Daenerys. Unusual but pretty or just weird?

This is the name of a character in tv programme/book Game of Thrones. She is a strong beautiful woman and I love the name but I am not sure whether it is just too weird. Please can I get your opinions?

Why not seeker. I'm named after an obscure song nobody sings anymore.

seeker · 28/09/2012 12:45

I just think I would like to be able to tell my child more about their name than "oh, she was a character on the telly".

Ephiny · 28/09/2012 12:48

Forgotten about in a couple of years?! Shock Angry

We'll probably still be waiting for the next book by the time OP's daughter is in school :)

But personally, no, I wouldn't name my child after a fantasy character (though I would secretly like to use Kitiara or Elora)

Ephiny · 28/09/2012 12:49

And I was named after a Dr Who assistant Hmm. I got over it!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/09/2012 12:50

Hmm - but you would have to use 'storm born' as her middle name and marry her off to her brother as is the family tradition - Arya - much better. Wink

I agree.

I do worry what will happen when all of the existing books have been made into TV but the next book is not written.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/09/2012 12:51

I have used singers and song titles for my daughters names and ds is named after a victorian playwright/ novellist

seeker · 28/09/2012 12:55

But presumably not a name made up specifically for the playwright/novelist?

Ephiny · 28/09/2012 13:08

Trills I was hoping the relentless advance of the TV series might hurry him up to write a bit faster...

But then GRRM is not our bitch. Or HBO's, presumably.

NimChimpsky · 28/09/2012 13:24

I loved Kitiara.

ItMustBeSaturday · 28/09/2012 13:29

I prefer it to Khaleesi and actually like the short 'Dany' but like Arya even more. I know a little Arwen. It suits her.

Trills · 28/09/2012 13:36

GRRM is nobody's bitch. Sadly.

BrittaPerry · 28/09/2012 13:36

I want loads of cats named after got charecters :-)

I think it is a very pretty name, but maybe as a middle name?

Grace Rose ok, but both too popukar for my liking.

Arya Daenerys?

TheMightyMojoceratops · 28/09/2012 13:39

If I met a girl called Arya I would think of "Aryan" and suspect the parents of having unpleasant views. Sorry.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/09/2012 13:40

Yes Seeker my children's names are not fictional creations - I suppose every name has been 'created' made-up I do prefer a longer history behind the names I choose. Tried and tested. Family names are good to create/ maintain links with earlier generations but I am wandering OT here - sorry.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/09/2012 13:44

If I heard the name 'Arya' - it would be pronounced 'aria' and so make me think of opera and there is a character in US teen melodrama pretty little liars called Aria

amandine07 · 30/09/2012 18:17

Not heard of tho name before- seems utterly bizarre to me, as if it's an anagram or something. Sorry, I don't really have anything helpful to add!

Uppercut · 30/09/2012 18:59

Reminds me of a woman I once knew who named her son Frodo.

She more or less single-handedly convinced me that giving children names of popular fanatasy fiction characters should be a criminal offence.

attheendoftheday · 30/09/2012 22:39

I love GoT but I don't like Daenerys, sorry.

GoldenLlama · 30/09/2012 22:46

I've seen this thread title in active convos a couple of times and both times I have skimread the title as Deanerys so you might get some misspellings/ mispronunciations.

When I read it as Deanerys I also assumed it was an independent schools choice thread. Blush

sashh · 01/10/2012 04:53

I know someone who was named after a character in Blake's Seven.

Her children also share names with characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter.

seeker · 01/10/2012 10:23

[grin]@golden lama!

WhatWouldVegansDo · 01/10/2012 18:57

seeker, I was named after one of the geese in The Aristocats! I think that's rather cute! :)

SilkStalkings · 01/10/2012 21:48

Daenerys looks a bit like a skin complaint to me, sorry.

seeker · 02/10/2012 10:56

But those names were used for centuries before the Aristocats! My dd is named, among other people, after a character my dp fancied in a television series- but it's a name that stands, as yours does, before and after the programme.
