Not sure what 'posh' names are... I know that some people are considered 'posh' (in the UK) but names are just that, collection of letters. We tend to associate names with certain people based on their behaviours etc but most names that start out 'posh' work their way down the ranks until they are conisered quite normal.

Names like Hugo, Quentin or Sebastian for boys or Seraphina, Isabella or Antonia might be been regarded as 'posh' a few years ago (if mumsnet is anything to go by...), but they've become quite mainstream as lots of people use them.

I personally love 'elegant' classic names like Constantine, Thaddeus, Alexander, Dominic, Helena, Octavia etc. and don't care whether they are conisered posh or not (or chav or whatever)!

I love most of the names on this tread - they sound lovely, classic and not overused. My favourites are Monty, Hugo, Quentin, Magnus, Cassius, Seraphina, Lucia - do you HAVE to be 'posh' to use them?! It would be a shame imo Grin.

Also, the more non-posh people use these beautiful names, the less 'posh' they will seem!

Woody is the least posh boy I ever went out with. He was from Wolverhampton.

I have quite a few rather posh friends and many of them seem to be favouring Florence or Rose for a girl. There's that it-girl Florence Brudenell-Bruce who goes by the nickname of Flee. Quite cute.

My personal fave posh names include Clementine (Clemmie), Sophia, Rupert, Sebastian, Quentin, Rufus ('that sounds like a dog': DH) and Felix ('that sounds like a cat': DH again).

I think we'll be calling our new baby boy (due in 12 days) Zacharias, and I'm keen on Beau for a middle name (DH still to be convinced - think I may need to go through labour first for the sympathy vote to kick in).

bigbluebump · 27/11/2012 12:56

I like Hugo, Sebastian, Quentin (we have one Smile), Monty and Raphael for boys and Florence, Eleanore, Antonia, Isabel and Cordelia. Not sure if they are still posh nowadays (we're certainly not posh..), I just think they are beautiful classic names.

bigbluebump · 27/11/2012 12:58

WockComble, Zacharias is a lovely name, but he might end up as Zac/Zach.

delilah88 · 27/11/2012 17:16

Is Lucian a posh name?

thegreylady · 27/11/2012 17:40

Miranda nn Mirry
Sebastian nn Seb
Hereward
Elfrida nn Elfie

PerryCombover · 27/11/2012 17:44

St John nice for a middle
Really posh names are hand me downs and therefore really only the names of European royalty
The names you lot are mostly trotting out are from classically educated wealthy folk not truly UC
Lots of Harolds, James, Charles, Edwards, Freds.....what about a Boris?
Girls
Alice, Elizabeth, Catherine, Alexandra, Jane...what about a Beatrice?

WockComble · 29/11/2012 17:38

bigbluebump - yes, he'll be Zac for short, which I love too. Zacharias is an old 19th century name from the Jewish genius side of my family, and a rather uncommon name in the UK right now, which I like.

Delilah - I'd say Lucian is defo posh. Think I snogged one of those once too.

popsicle1984 · 29/11/2012 18:44

There was a chavvy little girl in Hollyoaks called Persephone so I see it as the exact opposite of posh! OTT!

evamummy · 29/11/2012 21:11

In other words, people can be posh/chav/nerdy/cool/whatever, but a name is just that, a name. And a name's association will change over time, depending on who we know with the name.

GingerPCatt · 29/11/2012 21:19

My DH worked for a dutchess and her daughter's nickname was Shrimpy. I have no idea what her real name is.

marriedinwhite · 29/11/2012 22:48

If anyone watched the Antique's Roadshow on Saturday that lovely Bunny Campione told everyone her real name was Anastasia.

If it hadn't been recorded ages ago I'd have said Fiona Bruce had been following this thread. It made me snort.

shoobidoo · 30/11/2012 14:04

I'm not sure many of the names on here are still considered 'posh'. I certainly know quite a few non-posh Hugos, Quentins, Sebastians, Serafinas and a Frances.

I like most of the names on this thread but my favourite 'posh' names would be Lucian and Athena.

EskimoPie · 30/11/2012 17:16

I met an adult Biffy recently Shock.

Love Ophelia.

For boys, love Sebastian and Julian (not sure it's posh but it has the right ring to it, to my ears).

shoobidoo · 30/11/2012 22:38

Biffy sounds like a character from Kipp and Chip, the reading scheme. Doesn't sound/nice posh at all Grin.
