Is it ok as a middle name?

OP posts:

I know two children with the middle name Bear. It's an unusual enough choice as it is, no need to make it outright weird by pairing it with Theodore or Edward to make the inevitable Teddy Bear.

I once had a form completed by a parent with their child's details and the middle name was "Wolfie" - even with the quotation marks round it - which seemed a bit... odd. I mean if the quotation marks are to signify a nickname or pet name, why even include it on an official form?

Tobias Bear is infinitely better than Theodore Bear come on!!! but honestly, I don't like Bear as a name in the same way as I kind of like Fox or Wolf. It's not such a name if you see what I mean? It doesn't sound naturally like a name whereas Wolf (to me anyway) does. They're all brave and unusual choices anyway so you know what you like.

shinynewusername · 23/04/2017 13:38

But it's not the OP who has to live with making a brave and unusual choice: it's her DC.

A middle name of Bear is one thing. It's hipster twee as a PP so rightly said and it will instantly date him for the rest of his life, but he can probably live with it. Theodore Bear, however, is setting him up for a lifetime of teasing.

MrsPringles · 23/04/2017 14:20

Whilst I agree that Theodore Bear isn't a great choice (Tobias is better OP) I do think calling her 'fucking stupid' is a bit much Hmm

QueenJulian · 23/04/2017 14:33

I love Wolf! But then I quite like Bear too. I think Wolf is better with Theo though. I'd go:
Theodore Wolf or
Tobias Bear
I do realise Tobias isn't on OP's list!

QueenJulian · 23/04/2017 14:35

Oh sorry, just seen Tobias Bear is on your list OP. Either are good names IMO.

Redlocks28 · 23/04/2017 14:38

Please say this thread isn't real!

Empireoftheclouds · 23/04/2017 14:56

do think calling her 'fucking stupid' is a bit much I said 'don't be so fucking stupid'. I also said later 'it is fucking stupid'

What I didn't say is you are fucking stupid. And there is a difference.

But I stand by what I said, saddling a child with a name like Theodore bear IS ducking stupid. To call your child that would BE a fucking stupid thing to do. That doesn't mean i think the OP is stupid. I don't know anything about them so couldn't make that judgement, but Theodore bear Hmm definitely falls into the fucking stupid category

plaintomatopasta · 23/04/2017 15:05

Well I just tested it out and MY Bear just turned round when I called Theodore Bear so it seems to work. Although to be fair he keeps asking us to call him Sparky. Now that's a name that won't look good on job applications!

Lemondrop09 · 23/04/2017 15:29

I think Bear is fine for a middle name, but I really don't think you can pair it with Theodore.

Wolf is also fine as a middle name, but it's quite a fierce name, where as I think Theodore is a very gentle name. They clash a bit.

Tobias Bear works best out of your suggestions.

flumpybear · 23/04/2017 16:57

With a name like fox I suspect it may be viewed that it was a surname perhaps your maiden name, but Theodore Bear Jones (or whatever) is three steps closer to bonkers

Kazzawazza69 · 23/04/2017 17:11

I would go with Theodore Wolf or Tobias Bear.

sparklefarts · 23/04/2017 17:16

Both Bear and Wolf are bad name choices

StarsAndStripes18 · 24/04/2017 06:06

Henry, I love Tobias Bear but then I also think Bear is lovely for a first name!

It hasn't done Bear Grylls any harm (and yes I know his 'real' name is Edward)!

I love all my own boy's names and they suit them but just sometimes I wish we'd been a little braver with our choices as I have an unusual very uncommon name and I absolutely love it!!

flibberdy · 03/05/2017 21:33

So has anyone mentioned that Cheryl Cole has named her boy Bear?? Aiiiiiii!!!

SunshineDeLaSoul · 03/05/2017 21:36

Chezza has just ruined the name forevermore.

Laura2507 · 03/05/2017 22:44

Not only called him Bear, but surname is Payne. Bear Payne!

greeeen · 03/05/2017 22:48

I don't like Theodore Bear as even if you don't use the nn Teddy, others will. I do like Tobias Bear though, Toby Bear as a nn sounds OK. Prefer Bear to Wolf personally.

Lizardtoes · 03/05/2017 22:50

What about robaire? Sounds similar but isn't bear

RuthB4 · 04/05/2017 16:49

Definitely not!! I don't think you can seriously consider using Bear as a middle name, but even more so if his first name is Theodore!! I'm sorry but i really think it's unfair to the child, and his future adult self.

Would your partner be happy if that was his own name?

RuthB4 · 04/05/2017 16:49

Keep it as a nickname!

CoolCarrie · 04/05/2017 16:53

Poor child!

Ham69 · 04/05/2017 19:55

I've heard Bear several times recently. Don't mind it but have a feeling a lot of the male population born this last couple of years to now are called Teddy/ Ted or Bear. Good names but becoming more popular if that bothers you.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 04/05/2017 19:58

Just dreadful.

Floggingmolly · 04/05/2017 20:40

Were you deprived of soft toys as a child, op? Is that the reason you saw your newborns and thought "at last I have my very own cuddly thing, I'll call him fox/bear/wolf/something usually reserved for a wild animal"?
