As a first name?

Not keen as a first name but maybe use it as a middle name if you really love it?

Yes, my Maclean was shortened to Mac.

I don't think it's one of those surnames that have really crossed over into common forenames like
Fraser, Cameron, Lewis etc. I don't like 'mac' names used as first names though. Mackenzie was really popular for a while.

Would work well as a middle name.

What on Earth has it got to do with MIL?

Also, it kind of reminds me of those dreadful Die Hard films (John McLean often just gets called McLean!)
