Beryl

Can I use Beryl if I already have a Pearl?
Dh and I agree on 4 girls names. I also have two more that I am trying to get him to agree to.
Beryl is my favourite from the 4 we agree on, but we have a dd Pearl already.

She is nearly 6, so at school. Baby and dd will not be at toddler group together or anything like that.

What do you think?

Oh I like Beryl. I think it's got a certain retro glamour. Am also a big Beryl Bainbridge admirer, which has prob swayed me.

I don't really think it goes with Pearl but then, I also don't think they need to "go" -- they will not live their lives alongside one another, presumably.

ManicAnnie · 21/05/2011 16:30

Beryl was never a nice name, though, was it? Honestly?

freesias · 21/05/2011 16:52

priscilla is lovely sadly couldn't get dh to agree though

sorry not keen on beryl and not with pearl sound too similar for my liking

MelinaM · 21/05/2011 17:32

Pearl is beautiful, Beryl is not ..sorry!

chrisonabike · 21/05/2011 17:34

As a duo they'll be Burl and Peril not Pearl and Beryl. And Beryl is a Dinner Ladies name.

mamalovesmojitos · 21/05/2011 17:37

Beryl the Peril. Think twice before you name her. Sorry! Blush. I don't wish to hurt your feelings but that name will never be nice.

exoticfruits · 21/05/2011 17:44

Hope that she is well behaved!!

spidookly · 21/05/2011 17:52

Awful, awful name. Hideous.

Choose Susan or Ursula.

Thank God your girls have your DH to stick up for them.

Although how he let Beryl through is beyond me.

Janoschi · 21/05/2011 18:32

No-one in her generation will have a clue about Beryl the Peril. Berry is a cute nickname for her....

Meglet · 21/05/2011 18:34

Yes, it's fab Smile. And Berry is a lovely nn.

amberleaf · 21/05/2011 18:36

Susan, Mildred and Beryl??

Surely this is a windup?

exoticfruits · 21/05/2011 19:40

If she is badly behaved all the adults will think, even if they don't say it, 'here comes Beryl the Peril'. If she is going to be Berry I bet DCs will add to it.

FairyArmadillo · 21/05/2011 19:48

If you try saying it and forget the old lady associations Beryl sounds nice. In my opinion it sounds nicer than Mildred.

ellangirl · 21/05/2011 19:55

Ursula is a great name- Sula is a good nn IMO (prounced soo-la).

usualsuspect · 21/05/2011 19:57

Just no

BatFlattery · 21/05/2011 20:05

Pearl is a lovely name, but Beryl is just awful, sorry!

gapants · 21/05/2011 20:11

together they sounds silly, and like a mistake, Beryl and Pearl.
Also I think that most people think Pearl is quite a pretty name, where as Beryl is more joke name I think, and if I were to visualise a female Beryl she is very unattractive. Sorry. Each to their own.

How are you pronouncing Thisbe? This- be or Tis- be? Or something else?

tummytickler · 21/05/2011 20:17

Thisbe is pronounced Thiz-bee.

Thanks for all the opinions!
I will always think Beryl is beautiful I am afraid Grin I really love it. I just worry about two gemstones together!

As I said - hopefully after hours of gruelling labour, dh will just let me call her (if it is a her) Thisbe or Priscilla!

He has suggested Jane - which I have added to the list, as it is rather nice I think.

He being dh, obviously!

gapants · 21/05/2011 20:25

Jane is on my list too!

What about Nell?

Beryl...does not make me think of beautiful gemstones!

Thisbe, I like it. Although kids will say Frisbee, but that is hardly the worst.

valiumbandwitch · 21/05/2011 20:36

I think Beryl is a beautiful sound. People just aren't ready for it yet but give it five years and they will be. Why can you not use Beryl with Pearl Confused

I do prefer Meryl to Beryl but that's because I completely love Meryl. For me, Beryl is not such a huge leap from Belle, I don't understand why people are saying it's 'hideous'.

valiumbandwitch · 21/05/2011 20:38

ps, nn Berry is lovely!

Susan and Jane are lovely but not old lady enough. There are Susans and Janes in their forties. You need names of people who are in their 70s or 80s I think.

Bluebell123 · 21/05/2011 20:39

My mother was at school with twins called Pearl and Crystal Diamond. :-). Really sorry but just hate the name Beryl.

PedigreeChump · 21/05/2011 20:41

I don't have any particular opinion on Beryl as a name, but come on there has to be other people here who think they are exactly the same name with a different letter to start?

Maybe it's just my accent (Scottish) but Pearl is said "Per-ril" and Beryl is said Ber-ril"

Even with Pearl said "Perl" they still sound almost identical.
