Karin/Karen and other 'K' names?

PrettyLittleMitty · 13/09/2014 11:21

We are due our second dd in 2 weeks and still haven't got a name.

We agree that we want to use a 'K/C' name as they sound nice with our rather unusual surname.

I like Karin (ka-rin) dh prefers Karen (ka-ren), dd1 has named the baby Carrie (which makes me think of the film of the same name!).

Opinions and suggestions needed, thank you.

Are you from the UK? I think Karin would be mistaken for Karen all the time here. Karen is very dated, almost like Tracy. Carrie is lovely. Think Bradshaw not blood and gore!

JapaneseMargaret · 13/09/2014 11:32

Carrie is lovely.

Karin is a German name to me - not that there's anything wrong with that, but if I knew the name was spelt that way, I'd assume a German connection.

K names don't tend to go down well on here. Especially Irish names that have been K-ified. I have to admit, Kate is the only K name I really like. Otherwise, I pretty much always prefer C over K.

Foolishlady · 13/09/2014 11:33

Karen is dated but I've always thought it a nice name - the first of those names due a comeback I think!

PumpkinBones · 13/09/2014 11:34

Kerensa - it is Cornish. My mum was disappointed I had two boys and couldn't use it!

prettybird · 13/09/2014 11:37

I know a Karin (Kah-reen, equal emphisis), a Karien (Ka-REEN, emphasis on the second syllable) and a Kasha.

If ds had been a dd, Kathryn, Catriona and Caitlin was on the short list.

Mojito100 · 13/09/2014 11:53

How about Kaela pronounced Kay-lah.

PrettyLittleMitty · 13/09/2014 11:54

Thanks all.

We can't use Kate as we already have a close family member called Kate, lovely name though.

Good point about Karin being mispronounced as Karen too. Dh really likes Karen, I didn't realise that it was dated, good to hear your views.

I can't decide!! Thanks for your input, lots of great points.

i don't think Karen is dated, it's a classic name.

I know a Karin but it's pronounced Kareen

I agree that Karin will be mistaken for Karen, and Karen is a 70s name to me (and it'll be a generation or two before those names are in vogue again!).

What about names like Clara or Cara?

MagpieMama · 13/09/2014 12:07

Kirstie
Kate
Kitty
Karolina

AntoinetteCosway · 13/09/2014 12:07

I know a Kahren (Car-ren) but she's American where I think it's more common. It's pretty though and I don't normally like K names. An option?

Lucked · 13/09/2014 12:17

Can't really help with k names but lots of lovely C names out there.

Cara has a similar sound to Karen and is lovely. Caroline is a classic. I have always loved Charis too.

NickiFury · 13/09/2014 12:20

I don't Karen is at all in the same league as Tracey. I like it. I'd think "ahhhhh" if I met a little baby Karen Smile

gamescompendium · 13/09/2014 12:26

I think Karen is fine, more classic than dated IMHO. I prefer it to Karin.

How about Clara, Charlotte, Kirsten/Kristen, Constance?

PrettyLittleMitty · 13/09/2014 12:45

Hmmm, I do like Karyn. Perhaps that's where i'm going wrong with Karin, the spelling is confusing? Dh still likes Karen and can't see its dated? Lots of great suggestions thanks everyone.
