What's your mum called?

Thinking about the cyclical nature of names - those that I used to think of as awful 'granny names' when I was younger - Florence, Edith, Mabel etc - are wildly popular now.

I wonder what the equivalent names will be for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren?

My mum is called Christine (I am in my mid 30s).

MIL is Miriam though.

Graceparkhill · 20/10/2012 00:55

Mum - aged 80 is Isobel and late MIL was Isabel.

Mum was called Topsy when growing up, then mum and more recently nanny

Makes you wonder why we put so much thought into choosing a name.

redrubyshoes · 20/10/2012 01:13

My grandmother Isobel Elizabeth Olivia born 1905

SomersetONeil · 20/10/2012 01:25

My grandmother, born the turn of last century was another Isobel. I was named after her in the 70s and a more old-fashioned, old-lady name you couldn't hope to find. The obituaries were clogging up with them at the time and my Dad had a massive 'what have we done?' moment. Grin They were just a generation ahead of the times...

My DM is Josephine - she's 60. I love her name, she's not so keen and uses Jo.
MIL is Jill.

qumquat · 20/10/2012 15:41

My mum is Bernadette. I can think of at least 5 mums of friends all called Patricia, all in their early 60s. As a child it seemed like all mums were called Pat and all dads were called John.

5ThingsUnderTheBed · 20/10/2012 15:53

My mam is called Susan, and I am early 30s.

MIL is Elsie. DH is the same age as me but his mam had him when she was nearly 40, quite old back then for a child.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 20/10/2012 15:56

My mum's given name was Muriel, but nobody calls her that. She's been Meg since she left home at 18.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 20/10/2012 15:57

SomewhereInCanada · 20/10/2012 16:02

My mum was called Beryl. I'm 41.

fluffydressinggown · 20/10/2012 16:08

Marie, I am late 20s.

She was born on a saints day for the virgin Mary, but her Nana and Auntie were already called Mary so Marie was an alternative. Obviously we are a Catholic family :)

PerfectStranger74 · 20/10/2012 16:09

Julia, I love the name

SchmancyPants · 20/10/2012 16:19

Irene. She was born soon after VE Day in 1944 and it means 'peace' :) . It is pronounced eye- REE- nee though and she has struggled all her life with people calling her eye- REEN, which sounds much uglier to her and to me! I would love to use her name for a DD but I think the eye-REEN issue would worry me too much.

TessOfTheBurbervilles · 20/10/2012 16:40

My mum is called May, chosen because she was born on May Day.

Up until that point, a girl would have been Lillian, but my grandma decided a May Day girl should be called May. Mum was therefore name May Lillian.

I love it and so does she.

Mum is 60.

My MIL is Anne Edith, which was the reverse of her mum's name (Edith Anne). She is 63.

citronella · 20/10/2012 16:47

Vera. I am in my late forties.

sooperdooper · 20/10/2012 16:49

My mum is Linda, and MIL is Bernadette, I'm early 30's - both seem like popular names for that generation

BexGershon · 20/10/2012 18:31

My mum is Simone and MIL is Debra, I'm 24 and both my nan's are Ruth and I know about 6 other Ruth's of their age.
