'Masculine' girls names?

QuestioningStuff · 12/10/2015 13:10

Posting for my pregnant best friend. She is expecting a girl and really likes 'masculine' girls names (like Alex or Sydney nn Sid) but we're struggling to come up with many.

What masculine girls names are there? Including nick names?

I would use Stevie if I had a girl

I also once sat on a bus and heard someone call a teenage girl 'Stanley' which I thought was great.

As someone who has had to put up with this, please discourage your friend.
I am 40 this Friday, and still an overriding memory from primary school and the first part of secondary school, is being bullied about having "a boy's name".

James

AuntieStella · 12/10/2015 13:16

Hilary, Jocelyn, Tracey and Shirley and Evelyn were all boys names originally.

Morgan
McKenzie
Maddox
Sam
Lenny

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 12/10/2015 13:18

Francesca known as Frankie.

That way your friend gets to use a masculine name, but her DD also has a more feminine name should she want one in the future Grin.

BackforGood · 12/10/2015 13:23

Well there are quite a lot that can be used for either sex - is that what you mean?

Chris or Chrissie or Christie
Jo(e)
Robin
Ali (Alistair/Alison)
Bailey
Faith
Eden
Sam (Samantha/Samuel)
Nic (Nicola/Nicole / Nicholas)
Billie/Billy
Fran (Francis / Frances / Francesca)
Alex (as you said)
Rather old fashioned standards such as 'Hilary' which can be for either sex)
Jamie

Erica

Fugghetaboutit · 12/10/2015 13:34

Because it sounds like a man's name to my ears and a nn of 'Art' is masculine too. Confused for you Smile

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 12/10/2015 13:45

Does she mean unisex.
Ashley
Alex
Toni
Terri
Stevie
Samantha (Sam)
Georgia (George)
Danielle (Danni)
Obviously none of mine or anyone else's business but I just cant understand why she doesn't want to give her daughter a pretty girly name. There are so many gorgeous names out there.

insan1tyscartching · 12/10/2015 13:55

Kerry
Georgina
Theodora
Josephine
Billie (Wilhemina)
Tommy (Thomasina)
Edwina
Victoria

TheCraicDealer · 12/10/2015 13:57

It's her baby but I dislike having a obvious preference for perceived feminine or masculine names. It reinforces preconceptions about gender roles and that boys names are seen as "strong" or somehow better, equally that girls names should simply be pretty and attractive sounding. What happened to just liking a name for its own sake?

PrimalLass · 12/10/2015 14:10

Blake. Although I liked Blake Lively until she called her daughter James. Poor kid.

CakeRattleandRoll · 12/10/2015 15:19

Ainsley
Ashton
Blair
Bobbie
Casey
Cameron
Courtney
Devon
Gerry
Jessie

maybebabybee · 12/10/2015 15:21

The following are on our shortlist:

Georgie
Ronnie

Short for Georgina or Georgia and Veronica respectively but I wouldn't be giving my hypothetical DD the long version of the name as I only like the short versions

Bobbie is also on our shortlist, and I liked Freddie for a girl but DP was not keen.

maybebabybee · 12/10/2015 15:22

I just cant understand why she doesn't want to give her daughter a pretty girly name.

Define 'pretty and girly'. Confused

Pixi2 · 12/10/2015 15:22

Taylor
Quinn
Finlay (primarily a boys name but we had it on our list for a dd)
Harriet (Harry)
Georgia/Georgiana (George)
Eden
Adeline (Adie)
Haydyn?
