North?

Ok so we are still coming up with names. We are in our 2nd trimester now so we've still got a while to finalize our choices.

A name we've found that we like too is North. Just to be clear, absolutely no connection to Kim Kardashian whatsoever. Can't personally stand her, but I really like the name and the nn 'Nori'.

Would love to hear your opinions if that's alright :)

I know a 24 year old man called North so I don’t necessarily associate it to the Kardashian’s, however he does and hates it.

I actually really like the nn Nori though

Glumglowworm · 27/06/2018 21:30

Everyone will assume it’s after the kardashians no matter how many times you insist it isn’t because there’s no way you’d be suggesting it without North West

It’s a terrible name. Only a celebrity can get away with that sort of bollocks.

If you like Nori then use Nora or something else to give the same nn

WTFsMyUserName · 27/06/2018 21:38

As well as being seaweed, Nori is also the name of one of the animals on Hey Duggee 😬

buttercup54321 · 27/06/2018 22:30

North is awful and everyone will think you copied Kim anyway.

EstrellaDamn · 27/06/2018 22:36

In Scotland Norrie is short for Norman. Baaad old man name. Big big no to North!

Bagadverts · 27/06/2018 22:45

I don't keep up with the Kardashian's. Googled "North as first name". First two links were to baby name websites, after that related to Kardashian.

I'm not keen anyway - although it has been used as a first name I just associate it with a direction.

Joeybee · 28/06/2018 05:28

Honestly I think it's a terrible name. Also people will just assume you've got your inspiration from the Kardashians, even if you say otherwise.

Booie09 · 28/06/2018 06:37

It's up to you what you call your child....but everyone on the planet would associate it with KK and Kanye and how many times would you have to say it's nothing to do with them and that your not fans....I'm betting millions of times! Think it would wear thin after about a week.

Mousefunky · 28/06/2018 11:03

Barely anyone wouldn’t link this to Kim K. I think hers was made more ridiculous with the surname but it’s still a very silly non-name.

youdialwetile · 28/06/2018 12:44

What about Norris? It means Northerner or Norseman and can be shortened to Norrie.

Reminds me of Norris McWhirter from the Guinness Book of Records tv show.

AlyTab · 28/06/2018 22:03

Well nothing is a name until you use it (as @ErrantBakedBean pointed out). Daisy is a flower, as is rose etc. It's not our top choice for a name, I really just wanted your opinions on it. And fair enough if that is the general consensus.

Thank you, @LuMarie.

Our top choices for girls names are still River, Cora and Clara. For a boy, Leo (Leonardo?) Sam/Samuel and Conner.

Regardless, thank you for your opinions. I know I shouldn't care about what other people think, but I do. I want to pick a name that other people like also. Also, personally I'm not really a fan of Nora. Thank you :)

Where did you see the name if not from the Kardashians?

I love Cora 😍

Thesearepearls · 28/06/2018 22:13

Names can be pretty labelling OP

I was not aware of the Kardashian connection before this thread (thank you MN for opening my eyes) but North did make me splutter. After all why not East or West or South? Or North North West?

Even if points of the compass are going to be a new naming trend they will be very telling of your children's origins. And for me a name should be something that they can take with them wherever they go without anyone instantly associating them with something. Makes people look at the person for themselves IYSWIM

I come at this from the perspective of someone who knows an infant Xavier, a Persephone (how ridiculous - she was always going to be nicknamed Percy with the Poncey parents). But just as super posh names are risible, super chavvy names just are totally labelling too.

I suggest you don't name your child until you meet your child. I was completely set on Marcus which is a family name until I met DS. And then I realised that something so patrician would never be right for him. He was a gurgling inclusive bunch of fun and he could never have been called Marcus.

Wait until you meet your DC. It'll come to you then.

OlumOrange · 28/06/2018 22:18

@AlyTab you will never find a name that someone doesn't have a negative opinion on so pick one you are happy with but also take into consideration the child Thanks

Ginger1982 · 28/06/2018 22:22

River 🙄

AlyTab · 28/06/2018 22:35

@YouKnowWhatIMean Detroit become human. It's a game if you're not into gaming or haven't seen anyone play it. I'm into gaming however and it just kind of stick with me.

@Ginger1982 don't really see how River is eye roll worthy but ta 🖒

Nori is cute! But North is too Kardashian for me!

What about Narelle?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 29/06/2018 11:17

How can it be no connection to the Kardashians? North/Nori West is the original North I’d have thought? It’s entirely to do with the Kardashians I’d say.

I agree Nori is cute and personally once someone is named an unusual name there is only one initial eyebrow-raise and then it’s just accepted. So from that point of view I see no issue with the name... but to deny the Kardashian connection is crazy!

TatianaLarina · 29/06/2018 12:55

I come at this from the perspective of someone who knows an infant Xavier, a Persephone (how ridiculous - she was always going to be nicknamed Percy with the Poncey parents). But just as super posh names are risible, super chavvy names just are totally labelling too.

Only in this country are names with cultural heritage attached - from your examples - Ancient Greek and French/Spanish - considered ‘posh’.

Xavier is quite common name in France and Spain.

TatianaLarina · 29/06/2018 12:57

Another poster misspelling Conor as a first name. Cora, Clara, Sam and Leo are fine. Just stay away from celebs OP.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 29/06/2018 13:04

Nori isn't terrible, but not keen on North and I would definitely associate it with the Kardashian's.

AlyTab · 29/06/2018 16:50

Btw I know that 'Conor' is the Irish spelling of the given name, but 'Conner' is the Scottish spelling of the given name. (I'm Scottish).

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 29/06/2018 17:27

I wouldn't think of the Kardashian's but that's probably down to age and complete lack of interest in so-called ' celebrities ' (whenever I hear the word it makes me think of Cardassians ... grey and a bit scaly). So, for me 'North' just sounds daft as a name - it's a direction or a region (maligned as 'grim oop North...') - I suspect this is the association which will stand the test of time.

But the other names on your list are all pleasant and objectionable.

Branleuse · 29/06/2018 17:28

I know a guy called north, I don't think I'd immediately associate it with Kardashian because I don't really follow that sort of thing

Yutes · 29/06/2018 18:05

Yes Aly. I was thinking of North from Detroit:become human as well!
The Kardashian’s aren’t really on my radar
