Yoshi or Taiga?

Sister is Sakura Smile

We love Taiga (it makes us think of the forest) so it goes well with his sister's name. Have always loved Yoshi though.

Which would you pick? Thank you!

I know that Yoshi is a popular name in Japan. However, here, it is associated with Mario. My DTs have a yoshi collection of over 40 dinosaurs, so they would find it cool!

kilmuir · 12/02/2017 08:15

Both horrendous

Zippidydoodah · 12/02/2017 08:23

Whoops!! Sorry! Grin

Spottytop1 · 12/02/2017 08:28

I'd choose Taiga, I too associate Yoshi with a cartoon character ( which is a shame as it's a lovely name)

VanillaSugar · 12/02/2017 08:36

I vote for Taiga. There are people about who will assume you called your son Yoshi after the Mario game and are too stupid to understand that Yoshi was a name BEFORE the character was invented. I foresee conversations like this:

"Why did you call your son after a Mario game?"

"I didn't, Yoshi is a traditional Japanese name going back for generations.'

"Are you sure? Had Nintendo been around that long?"

I get this with my RL surname. It does not have an unusual spelling but it is not the most well known version of the surname. I spell it out to people who say "No A on the end?" "NO, there is no A on the end." "Are you sure?" Yessssss!!!!!!

Purplebluebird · 12/02/2017 08:44

I prefer Taiga. Yoshi is a dinosaur friend for Mario.

Yet they would probably not raise an eyebrow at a boy named Mario (esp if of Italian heritage).

TurkeyDinosaurs · 12/02/2017 09:00

Sakura is nice. It would be nice to keep up the nature theme. What about Ki 木?

AgathaRaisonDetra · 12/02/2017 09:03

Errol proving vanilla's point there.

TurkeyDinosaurs · 12/02/2017 09:07

Perhaps pronounce it more"key"? Don't know if that would sound weird to you?

babymouse · 12/02/2017 09:08

Yoshi is fab! (And a family name of mine so I'm biased 😉)

SerialReJoiner · 12/02/2017 09:10

Taiga and Sakura are a bit rhymy to my ear. I could be wrong with that, of course!! I like Yoshi very much.

StillaChocoholic · 12/02/2017 09:22

I'm leaning towards Yoshi but quite like them both. Sorry, no help there really Grin

DH's choice of name if we ever have a girl is Sakura, he loves it. Currently pregnant with boy no 2 and he wants to name him Sasuke, I've agreed to it as a middle name as I'm not sure how I feel about him having a Japanese name but no actual ties to Japan

strawberrypenguin · 12/02/2017 09:24

Yoshi would be my pick but they are both lovely

SweepTheHalls · 12/02/2017 09:25

Taiga!

ProfAnnieT · 12/02/2017 09:28

Taiga as both names will get shortened, and I personally favour Tai over Yosh as an abbreviated name.

KlingybunFistelvase · 12/02/2017 09:30

Both nice, but I especially love Yoshi.

Sakura is very pretty too.

MorningHeavyWeight · 12/02/2017 09:30

My preference leans towards Taiga. Both names are lovely and fit so well with your daughter's beautiful name.

I don't understand why Yoshi being a character in a game would put people off using it. Plenty of boys named Thomas get through life successfully without associations with tank engines holding them back.

123bananas · 12/02/2017 09:34

I like Yoshi. I know someone who is called that name. Never had a problem in the UK.

Although I like Taiga too, and think it maybe goes better with Sakura.

StillaChocoholic your DH must be a Naruto fan!

thebakerwithboobs · 12/02/2017 09:35

Both lovely. I love Yoshi. The only thing with Taiga as someone else has said is I think you will end up with some people calling him Tay-ga and some Teye-ga

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/02/2017 09:38

I prefer Taiga. Yoshi isn't bad at all but sounds more like more of a "cute" name rather than one which will suit an adult. Sakura is lovely too.

TanteRose · 12/02/2017 09:39

Another vote for Taiga

TalkingofMichaelAngel0 · 12/02/2017 09:45

I didnt like either at the start if the thread but once i had said them in my head for two pages i thought yoshi and then when id said then for three pages im leaning towards taiga. My friend married a japanese woman and three children have beautiful japanese names and one has a boring english one Grin

Elbi · 12/02/2017 09:50

Agree with pp that there are a few ways Brits might pronounce Taiga. My first thought was Tay-ga followed by Ta-ee-ga and only realised it could be Tiger after reading others' comments! Very cool name but you'd have to be prepared for idiots like me getting it wrong. Love Yoshi. Did make me think of the dinosaur but will kids growing up now know Super Mario?

ohlittlepea · 12/02/2017 09:51

Yoshi 😍
