What do you think of the name Lushe as my baby daughter's name?

What do you think of the name Lushe (silent e) as my baby daughter's name? Plenty of people have the surname Lush so why not have it as a first name? I already have a daughter called Harlowe which caused uproar with the family but has been received well in nursery but I need something just as unusual for my new arrival due in January. This is my first post so please be nice to me...

Is it just pronounced Lush? If so then I wouldnt use it, its a fairly well known word meaning a drunk (around here anyway!)

A lush is a drunk - if you must have an unusual name don't pick one that means something bad to most people!

From the dictionary:

lush
noun

  1. drunkard; alcoholic; sot.
  2. intoxicating liquor.

  1. to drink liquor.

  1. to drink (liquor).

Not a good choice IMO!

The "e" on the end would make me pronounce it "Loosh" not Lush. Once I'd been told it was pronounced "Lush" I'd wonder why a baby had a name that usually refers to drunks.

However, if you want to use it, why add the extra 'e'?

Thank you for your honesty everyone. According to the dictionary Lush is from the adjective 'Luxurious' and that is how I have always known it to mean lovely or Luxury. Where are you all from? Not sure whether this is just a uk site or world wide site? There is a well known shop called Lush in my town and why would they call it that if it meant piss head or drunkard?

Lux is a lovely name, I would consider it but hubby dismissed it straight away so may need some persuasion... thank you hugefurry.

I like unusual names as I come from a family with unusal names i.e my brother's names are Jansen, Jaeren and nobody has ever said a bad word about those names and they are both very popular. Just out of interest what do you think about their names?

Have it as a middle name and have Gert as the first name. Wink

I came across a little girl called Lux at a m&t group recently. Not my cup of tea at all.

here in Wales, everything is 'lush' , it seems the teenagers are using that dictionary definition, but for everything from ice cream to good weather.
'lush' as a female alcoholic is also well known,possibly from the USA.
I really wouldn't call a girl this.
how about 'Dagenham' or 'Romford' to go with Harlowe?

Truly? I try not to be too rude on here but it's an awful idea.

And yes, regardless of what you have or haven't heard of, "lush" is indeed an oldfashioned term for a female drunkard.

Lux = soap, or degrees of light.

Nothing wrong with your brothers' names, btw.

If you want a name like it but in the "standard but different" name bracket, then try Lucia.

Sorry, in my.honest opinion, lush is a ridiculous name. There are lots of lovely unusual names.

(Also agree that with an e on the end it would sound as if she was called 'loosh').

Scout, Spike and now Lush. Baby Names has some "interesting" people on today.

It's a slang word, either meaning 'delicious' or meaning a drunk. It's usually said with a sneer on the face.

Either way it is really not a good name - in a totally different league to Jansen and Jaeren.
