Daenerys. Unusual but pretty or just weird?

This is the name of a character in tv programme/book Game of Thrones. She is a strong beautiful woman and I love the name but I am not sure whether it is just too weird. Please can I get your opinions?

She has really poor judgement when it comes to men after her husband died.

I'd not name a child this, she'll probably cark it in the next book - he likes to kill off people he gets you to like.

I was a teenager at the time.

Sensible now, he's Henry!

Should have been pippin Grin

Good point expat, if there are new books to come out you can't be sure what will happen!

expatinscotland · 26/09/2012 23:47

There's another one to come out. He's working on it now.

Daenerys Targaryen is an anagram of Any Garter Ye Snared, married.

HarlettOScara · 27/09/2012 03:53

The little Arya I met was only a baby so no opinion on her name yet. However, it seems to be generally well received.

nooka · 27/09/2012 04:28

No! Fantasy writers love their weird names, but I really don't think that children do. No one will know how to pronounce or say the name, and they will either think you made it up or are an OTT George R R Martin fan.

Plus knowing him she might well go insane or come to a very nasty end. Arya is my favourite Song of Ice and Fire character, but I'd not use it as a name except for perhaps a pet.

Kelerina · 27/09/2012 09:13

I really like it actually but my problem would be that it would be shortened to Dany which I really don't like! (for a girl)

ShowOfHands · 27/09/2012 09:31

DH wanted to name our dc after somebody out of Wheel Of Time or one of the postapocalyptic gun sharks in 2000AD. I politely explained that no, we were not calling our son Sinister, nor our daughter Aviendha.

DS is instead named after a Ninja Turtle. DD was slightly more lucky and got the name of my favourite childhood book.

Poor children.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2012 09:34

No way, Tyrion rocks! He's the best!

ReindeersGoldenBollocks · 27/09/2012 09:35

I wouldn't just because the name is so complex to say spell. Having had an awkward name I'm not a fan of them!

I love Arya though, it's on our short list if we have a third. I woud be worried about the GoT connotations but it's such a lovely name.

ReindeersGoldenBollocks · 27/09/2012 09:35

That should read say/spell.

ShowOfHands · 27/09/2012 09:45

I LOVE Tyrion!

Ephiny · 27/09/2012 09:51

I think it's too much of a mouthful/difficult to spell, even in the books it's shortened to Dany most of the time!

Arya somewhat better...but I'd wait to see how the books turn out. She's a great character, but her storyline takes a very dark turn in later books and I can't see how there's going to be a good ending for her.

HarlettOScara · 27/09/2012 09:51

If DD had been a boy, I wanted to call her Tyrion. DP (who is a huge fan of George RR Martin...I only got into GoT through the TV series) gave me the Hmm face.

HiHowAreYou · 27/09/2012 10:21

It's awful!

Cezella · 27/09/2012 10:23

Arya Rose? That's beautiful I think! x

Badgerina · 27/09/2012 23:00

But Grace Rose is SO BORING. Go with Danearys. Or however you spell it Grin

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 28/09/2012 00:29

Arya has a meaning in Sanskrit- it's not a George RR Martin original. And Italian if you spell it Aria of course

OTheHugeManatee · 28/09/2012 00:42

I knew an Eowyn at school. She was forever marked as someone whose parents really loved The Lord Of The Rings Hmm

Think this might be a bit like that, sorry.

PeshwariNaan · 28/09/2012 05:35

Dany is a character who gets more and more pathetic with each new GoT installment. Don't do it!!!

PeshwariNaan · 28/09/2012 05:36

Arya's good though - a great, strong character and a nice name!

evilgiraffe · 28/09/2012 11:41

I love the character, but wouldn't call a child this name. How about Sansa? I know she's a bit wet, but it's a lovely name.

misscomanche · 28/09/2012 12:34

I love it. And I haven't seen/read GoT, just thought it was a pretty name and wondered if it was Welsh!

seeker · 28/09/2012 12:40

Are you all absolutley sure you want to name your baby after a character in a series of fashionable books\TV programmes that will be forgotten about in a couple of years?
