What's your mum called?

Thinking about the cyclical nature of names - those that I used to think of as awful 'granny names' when I was younger - Florence, Edith, Mabel etc - are wildly popular now.

I wonder what the equivalent names will be for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren?

My mum is called Christine (I am in my mid 30s).

Sandra, I'm in my early thirties and DD has Mum's name (she was born a few days before Mum would have been 50).

Rather expectedly my name has been mentioned many times, [shakes fist] at young parents who gave me such a random old lady name just because they couldn't call me James.

snickers251 · 19/10/2012 10:08

Dm Tracey, mil Debbie both early 50s

Well we are in Essex!

EmpressOfTheSevenScreams · 19/10/2012 10:18

funnypeculiar · 19/10/2012 10:26

Both in their 60s now.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/10/2012 10:32

Quadrangle · 19/10/2012 10:32

Marion. Quite like it.

Shesparkles · 19/10/2012 10:34

My mum was Margaret, MIL Anne, and my godmother is a Marion. I'm 42, they were all born in the 1940s

MolotovBomb · 19/10/2012 10:38

Patricia
Mauven

Caroline
Janette
Mary
Yvonne
Elaine

All born late 1940s-mid 1950s

My Mum's name is Delia (I'm 30). I think its still quite an uncommon name as it was when my Mum was younger. Everyone automatically says... "What, like Delia Smith?"... yes but not as good at cooking Grin.

Just to put it on here, MIL is Gunnel (its Swedish).

I've got a Christine. So many Mums called Christine. It must've been the Emily of its day. Smile

damesauvignonblanc · 19/10/2012 10:49

My mum is called Pascaline; she's not French but was named after a Chanel model apparently. DD was almost (3 hours out!) born on my mum's birthday and therefore narrowly escaped being Pascaline too, which I think would be a bit of a handful for a child today

Quadrangle · 19/10/2012 10:50

I'm reading the Secret Seven to my dd atm and the girl member names are:

Janet,
Barbara,
Pam

which seem like names from my mum's generation to me.

Joyce and Maureen are in the same vein as Barbara and Pam I think.

I quite like Janet

My DM is Valerie, she not keen on it. She was named by the midwife after my GM was so disappointed not to have had a boy! So I can see why that would grate a bit......My GMs name is Emily, she hates that and goes by her middle name. My MIL is Lydia, named after her GM, she doesn't like it either!!!
Luckily, we have a DS so no worries about passing on names!
I'm 36, not too bothered by my name, but there were quite a few of us at school that had the same name.

JessieEssex · 19/10/2012 11:08

Another Christine too! I'm 35. MIL is Linda

bruffin · 19/10/2012 11:17

Although I am a mum of teens, I am a Christine, but from looking at this i am not that much younger than some of the mums mentioned on this board. I have just turned 50.
Feeling very oldSad

beingginger · 19/10/2012 11:19

redpanda13 · 19/10/2012 11:51

My mum is Catherine known as Katie. She is in her early 60's

elvisola · 19/10/2012 12:01

My mum is called Iris, she is 64

womma · 19/10/2012 12:42

Ivy, and so is my MIL, beezarre!

DD has Ivy as a middle name because my mum's been dead for so long I wanted them to have a link.

Funnily enough, a friend has just called her newborn Margaret after her own mum, so we could be looking at having lots of Jeans and Phyllis's about in the future!

GrandPoohBah · 19/10/2012 14:01

Mum is Gwyneth (65), stepmum is Valerie (59) and MIL is Michelle (47).

Nivet · 19/10/2012 14:08

My DM was Josephine and she would be 64 now if she was still alive. She was named after her Uncle Joseph who died in WW2. DS middle name is Joseph.

AnneElliott · 19/10/2012 14:37

Mum is called Margaret and was born in the 40's. MIL is Josephine

LittleBoxes · 20/10/2012 00:37

Gillian. I am early 40s.

slightlytipsy · 20/10/2012 00:53

Alitheia. It's a Greek name (she's from Corfu).
