'Masculine' girls names?

QuestioningStuff · 12/10/2015 13:10

Posting for my pregnant best friend. She is expecting a girl and really likes 'masculine' girls names (like Alex or Sydney nn Sid) but we're struggling to come up with many.

What masculine girls names are there? Including nick names?

Pretty girly name

Grin

That's made my day (sorry, poster, I suspect you didn't quite mean it that way)

Loads of girls names are "pretty and girly" in the long, and quite masculine in the short - Alex(andra), George/ie(ina), Stevie(Stephanie) etc

Artemis is a Greek goddess! You can't get more feminine that that!

HellKitty · 12/10/2015 16:51

What boy's names does she like?

Tom? Dick? Harry? Alex? Joe? Nigel? Chris? Kit? Hal? George? etc etc

Decided on that first, then call her daughter the female version and use the common male nickname.

Tomasina / Ricardia / Henrietta / Alexandra / Josephine / Nigella / Christine, Katherine and various forms of / Henrietta (again) / Georgina or Georgette

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/10/2015 17:02

Artemis Fowl, who will be more familiar to kids than a Greek goddess, is a male character though.

well my children have never read Artemis Fowl and know very well that Artemis was a Greek Goddess [smug face] Wink lol

BreeVDKamp · 12/10/2015 17:06

Bertie (I'd go for Alberta but could be Roberta etc too)
Also love Joey!

BreeVDKamp · 12/10/2015 17:07

Also I always suggest Ryan on threads like these, like Sandra Bullock in Gravity!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/10/2015 17:08

Well mine are familiar with both Greek goddesses and teenage criminal geniuses. Wink. Personally I think it's a lovely name for a girl.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/10/2015 17:10

Smugger not smugglerBlush damn you autocorrect.

I like Billie.

I am not fond of the trend for taking a very previously male name like James and giving it to a girl. It's all 'oh I'm so cool and unisex' but actually to me it reinforces the idea that girl is lesser. Because I'd bet everything I own that Blake Lively and Jessica Simpson and Mila whotsit and the like would never have named a boy Elizabeth or Sarah. It's ok for a girl to sound like a boy. But a boy like a girl, well that's just insulting.

Sorry, little side track there. I think the neutral thing works better with either very established unisex names - Alex - or the totally new - River- or where they are a nickname for a longer name.

I know a little girl called Robyn Dylan ? that's a first name and middle name too not Dylan as a surname.

I also have a cousin Robyn and dd's friends mum is a Robyn.. I think it's popular over this way ?
