'Masculine' girls names?

QuestioningStuff · 12/10/2015 13:10

Posting for my pregnant best friend. She is expecting a girl and really likes 'masculine' girls names (like Alex or Sydney nn Sid) but we're struggling to come up with many.

What masculine girls names are there? Including nick names?

OP posts:

Ilooki I've never heard of a man called Florence! Are you in the UK? I know a few Florians / Florents, so I suppose it isn't that surprising

The male Florences I know are Irish. Not very common these days for young children but not unheard of either. It is a popular male name in the south of Ireland.

Its not unlike Laurence. So OP I give you Florence and Laurie?

originalmavis · 13/10/2015 22:54

I like Jocelin/Jocelyn. Looks weird when written out though.

BertrandRussell · 13/10/2015 22:57

Fascinating that nobody ever asks for "feminine" boy's names.......

Racundra · 13/10/2015 23:03

Well... they could use Florence!
Or Shirley
Hilary
Lesley
etc

Shockers · 13/10/2015 23:06

I love the names Erica and Bryony.

absterfabster21 · 13/10/2015 23:08

Drew or Jamie

pieceofpurplesky · 13/10/2015 23:23

Frankie
Robyn
Lenny (from helen)
Georgie
Brody
Sydney
Jaime (my favourite girls name)

Osquito · 13/10/2015 23:25

Seconding Rory, though personally would make it just that as I find Aurora a bit much.

Danny (Danielle, Daniella)
Andy (Andrea, Andromeda, etc)
Jamie
Ashley
Morgan
Carla
Xander
Maxine
Daria

Has Alex been mentioned? Or Charlotte (Charlie)?
I think of feminine names as names such as Holly, Poppy, Ava, Maria, Rose, Wendy, Sarah, Juliet Elizabeth, Emma etc. There are many many names that particularly feminine names - Megan, Imogen, Helen, Joanne etc .Some would describe them as 'strong' names but to me they are names that if said aloud and were unfamiliar, one wouldn't necessarily know if they were male or female.

Her father was convinced she was a boy and wanted a boy. They chose the name Barrie and stuck with it when it turned out she wasn't a boy! Her middle name is Clare but her father insisted she be known as Barrie!

Her father sounds like an idiot who couldn't announce his disappointment in any clearer terms!

Barrie! FFS.

AmysTiara · 14/10/2015 11:53

Ellis Jody Max Reagan Corey Cameron Finn Reece

That last post of mine didn't make sense - I meant of course -

I have a Syd :)

I like Rae, Billie, Stevie, Harriet (Harry), Bobby, Georgie, Ronnie

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 14/10/2015 14:29

I know a little Harri (short for some long Greek name) and think is really cute.
Sid is cool too.

FattyNinjaOwl · 14/10/2015 14:39

I have Bernadette which I think is gorgeous (obviously) but that can be shortened to Bernie, which is quite masculine. (My mum is Bernie)

MrsFogi · 14/10/2015 15:00

Three of the coolest (and most beautiful) women I have known were called Claude, Xaviere and Robin. Love all those names but dh vetoed them.

BackforGood · 14/10/2015 19:58

Every time I see this thread - in my 'Threads I'm On' or in active convos..... I just want to burst into that good ole Country and Western classic, 'A Boy named Sue' Wink

pootlebug · 14/10/2015 20:04

I know a Lenny who is Leonora officially but everyone calls her Lenny.

Yika · 14/10/2015 20:28

Fatty has reminded me of a strong sounding name I love - Berenice (could also be a Bernie, which I also like).

Artandco · 14/10/2015 22:37

Or leonora with nn Leo

catlover91 · 14/10/2015 22:41

Bostyn

Peaceloveandpartyrings · 14/10/2015 22:44

Louise means "warrior" Grin not masculine sounding, but very cool strong meaning.
