Is it ok as a middle name?

OP posts:

Henry but that's what most people would think but I also don't think Wolf is much better, if you want a strong name after an animal Llama, Meerkat, or Porcupine are all good choices

Empireoftheclouds · 23/04/2017 01:20

it really wasn't to do with Teddy Bear tell yourself that as much as you like, but teddy is and always will be a VERY common nickname associated with Theodore: essentially you would be calling your child teddy bear. Bear was bad enough without the Theodore bit. And wolf? WTF

TyneTeas · 23/04/2017 01:34

If you are asking is it because you realise it's not okay, or because you believe it is and want validation?

littleoldladywho · 23/04/2017 01:34

Theodore Bear is hilarious. I would nod, smile, say how sweet, and then I would snigger behind my hand when I got home. Hormones are terrible terrible things. He'll be a weedy thin haired ginger accountant who is scared of spiders for sure.

I am lol at Bear or Wolf though. We have both passing our back yard and it's still too 1980s Gladiator for my tastes. I knew a little boy called Wolf back in the 90s. I think he changed it as soon as he was 18.

Theo is fine. Theodore Bear is what happens when you read too many pregnancy mags and your brain turns to mush.

toffee1000 · 23/04/2017 01:51

No. Just don't.
I think it's a bit weird giving babies animal names. Would you call your child Dog? Budgie? Ferret?

NuffSaidSam · 23/04/2017 02:10

I think Theodore Bear is better than Theodore Wolf. How about:

Theodore Jaguar
Theodore Tree-Frog
Theodore T-Rex
Theodore Ferret
Theodore Mole-Rat

Or sticking with the Gladiators theme:

Theodore Rhino
Theodore Cobra
Theodore Falcon
Theodore Panther
Theodore Hawk

SuperBeagle · 23/04/2017 03:46

Bear as a middle name, in general, is fine.

But Theodore Bear is not.

Catinthecorner · 23/04/2017 04:35

Edward or Theodore with the nickname Bear is fine (Edward is preferable).

Teddy Bear is the sort of thing that gets your child a place on the stately homes thread.

neonrainbow · 23/04/2017 04:43

It is stupid though. Calling your child teddy bear. Or theodore wolf. What on earth are you thinking?!

Jooni · 23/04/2017 05:53

I don't think Bear is terrible, especially as a middle name. It's very hipster/celeb and feels a little bit faddy to me, but I don't find it ridiculous... unless you pair it with Theodore, sorry!

Go with Wolf. Same vibe but you completely avoid the Teddy Bear issue.

flumpybear · 23/04/2017 06:35

No, just no - he will be teased relentlessly at school - give him a name not a nick name. All my kids I call xxxx-bear as a nick name --- it's cute but as an actual name it's just wrong and he won't thank you for it when he's picked on at school

GinIsIn · 23/04/2017 06:38

Oh please don't do something so silly to an actual human being! Why would you voluntarily turn your child into the punchline of a joke? It's like naming your child Drew Peacock, or Asa Hole or I.P. Freely.

GinIsIn · 23/04/2017 06:41

PS My son is called Teddy. Some of the family call him Little Bear as a nickname. Because it's evolved organically it's sweet. And because he's a newborn. We would actually CALL him that, because he will have to live with it when he's 30, not just when he's 3.

user1492287253 · 23/04/2017 06:48

There are several bears in my dds school in reception. I think its absolutely fine if you have sleb parents and go to a school full of such kids called blue and twinkle. Not so much if you live in a market town in bedfordshire and go to the local comp.

shinynewusername · 23/04/2017 06:56

Please let this be a wind-up.

OP, think back to your school days. How would Theodore Bear have got on in your playground? And yes, names come in and out of fashion, but playground bullies don't change.

frums · 23/04/2017 07:36

I love Bear. I know a six your last of Bear, it's his first name and all the kids in his class think it's v cool.

frums · 23/04/2017 07:37

Should say "six year old"

shinynewusername · 23/04/2017 07:50

all the kids in his class think it's v cool

That's because they are 6. Wait till Teddy Bear is 13.

MrsNuckyThompson · 23/04/2017 07:56

Please don't do this to your son!!

Ceto · 23/04/2017 08:08

Theodore Bear? You have to be joking.

plaintomatopasta · 23/04/2017 08:10

My son is called Bear! Real name Theodore.

shinynewusername · 23/04/2017 08:17

As a nickname, it's super-cute plain Smile

CaoNiMartacus · 23/04/2017 08:17

The height of hipster-twee.

user1243 · 23/04/2017 08:18

Does Orcan work it means bear cub. Smile

Ca55andraMortmain · 23/04/2017 08:25

I actually like bear as a middle name and came close to giving it to DD. But you really can't use it with Theodore. I would call him Theodore with a different middle name and use bear as a nickname.
