting pearly clutchy seem to be missing the point. Nobody is saying that everyone with a certain name is naughty, nor are they saying that nobody with a naice name is perfectly behaved.

I don't write students off, and if i suddenly decided to take a new approach then i certainly wouldn't write them off for their name. However, experience in education does seem to show that some names come up more frequently for negative issues and poor behaviour.
Equally, if I compared 2 schools I've worked in one was a largely middle class area and the other was in a high area of deprivation. The name trends differed between the schools.

Like it or not names do have associations. I don't see why anyone would pretend otherwise.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 21/11/2018 07:47

I know a Lucas, a Callum and a Danny and they are all fab. Lucas and Danny are really bright kids and doing exceptionally well at school.
