Karin/Karen and other 'K' names?

PrettyLittleMitty · 13/09/2014 11:21

We are due our second dd in 2 weeks and still haven't got a name.

We agree that we want to use a 'K/C' name as they sound nice with our rather unusual surname.

I like Karin (ka-rin) dh prefers Karen (ka-ren), dd1 has named the baby Carrie (which makes me think of the film of the same name!).

Opinions and suggestions needed, thank you.

I have a Katherine, she's Kathy (her choice) at the moment. I love the name, I had it picked out for a dd when I was about 10 (which is younger than she is now!)

Kendra

Was the name of my Canadian pen-pal called Kendra. Bit dated in North America, I think? But has never been that popular in the UK.

How about Carrie with a K, Karrie?

Carmel
Carolina
Carlotta
Katherine is lovely and I do actually like Karen despite the 70s connection.

HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs · 13/09/2014 21:42

What about Cassie?

Keren
Cora
Camilla
Katrin ( a Scottish loch)
Catriona
Cassie

Karen is definitely due a come back. I know a few mature women called this and they are all lovely which makes me think the name is too!

mathanxiety · 13/09/2014 23:53

Charis (pr just like Carys) could yield Carrie as a nn.

I think Carrie is really nice. It could be short for Caroline or Karolina too.

PetaPipa · 14/09/2014 00:06

Karen is a great name. It's good that it's not currently fashionable imo - your daughter will be ahead of the trend!

Mutteroo · 14/09/2014 00:26

Cassidy
Kerensa
Cerys
Karis/Karys
Carey
Caitlin/Kaitlin
Callie

Anything but Karen. I know many with this name with most of them married to a Paul. (Obviously many different Pauls, not all married to the same man!)
The youngest Karen I know is 42, the oldest is 74. Really don't like the name yet love Kerensa?

minkah · 14/09/2014 00:35

Karen isn't a dated name. Karen blixen, the author. Karen black, the actress.

It's classic name.

Very elegant and karrie is a sweet diminutive.

Thanks everyone. I do like Karen but i'm worried that its not a 'baby' name, I can see an older child or an adult with the name but I don't know of it would fit a baby? Does anyone know what it can be shortened to?

The girl in outnumbered is Karen. It has always jarred with me, It does not really sit right with Ben and jake which are currently popular names whereas Karen is 70s.

Similar sounding names which are less 70s are Carys, cara, Clara, even Kathryn/ Catherine which I think is less dated somehow than Karen.

strawberrydaquari · 14/09/2014 11:05

I know an under 30 karen, I like the name. Not unusual, easy to spell but not common enough that she would be one of 5 in a class at school

DrCarolineTodd · 14/09/2014 11:07

Karen will be shortened to Kaz. Yuck.

How about:
Kerry
Kim
Kelly
Keira
Katrina
Carla
Caitlin
Catrin
Cleo

thedevilinside · 14/09/2014 11:29

I love the name Karen, and I detest the anti-K snobbishness that you only find on Mumsnet, however, I really wished I had named DD Carrie, I went for something safer at the time.

threepiecesuite · 14/09/2014 11:32

I know a Keryn and a Kerin and I love both of these names.

mrsspratt · 14/09/2014 11:36

I'm a Kara. How about that?

barmybunting · 14/09/2014 11:47

I went to school with someone called Carin, nickname was Carrie. Pronounced the same way as Karin rather than Karen. Any use?

Kaekae · 14/09/2014 12:00

Didn't know about this anti-K snobbishness....I would always go for a K name then just to be different in that case! Grin

thegreylady · 14/09/2014 12:42

Cassie (Cassandra)
Kathleen
Kezia

PrettyLittleMitty · 14/09/2014 12:51

I didn't know about anti-k snobbery either, I don't understand it? Some great suggestions thank you all.

manicinsomniac · 14/09/2014 19:38

I'm not overly keen on Karen. I don't think it's that dated though, I'm sure it must get used sometimes, if only due to Outnumbered. I prefer Karin.

Other K sound names:

Katherine, Kaitlyn, Katie, Kitty, Katya, Katerina, Karina, Karenza, Katinka, Kennedy, Kenzie, Kendra, Kayleigh, Kylie, Kelly, Kerry, Kelsey, Keeley, Kayla, Kyla, Kyra, Kia, Kaya, Kimberly, Kendall, Kinsley, Keira, Carol, Caroline, Carolina, Catriona, Catalina, Cara, Clara, Carla, Cara, Cora, Coral, Cornelia, Constance, Connie, Cassandra, Cassidy, Cassia, Cassie, Clarissa, Callie, Carrie, Courtney, Claudia, Crystal, Coco, Chloe, Carmen, Camryn, Camilla, Camille, Colette, Colleen, Cleo, Clea.

minkah · 14/09/2014 21:26

If you use the name Karen, the diminutive is Karrie or Kara.
