I like it. People living outside of Scotland will never get that surname type names are perfectly acceptable up here. In fact Scottish tradition was that a second son would have his mothers maiden name as a first name. First son being named after his father.

I also think Mac as a nickname is great.

CloudPop · 05/10/2018 21:32

Iona

KateTTC123 · 05/10/2018 21:33

@lemonbreeland thanks :) yeah, i don't want to say what my surname is but it goes well with that too. I would never have thought "toothpaste"; think its too common a surname north of the border for that to be folk's first thought! My husband did mention the Die Hard reference though!

What about Mackenzie, and shorten that to Mac ??

KateTTC123 · 05/10/2018 22:34

@shadow1234 nope, unfortunately I've taught some Mackenzies who've put me off the name!

BackforGood · 05/10/2018 22:55

It was my late grandmother's surname

there's the clue.... Surname

Actually, Malcolm is probably an old man enough name to be ready for a new generation. I quite like 'Mal' for short, myself.

Glumglowworm · 05/10/2018 22:57

No!

More acceptable as a middle name, especially in Scotland I think?

LondonLassInTheCountry · 05/10/2018 22:59

Mac is nice how about Macaulay

Bouncingbelle · 05/10/2018 23:00

I've never heard that tradition about the second son. I know it's tradition to give sons their mother's maiden name as a middle name.

Anyhoo... suggestions

@Shadow1234 Mackenzie is a girl's name. The boy's spelling is McKenzie. My daughter is Mackenzie Amelia Grace :)

Powerless · 06/10/2018 00:19

@KateTTC123 What has put you off the name Mackenzie? That's my daughter and she's always unique!! She gets lots of compliments :)

CountFosco · 06/10/2018 00:30

Mackenzie is a girl's name. The boy's spelling is McKenzie

Both of those are Scottish surnames. As a PP said second sons were given their mother's maiden name as a middle name. That then transferred to using those names as first names for boys. Then some people started using some of those surnames/boys names for girls. But the only one of these types of names that I'm aware of that has male and female versions is Leslie/Lesley.

MacKenzie, particulary in the states is a reasonably common girls name however I am working on the understanding that it must originally have been a name meaning son of Kenzie and probably a surname.
I am not sure why some Scottish Islands have ended up being used as girls names and some as boys.
There are those I haven't heard used at all, maybe it is time for an eigg or canna.
I suggested Ninian to my DH, who probably rightly vetoed it right away.

RoseMartha · 06/10/2018 07:21

I would use it as a middle name
