North?

Ok so we are still coming up with names. We are in our 2nd trimester now so we've still got a while to finalize our choices.

A name we've found that we like too is North. Just to be clear, absolutely no connection to Kim Kardashian whatsoever. Can't personally stand her, but I really like the name and the nn 'Nori'.

Would love to hear your opinions if that's alright :)

Why is it nice? What is nice about a point of the compass that is associated typically in this country with cold and winter? "The frozen north" etc. It's not even attractive from sound point of view and begins with No so if you deconstruct it it becomes quite negative.

And Nori is dried edible seaweed. I didn't know that the Kardashians used Nori as a nickname for North but I can't see how you would have thought of it otherwise because it's not an obvious diminutive. And would it be pronounced 'no-ri' like the seaweer or 'nor-ree' like North? Which then just sounds like gnawing and ignoring.

kaytee87 · 27/06/2018 09:31

It's not a name, it's a direction.

OuchLegoHurts · 27/06/2018 09:32

Let's face it, it's a direction.

Great minds Wink

halcyondays · 27/06/2018 09:37

People will definitely think you're a Kardashian fan.

YoucancallmeVal · 27/06/2018 09:55

It is neither pretty nor classy. It doesn't even sound nice.

FizzyGreenWater · 27/06/2018 12:08

You don't really get the option to say 'nothing to do with the Kardashians' though - they're the only other people that have used North as atotally made up name, of course it is utterly 'to do with them.^

It's not great as a name, use it if you want, everyone will say 'oooh like the Kardashians' for the rest of his life. Up to you!

lifechangesforever · 27/06/2018 12:12

Absolutely everyone will associate it with the Kardashians.. regardless of your reasons for it.

There's no getting away from it.

Norah/Nori are cute - I don't see why that can't be a standalone name.

HappyLollipop · 27/06/2018 12:24

Everyone will think you named your DC after Kim and Kanyes daughter no matter how much you say you didn't! North is such a rubbish name but they use the nn Nori which is lovely and good enough as a stand alone name (god knows why they couldn't just name her that!)

Battleax · 27/06/2018 12:26

Hahaha. No.

Mollie85 · 27/06/2018 12:36

• Same “name” as KK
• Same nickname as KK (Confused) despite KK not being the connection
• It’s not really a name, it’s just a random word. Like chair or gazebo.
• Would you like to be called it? Right now, at this juncture in your life?

By all means name your child this if you think it’s a name that is going to:

• grow with her to adulthood
• not give the bullies any fodder during school years
• allow her to be taken seriously in her professional / adult life

PramCush · 27/06/2018 12:58

I like it a lot

PramCush · 27/06/2018 12:59

Oh, good point about English people saying 'Norf'

FizzyGreenWater · 27/06/2018 13:02

Oh god is it for a girl? I didn't even catch that bit.

Grimmmmm

trueblueari · 27/06/2018 13:09

Eleanor or Eleanora with the nn Nori

MrsFoxPlus4 · 27/06/2018 13:10

I like it isn’t as awful as some Iv seen on here. Would assume you heard it because of the Kardashian’s but I like Nora as a alternative

Topseyt · 27/06/2018 14:15

I know nothing about the Kardashian, as I can't be arsed to pay them any attention.

However, to me North isn't a name at all. It is a direction, a compass point.

Sorry, but I agree that it is ridiculous, and if I heard it I would wonder what the hell the parents could possibly have been thinking.

AmazingPostVoices · 27/06/2018 14:19

No. Definitely not.

PasstheStarmix · 27/06/2018 14:20

Kardashian’s sorry. Maybe subconsciously you’ve liked it when you’ve heard Kim call her daughter North and Northie. Nori makes me think of knorring. I dislike it. It’s just as bad as dream, true etc.

Thundersky · 27/06/2018 14:20

Fine if your surname is Pole

PasstheStarmix · 27/06/2018 14:21

Agree with a pp that Nora is better

Topseyt · 27/06/2018 14:22

North Pole or North Wind were my original thoughts, not the Kardashians, who I couldn't care less about.

PasstheStarmix · 27/06/2018 14:22

But not keen on that either to be honest

TatianaLarina · 27/06/2018 14:56

I’m sure you happened to come up with North Pole with Nori as a nn with no reference to KK.

North Pole and Wind are dreadful names anyway.

If you dislike the Kardashians you’d stay away from so distinctive a name to avoid association.
