Daenerys. Unusual but pretty or just weird?

This is the name of a character in tv programme/book Game of Thrones. She is a strong beautiful woman and I love the name but I am not sure whether it is just too weird. Please can I get your opinions?

Worse than weird

Eliza9919 · 14/05/2019 22:16

How do you pronounce it? I haven't seen GoT.

I really wouldn't name a baby after a character in a book that hasn't had the ending written to it yet - who knows, by the end of the series Daenerys might end up a hideous psychopath who shags horses.

Very prophetic comment from 7 years ago! One more episode to fit in the horse shagging part Wink

I feel like there's a middle ground between Daenerys (fictional, weird, unspellable) and Grace (super-common and a bit boring).

bridgetreilly · 15/05/2019 09:36

Oh. ZOMBIE THREAD.

And Arya has obligingly provided one...

That's all it is. It's made up for the show, which is currently very popular. It will date horribly and say "my parents couldn't think of a name for me so chose something from the biggest tv show of the time". It's like calling your child Chewbacca or Skywalker.

If you want a name to signify a strong, independent woman then stick to the classics like Victoria, Elizabeth, Katherine. Not a made up name from a porn and dragons show.

I think it's a really weird name, can't quite work out how to pronounce it.

Also I've never seen GOT so it means totally nothing to me

tillytoodles1 · 16/05/2019 18:28

I know a baby called Arya, I think it's awful. Daenerys , Khaleesi and Sansa are even worse.

IceCreamSoda99 · 16/05/2019 18:43

What's wrong with Sansa Confused? It's on my list if we have DD (as long as she doesn't go crazy in the last episode! Grin ) DH not keen though, but I think it's beautiful!

CodenameVillanelle · 16/05/2019 21:20

Naming your child over a game of thrones character is naff as fuck.
I met a toddler Sansa the other day, but her mum pronounced the second S as a hard S so it was more like Sanza. Awful.

tillytoodles1 · 16/05/2019 22:58

IceCream soda it's the name of a character in a series that's going to finish in a few day, it's a made up name and it's awful. Your child will hate you.

PutThatDown10 · 17/05/2019 21:13

Well... Daenerys probably isn't the best choice, especially if it's just based on just that character. It's not a horrible sounding name though, not something I'd personally choose but we all have different tastes.

The thing is, we could associate loads of things with different names, even very popular names can have a negative association with characters in films, books, media etc doesn't mean that the name itself is bad.

I will say Arya is a beautiful name, it's origins are actually Persian I believe and it's popular in India apparently. There's also other characters with the name so it's not just Game of Thrones associations... Eragon or something like that there's a woman with the name.

This is absolute gold. Grin

Are you GRR Martin?

Entertaining thread to reread seven years on.

Prizes go to everyone who said “don’t do it, there’s too much risk that something horrible will happen to her or she’ll turn out evil” and to Trills for saying that we’ll still be waiting for the next book by the time the baby starts school and HBO would have to start making uptheir own plots.

Dunce’s cap to Seeker for her confident prediction that GOT was an obscure flash in the pan that everyone would have forgotten about in a coupe of years.

Honeyroar · 17/05/2019 23:54

Pronounced Dan er is. I’ve been watching Game of Thrones for years and still can’t remember how to spell it! I just write Dani.

FishCanFly · 18/05/2019 14:25

go for it. the show will be forgotten soon enough

hannonle · 19/05/2019 21:57

I know of a teenage boy called Anakin (sp?). Everyone I've told about it thinks it's ridiculous and has had a chuckle over it. Poor kid.
