Naughty boys names?

Firstly I have got to stop discussing baby names with both sets of grandparents - I know I take their opinions way too seriously.
Dp's Father is a headteacher, we were discussing names on the weekend for our imminent arrival, and Dp mentioned he liked Harrison.
His Dad said we can't use it as it's a naughty boys name.
Our other names on the shortlist are Lucas, Leo and Owen.

What are others opinions on these? I know these names are fairly popular which doesn't worry me too much, I don't actually know any other children with these names ... yet!

However, experience in education does seem to show that some names come up more frequently for negative issues and poor behaviour.

This.

Think it depends on when and where you were born/ grew up. A lot of the names on peoples good lists i've known to be naughty. i remember my sister always telling me to never name my child Aiden because shes never known a well behaved Aiden. I know three very delightful Aidens. Travis on the other hand i have yet to meet one that has been pleasant, but then again a good friend named her son Travis two weeks ago and already a new association to the name has developed in a short period of time and i'm already forgetting the bad associations i had as the new one is of the beautiful little boy.

I tend not to discuss names with any family members, they've either blabbered the names off to others or just said nasty things which have then ruined the name for me somehow. I'd say keep your names close to your chest. I bet when your child is born and you name it, they will love it and not say anything. Its just what people are associated with, and they'll forget the second they set eyes on him.

Christ, this again. Thinly-disguised class prejudice, with a side order of anti-Irishness, disguised as faux-concern for someone naming a baby.

I must admit it interests me that there is never a discussion of 'naughty girl names', jjust as Irish girls names seem to be regarded as a lot less 'problematic' on here than Irish boys' names.

As a teacher it depends on the school and catchment.

Conner
Kyle
Brandon
Jayden
We’re in a school on a council estate.

Harvey
Freddie
Jonty
Max
Jayden
Ernest

In a very nice C of E school.

You get naughty in all walks of life. I’d rather teach the council estate naughty than the entitled c of e school kids.

Sessy19 · 21/11/2018 12:04

Hilarious bigotry!!

@mrsmrsmrsmrs, are CofE schools exclusive from Council Estates?! Check yourself!

I’m pretty drawn to some of the ‘naughty names’, which makes sense, knowing what I do about my future child’s parents 😉

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 21/11/2018 12:10

Sorry but just being honest?!
Two schools I’ve most recently taught in. Naughty boys names varied between the two.
Yes some CE kids are in the c of e school. Not many from the leafy suburb that the c of e school is in choose to go to the school on the council estate.

The schools are in overlapping catchment area.

All the Callums I know are very cheeky. Some in a fun way, but most in a draining way. Grin

Petitprince · 21/11/2018 12:17

Harrison gets a 'naughty boy' label because it's non-traditional. Also Mason, Jayden, Grayson, Mitchell, Tyler or any that sound like medieval occupations. They're often given by younger working class parents, so some teachers label them as naughty boy names. It's similar for girls with American sounding names (Daisy Mae, Ava Rae etc)

Similarly the more traditional or royal names (Arthur, Constance etc) are often used by older or more middle class parents.

It's not right that we label by class, but it does happen.

headinhands · 21/11/2018 12:18

Was a TA. Could never name a boy Tyler
Kayden
Harvey

StopTheSundayBlues · 21/11/2018 12:21

Falling off my seat about nobody mentioning the name Jack yet!

liquidrevolution · 21/11/2018 12:24

Ben Elliott and Lincoln are the 'bad boys' in DDs reception class. (Her words not mine).

C of e school with mix of pupils.

LadyPamplemousse · 21/11/2018 12:25

Harrison Ford can be a naughty boy with me any time he likes. (Ideally it would be Harrison Ford circa Witness, but I’d certainly still give 2018 Harrison a whirl)

greendale17 · 21/11/2018 12:27

Tommy

DH is a teacher, and he says William is the top naughty boys name.

Ironically the naughtiest boy I know is called Oisin. His parents aren't irish.

MissEliza · 21/11/2018 12:49

Between being a TA and a parent, I have never come across a well behaved Jayden or Kayden. I know one lovely Tyler.** I could go on and on ...

Trampire · 21/11/2018 12:56

I have known a fair few

Jayden's
Brayden
Kayden

Yes, they do come from a lower socioeconomic background. Some naughty, some lovely.

In my dcs Secondary now the naughtiest (but actually extremely well liked and popular boy) is Daley.
He does come from a troubled, chaotic home but he's clever and witty and he does actually want to get on, be educated and get out (so my dd says). The school are helping him manage his anger. I really like him.

Other naughty boys are David and Sam.

I think you can recognise a certain 'class' of family from a name occasionally, however whether or not that means they'll be a 'naughty' child is very random.

I really don't think a name means much.

KittensAndCake · 21/11/2018 12:57

They're often given by younger working class parents, so some teachers label them as naughty boy names.
Similarly the more traditional or royal names (Arthur, Constance etc) are often used by older or more middle class parents.

So not only slagging off the working classes but also younger parents? Nice.

mouthkisses · 21/11/2018 13:15

Any name that's a surname.

HerondaleDucks · 21/11/2018 13:30

Work in youth offending. Classic naughty boy names are:
Tyler
Taylor
Reece/rhys
Cameron
Sean
Jayden
Kieran
Leon!!
Charlie
Samuel
Daniel
George
Blake
James
William

Those were the top ones to mind.
If you like a name though just use it, its up to the child whether they are naughty or not.

MissEliza · 21/11/2018 13:59

I had my heart set on a particular boys name when pregnant with ds1, let's say Kevin. I was working in a secondary school at the time and one of the worst behaved boys was called Kevin. (It was a private school where rich kids could get away with murder.) I was still determined to name ds1 Kevin despite the image of that little shit until I read my leaving card where Kevin no 1 wrote 'Good luck Miss. PS please name the baby Kevin after me.' That completely me off the name! So we had to quickly come up with plan B!
Ps I named ds2 Kevin and he's an angel so there's nothing in a name really!

MarysInTheDyson · 21/11/2018 14:05

At the dcs' comp it seems to be
Josh
Jaydon
Callum
Jake

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 21/11/2018 15:33

Michel I've never met a single English boy called Michel. Maybe you know a lot of French people?

Falling off my seat about nobody mentioning the name Jack yet! I actually did many posts and many hours ago..

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 21/11/2018 16:58

I'm a secondary school TA and I think lots of these names are regional more than socio-economic.

On saying that, I think all school staff could could come up with several examples of names that come up frequently and tend to be used by teenage parents, or those who were troublesome teenagers themselves - the sort of names that come up in popular teen culture rather than literature, academia or the Bible.

OutPinked · 21/11/2018 17:01

Lucas’s are always naughty ime and I see I’m not alone with that.

I’ve never met a ‘good’ Harry either. And of course steer clear of Kaiden/Jayden/Riley.
