Thoughts on name daffodil

Ever since I was a little girl my favorite flowers were daffodils and I really like creative names so I was thinking the name daffodil for my new daughter. What are your honest thoughts? Is it to “out there”? Because daffie would be a really cute nickname but my sister and dad don’t like it that much. Opinions???

No no

"Considering I've recently heard someone has called their baby girl Chilli..."

Oh, they haven't have they? That is cruel.

I know someone who called her DD Heaven-Leigh .....cringe!

Yika · 14/07/2018 21:53

I know a Narcisa, it's pretty enough.

I think daffodil sounds silly but why not use it as a middle name where you could get away with it.

BigPinkBall · 14/07/2018 21:54

Don’t do it! Change your own name if you like it that much but don’t saddle an innocent child with such a ridiculous moniker!

Somerville · 14/07/2018 21:54

I can't stop laughing.

But if OP is serious, to help her feel better about this pasting, I will confess that I once entertained the idea, for about a minute, when last pregnant, of calling the baby Honeysuckle. Thankfully I came to my senses quickly. (Especially as I had a boy.)

Chasingcars123 · 14/07/2018 21:54

It's probably illegal to call your daughter Daffodil. You know like it's illegal to call your child Hitler.

MorrisIsClose · 14/07/2018 21:55

"The thing is, Morris - at least Narcissus is a real name in Harry Potter"

So, not real then

Elliebobbins · 14/07/2018 21:55

I find it very out there. That being said there are a few names that I once considered out there that I wouldn't now just because I have heard them in use. Narcissa means daffodil but I would probably avoid it as it does make me think narcissistic. Daffodils are lovely though. Could you use another spring themed name to give you the same feeling?

buttercup54321 · 14/07/2018 21:56

How ridiculous.

FuckingHateRain · 14/07/2018 21:56

Even Daisey Duck sounds better than that!

MorrisIsClose · 14/07/2018 21:58

Yes, narcissus is another name for daffodil, which was named after the man who became so obsessed with his own beautiful reflection he couldn't tear himself away and he died staring at himself! Hence where the term narcissism comes from.

You really really don't want to name a child this.

Somerville · 14/07/2018 21:59

buttercup54321 - How ridiculous

Howling at the irony.

Please, please, please tell me you specially namechanged for that comment, buttercup

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/07/2018 22:00

I don't like it. However if you do I'd advise you to definitely go for it.. Yes its crazy and out there but so what. It's not the first crazy name and it certainly will not be the last.
It also cuts the other way. Do you want her to be one of the many Avas and Olivas
My name is Clare. You couldn't come up with anything more dull and boring if you tried. At least Dafodil has some character to it, also. Rose,Daisy,Jasmine, Poppy Violet are all flower nAmes. No one turns their noses up and pulls a face at those names

MorrisIsClose · 14/07/2018 22:01

That made you howl? You're easily pleased.

KaterynParr · 14/07/2018 22:02

How is it any worse than Iris, Rose or Lily ?

Emma198 · 14/07/2018 22:02

I came across a Heaven-Leigh! She's an adult now and goes by Leigh. I knew her through work.

calamariqueen · 14/07/2018 22:02

I suggested this as a joke at the same time as Bacon for a boy when I was pregnant Grin

reallyanotherone · 14/07/2018 22:02

Narcissus is the botanical name, daffodil the common name.

So same thing really. Which is why i wouldn’t use daffodil as a name, i immediately think of narcissus.

Forfolkssake · 14/07/2018 22:03

It's a bit Daffy Duck. However, my youngest daughter has always been adamant that if she has a daughter, she will call her Daffodil! Poppy, Daisy, Tulip, Lily, Hyacinth, Jasmine, Rose, etc.....so why not Daffodil?

NataliaOsipova · 14/07/2018 22:08

Sorry, no. Don't do it. If you fancy a flowery name, then Rose, Lily, Poppy, Daisy, Marguerite, Iris? Or Fleur?

But Daffodil? Please don't.

Pause3FuhFuh · 14/07/2018 22:08

Nooooooooo op

Somerville · 14/07/2018 22:08

That made you howl? You're easily pleased.

It had been coming on ever since Get a puppy / She’ll wander lonely as a cloud / It's your hormones / What: NARCISSUS?!
I properly lost it by the time Buttercup called Daffodil ridiculous. Grin Grin

Bouledeneige · 14/07/2018 22:09

It is bad. No doubt.

She will have to be extremely jolly and have an amazing sense of humour.

I'd say find something easier and less funny.

TheHobbitMum · 14/07/2018 22:09

Dear God don't do it

reallyanotherone · 14/07/2018 22:11

You think? I’d say a daffodil would be cain and self obsessed (as narcissus is the genus for daffodils).

They also poison the water that they stand in when cut. And can be fairly toxic themselves.

So no, not a name i’d choose!
