Help me find a boys name...

I am going to be really fussy, dismissive for ridiculous reasons and probably sound like an arse on this thread. But I am really stuck. We've had a girls name set for a few months and I am still happy with it. But the boys name.. we keep going off them.

I need help.

I don't want anything common, in both senses of the word.

Our list thus far has been:
Jackson
Deacon
Brodie
Caleb

And I liked them all at first, and now I hate them. I think they sound chavvy. I have a DS with a top 10 name and thankfully he goes by a lesser used NN anyway, but still, I don't want to repeat that. He's one of 4 in his year.

HELP!

Lancelot

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 15:11

Well, that's totally true but I don't mind names that have a nice association!

Like Caleb. I think of the Kings of Leon. This is fine.

ComposHat · 22/01/2014 15:12

If you live in Scotland I guess you know about Deacon Brodie (the c18th gentleman thief) and Jackson Brodie the Edinburgh based detective?
What are you thinking?

kawaii · 22/01/2014 15:15

Emmett

Hayden

Asher

Garrick

ComposHat · 22/01/2014 15:19

Oh and is it really necessary to use hateful terms like chavvy/schemie so regularly op?

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 15:21

I do know about them, yes.

Jackson Brodie is fictional
William Brodie (a Deacon) was a councillor who lived a double life as a thief.

I find Hayden chavvy.

OP posts:
Juno77 · 22/01/2014 15:22

Maybe not necessary, I am just trying to convey how I feel.

OP posts:
ComposHat · 22/01/2014 15:27

Could you not hust say you don't like them or they aren't to your taste? Rather than attaching an abusive term to them?

. Especially as someone more judgemental than me would consider your choice of names to be popular amongst the lower end of the socio-economic scale.

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 15:49

Well, I could do but I don't think 'chavvy' is an abusive term, and it describes what I am feeling so I'll just carry on.

And I too consider some of the names I like to be lower on the socio economic scale (as you prefer), hence my not using them.

I don't think Caleb is, I don't think many biblical names are but I am prepared to be contested.

OP posts:
ComposHat · 22/01/2014 16:05

Well if it isn't an abusive phrase what is it? A mark of praise? Value-neutral?

AngelaDaviesHair · 22/01/2014 16:06

Yep, wind-up.

SomewhatSilly · 22/01/2014 16:13

Soren
Linus

notso · 22/01/2014 16:19

How the hell do you associated Caleb with Kings of Leon but LEON with the film?!
I know Caleb Followill is a band member but it is certainly not my first association.
I wasn't saying naming your child isn't a big deal before, I know it is. I really struggled with DC4. You just seem to be attaching quite vague connections to names and I don't think they would always be there if you start saying the name 1000 times a day if you see what I mean.

Theonlyoneiknow · 22/01/2014 16:20

I think Caleb from Kings of Leon comes across as a bit of a nob Grin

BNmum · 22/01/2014 16:21

Tanner, Landon or Grayson?

notso · 22/01/2014 16:32

Soren is lovely. Use that.

I'm guessing OP will say,
Tanner = Sun tan
Landon = London
Grayson = Perry

soontobeslendergirl · 22/01/2014 16:48

Sorry, but I think Caleb is chavvy. There are loads of nicer, less chavvy names on the thread that fit your criteria better but at the end of the day, that is irrelevant if you don't like them.

Based on your views so far, I think your short list should be:

Dexter
Brodie
Austin
Caleb
& Malachi

The last two are not to my taste but you like them :o

cosikitty · 22/01/2014 16:57

How about Broden instead of Brodie?

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 17:04

I also agree the Caleb Followill is a knob.. BUT i've seen them live a few times, and once has special significance (and lovely memories) and when I hear Caleb it comes to mind. So to me, it has a nice connotation.

Tanner is the surname of DH's boss!
Landon I just don't like
Greyson isn't to my taste, but even if it was my cousin just adopted a boy and called him Gray. Would be odd.

I appreciate you think Caleb is chavvy slender. It isn't, to me, but then that is why I am asking - if it is commonly chavvy I wouldn't choose it! Certainly here it isn't, it isn't popular though. If it is considered chavvy elsewhere, I might have to veer away from it.

Don't like Broden as it sounds too much like Brogan, popular for girls here.

Austin I am warming to..

Blimey OP. You are being SO RUDE. I'm not sure why no one has called you on it so far but it's outrageous.

People are just trying to help.

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 17:24

Rude? Where?

I'm responding to peoples suggestions with my opinion.

If I wanted to pretend to be all fake nicey nice then I would have said 'that's lovely thank you' after the first suggestion. The whole point is to be honest, surely!

And I will apologise to you, again on this thread, for making you so enraged. I am not deliberately being obtuse. I DID warn in the OP this I was going to be an arse - I am very fussy.

CecilyP · 22/01/2014 17:31

What about Farquhar? As in 'Finlay, meet Farquhar'. Goes with your liking for surnames as first names, isn't chavvy and is unlikely to catch on in a big way any time soon.

weebarra · 22/01/2014 17:31

There is nothing wrong with being fussy but I think you are being disingenuous if you think that using the words schemie or chavvy is not offensive.
