Yoshi or Taiga?

Sister is Sakura Smile

We love Taiga (it makes us think of the forest) so it goes well with his sister's name. Have always loved Yoshi though.

Which would you pick? Thank you!

Onewithforce I thought this too! But also maybe the op doesn't care where the people reading come from?! I'm not Japanese Wink but for what it's worth I like Taiga best OPSmile. Congratulations on the new baby!

melonribena · 11/02/2017 23:40

I think both are lovely but Yoshi for me will always be associated with Mario and could be potential for teasing?

TheoriginalLEM · 11/02/2017 23:40

Taiga - sounds mysterious and full of life. Yoshi doesn't float my boat.

Hamsolo · 11/02/2017 23:40

I think they both sound good to this Anglo Saxon ear! Yoshi is my favourite, though. I love the name Sakura too. Very pretty.

ChristmasSeacow · 11/02/2017 23:41

Sakura is cherry blossom, I think. Very special to Japanese people.

Speaking as an Anglo Saxon Wink I like both of them. Maybe Taiga nudges it because of the forest (ive been there to watch wild bears - amazing!). But I think either works with Sakura.

Moosieloo · 11/02/2017 23:42

Thank you Smile

No, I don't mind where you come from, haha Smile it's nice that so many of you like the names.

@LovingLola no problem x

Sakura means cherry blossom, which I think is lovely.

Sakura is cherry blossom, I think.

Oh that's beautiful!!

Xmasbaby11 · 11/02/2017 23:43

Yoshi gets my vote! Not keen on animal names if the other one is pronounced tiger.

Zippidydoodah · 11/02/2017 23:43

Taiga, for sure! Yoshi to me m, and many others, is a green dinosaur from super mario. Taiga is cool (even/especially with the "tiger" association!)

Zippidydoodah · 11/02/2017 23:45

How about yoshimi?

Moosieloo · 11/02/2017 23:50

@Zippidydoodah thank you, but unfortunately that's a girls name Smile

Will you be using kanji for the name? DD has a totally European name by DS has a name that sounds like Taiga

MsVTired · 11/02/2017 23:58

I prefer Taiga sounds lovely, i really wanted the the name Sakura for Dd when i was pregnant but we aren't Japenese and i had a few funny looks when i put the name out there.

Sakura and Taiga go nicely together.

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 11/02/2017 23:59

I think they're both great names. They each have a downside: Taiga is phonically ambiguous to Anglophone eyes so you'll probably get an even split guessing "Tay-ga" and "Tiger" and also many westerners will assume it's a girl's name because it ends with an a, and Yoshi is primarily a green dinosaur sidekick (but a cute and much loved sidekick, so you could do much worse).

Of the two I'd go for Taiga.

hunibuni · 12/02/2017 00:00

Oops posted too soon. DS's name works with the kanji we used so it works in both countries but DD will definitely stand out as being foreign, which might be a consideration down the line. My friend's son has a Japanese first name but is known by his European second name, so that might work too.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/02/2017 00:08

They're lovely names, I'm with Taiga too. (They're easy for anglophones to latch onto as well)

Starlingsintheslipstream · 12/02/2017 00:09

I like both - I don't think Yoshi has negative connotations. My dc adore Mario and would be beside themselves to have a friend called Yoshi!

Sophronia · 12/02/2017 01:07

Taiga.

ReapAndSow · 12/02/2017 01:17

Both are great names. Taiga made me think of forests but that's not a bad connotation. I don't think it's tricky to say. Yoshi will always be The Yoshi in my MARIO obsessed household but that's only because I dont know a real life Yoshi. Smile. The link with Mario wouldn't bother me at all.

NightWanderer · 12/02/2017 01:25

I think Taiga is a more current name. Yoshi seems a bit old fashioned these days.

Jooni · 12/02/2017 07:15

Sakura is gorgeous!

I really like Yoshi, but I do think it's still strongly associated with the Nintendo franchise at the moment. Who knows if that will be an issue when your DS is growing up, though. And he is a very sweet dinosaur!

Still, I'd probably go with Taiga.

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 12/02/2017 07:24

If you live in Surrey then you can't have Yoshi. It is a green dinosaur, which in itself is fine but I can't imagine there will be many other children called Yoshi running around Surrey. This means that other people will think more about the name already because it will be unusual to them and will immediately link it to Mario. More so than the name Barney for example because Barney is already used in different contexts to them and isn't just a purple dinosaur.

I'm sure that's clear as mud!

Taiga is fab.

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 12/02/2017 07:42

I love Yoshi! Don't think it matters if there's a fictional character with the same name- there are plenty of fictional characters with English names and people still use those names.
I wouldn't be 100% sure of how to pronounce Taiga and that puts me off

LotisBlue · 12/02/2017 07:52

I like taiga best

Raines100 · 12/02/2017 07:54

Sakura is beautiful.

I love Taiga. It makes me think of Tiger, and I thinks it's amazing that a Japanese name should have such cool connotations half way around the world in the local tongue.
