Beryl

Can I use Beryl if I already have a Pearl?
Dh and I agree on 4 girls names. I also have two more that I am trying to get him to agree to.
Beryl is my favourite from the 4 we agree on, but we have a dd Pearl already.

She is nearly 6, so at school. Baby and dd will not be at toddler group together or anything like that.

What do you think?

Ursuala I hope you are really not an Ursual in real life? If so I'm really sorry! Blush

Thanks for thumbs up!

I'm trying to imagine people's reactions if someone turned-up at a coffee morning with a Baby Beryl....

Admittedly, I'm not sure all of them would manage to keep a straight face.

UrsulaBuffay · 23/05/2011 15:49

Haha, no I'm not :)

Borisneedsahaircut · 23/05/2011 16:02

pHEW! :)

5inthebed · 23/05/2011 16:02

Beryl? really? Please don't call your child that.

I like the name Jane, threw that in the pile when my Dsis had her daughter last year but she didn't like it.

I always thought Agnes was a nice old lady name.

Out of interest, what boys names have you chosen?

I know a cool kid called Agnes or Agi.
I think Edith is quite cool now Edith Bowman has blazed a trail Wink

megapixels · 23/05/2011 16:51

Oh no no no. I thought Beryl was one of those out-of-the-question names? Don't do it!

bananamom · 23/05/2011 17:16

Do not call your child Beryl, she will hate you for it. Instead of indulging yourself with names consider the welfare of the child.

This ^^

Stop being so selfish and 'cool'.

deste · 23/05/2011 17:16

Where has the op gone?.

kimlek · 23/05/2011 17:23

Beryl wouldn't be my choice but it goes fine with Pearl. I hadn't even realised that Beryl was a gem!! And I bet lots of people won't connect the two names & if they do so what??

evamummy · 23/05/2011 17:27

It's not THAT bad imo. I think people are being a bit too harsh.

ellangirl · 23/05/2011 17:27

The OP is probably hiding from the insults being thrown around on here!

kimlek · 23/05/2011 17:28

I've got a friend who called her son Stan seven years ago and another who called her two sons Frankie & Ned also seven years ago. At the time I thought I thought they were pretty horrid. But now, they're fab names and so suit them!! Just wish my hubbie had allowed me to be a bit more unconventional with my kids names!

Kendodd · 23/05/2011 17:44

If you like it so much OP why don't you change your name to Beryl?

FattyAcid · 23/05/2011 17:57

I like Beryl and Pearl - and its really nice to have an unusual name ( I have one)

DontHassleTheBOF · 23/05/2011 17:57

Dean.

Borisneedsahaircut · 23/05/2011 17:58

'Other names dh likes are Susan, Mildred and Ursula.
I am trying to get him to agree to Priscilla or Thisbe.' - OP are you serious on Mildred? How old is your DP? I'm sorry but I am starting to think its a joke?!

UrsulaBuffay · 23/05/2011 18:03

Some of these posts are a bit harsh, tummytickler isn't trolling making things up.

I also remember a few years ago a friend called her son Bertie & now it's 'all the rage', lol. So think on!

WhoAreWe · 23/05/2011 19:14

I suppose, when you're thinking about names, you have to ask yourself whether you would actually be happy with the name. Would YOU like to be called Beryl? If the answer's yes then you're mad go for it Grin

tunbridgewellsmum · 23/05/2011 19:18

My MIL is called Beryl and hates it (and she's an old lady).. she calls herself Bez.. which I think is worse. I insist the kids call her 'Grandma Beryl' anyway Grin

Mildred might be ok if you actually call her Millie x

WorzselMaamage · 23/05/2011 19:18

Of course it's a joke Boris.. No-one has such horrid taste in RL.

excellentadventure · 23/05/2011 19:19

Returning to the actual question.

I would have said that Beryl and Pearl made a good pair, until someone pointed out that they sound almost the same when spoken in certain regional accents.

This raises an interesting point. A number of posters have run down 'Beryl' while saying that they like 'Pearl'. Would those posters still like 'Pearl' when it was spoken in a Scottish accent? Or would it then be as "ugly" or "hideous" as 'Beryl'?
