Daenerys. Unusual but pretty or just weird?

This is the name of a character in tv programme/book Game of Thrones. She is a strong beautiful woman and I love the name but I am not sure whether it is just too weird. Please can I get your opinions?

No, really ugly name that sounds like something you treat head lice with.

But I do like the sentiment of giving your daughter a strong name :)

Lakota · 02/10/2012 12:43

Can you not go with Nerys, which is a recognised name? Or use it as a middle name? My DS2 has an unusual middle name but a 'normal' first name.

WhatWouldVegansDo · 02/10/2012 19:44

Ooh, seeker, go on, tell me which one you prefer! :) I shan't be offended. Promise!

True, my name is ancient, but names had to start somewhere. In 3012 there may be lots of Daeneryses about, and it will be an old name then!

The Stark's have lovely names for their daughters - Arya and Sansa are just very pretty so if you really want to pay the ultimate homage to RR Martin, pick one of these.

So many amazing names to choose from in GofT, but I agree Daenerys does get annoying later on.

Hot Pie features quite heavily in the second book - is that a possibility ? Wink

Asuigeneris1 · 27/05/2013 04:19

The name is fine, don't worry about what others think...it's your child, and they will like it more likely than not.

...most with unusual names tend to appreciate them more and more as they get older.

You could also try some variation...like "Phoenicys" (Phoenix) or "Caelestys" (Celestial).

noxius · 27/05/2013 12:01

It's a bit naff, after those rather trashy films/books.

Dontbugmemalone · 27/05/2013 12:12

No, it's not a nice name and it's far too awkward to say/spell.

burberryqueen · 27/05/2013 12:16

sorry it is horrid, it sounds like an icelolly by Nestle

amandine07 · 27/05/2013 12:50

Personally, for me it's too obscure, difficult to pronounce & spell.

However, it's your baby and ultimately the decision of you & OH!

George R R Martin's website has a few babies/kids named after characters. I like it but personally wouldn't use it.

littleomar · 27/05/2013 14:45

I'd wait until he's finished the series at least to see what happens to her. He does like to kill characters horribly.

Scruffey · 27/05/2013 14:51

I like G o T and she's a good character. The name works in G o T.

Not for a baby IMO. I would use something much more practical and easier for someone to live with.

I find it embarrassing when asking someone their name and the reply comes back as something I cannot hear/make out or pronounce/recognise and will talk to someone with a plain name in preference to avoid getting the complicated one wrong. Some people don't find it remotely and will say "what?" 4 times when presented with the difficult name. Others will modify it to a name they recognise. My mil couldn't fathom the name of bil's last GF and called her a name that was much more common and sounded roughly like her name!!! She wasn't being mean, she just didn't get it.

snickersnacker · 27/05/2013 19:06

OP, have you read the books? Daenerys is a strong character but the whole series contains a lot of shagging and frequent use of the word 'cunt'. Not a problem in and of itself but consider the time when it gets around her school that she's named after someone in a mucky book...!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 27/05/2013 19:16

If it's pronounced da ner ris then I like it, if its Denise then I don't!

It would take me a while to learn how to spell it and I imagine most will get it wrong!
Ayra is a nice name, as are grace and rose Smile

CaptainJamesTKirk · 27/05/2013 19:45

Old thread people!

I expect Baby Daenerys has been born by now!

Turniptwirl · 28/05/2013 21:05

Beautiful name for a fantasy character, not sure a little
Girl could pull it off

JazzAnnNonMouse · 29/05/2013 08:03

Oh old thread! I wonder what name they chose in the end?

BlueBowTie · 29/05/2013 21:35

People will always bring it back to game of thrones I think and remember the last two books are yet to come and who knows what she'll do in those!

rockybalboa · 30/05/2013 09:48

I know an Arya but I think Daenerys might be a step too far plus she'll spend her entire life having to spell it out to people.

BoundandRebound · 30/05/2013 09:53

There are going to be millions of game of thrones named babies

So don't do it if you want to be unusual

quertas · 30/05/2013 10:12

I know this is a zombie thread- appropriate for Game of Thrones Grin- but has anyone read this? I suppose it brings together the GoT and odd and inappropriate use of a K trends ...

naughtsapproach · 11/09/2013 01:28

I LOVE the name Daenerys. I don't understand how people can say it's hard to spell....because it has an a followed by an e? Oh please. And hard to pronounce? Not really. And how is it too long? My name is Samantha and Daenerys has the same amount of letters as well as syllables.

valentin · 11/04/2014 17:12

But honestly isn't most names we use and see as normal today from books, movies, etc etc. I say if you like it, name your child whatever the hell you like. I doubt she'll be picked on or regret her name in the long run. If anything, she'll come to enjoy it since she'll be one of the very few with that name while the other children with parents who didn't have the courage to name their own child something unique is stuck being the janes of the world. So yeah, do it.

Butchyrestingface · 14/05/2019 18:40

Given recent events, I hope to Christ you didn’t name your baby ‘Daenerys’, OP!
