Beryl

Can I use Beryl if I already have a Pearl?
Dh and I agree on 4 girls names. I also have two more that I am trying to get him to agree to.
Beryl is my favourite from the 4 we agree on, but we have a dd Pearl already.

She is nearly 6, so at school. Baby and dd will not be at toddler group together or anything like that.

What do you think?

I started off reading this thread with the same attitude about Beryl as most of the others, however I'm starting to get used to the name now. I've never known a Beryl either and for me that gives the name a huge plus point. I am SO sick of names in the top 20-or-so that frankly even names I don't like but are less usual are better.

Having said that, I don't think Beryl and Pearl go nicely together.
I fear Mildred would become yet another Milly. Thisbe is lovely, but I wouldn't be thrilled with Priscilla being shortened to Prissy or Cilla. Shame your DH has vetoed Tabitha, it's lovely.

MerryMarigold · 23/05/2011 13:54

Priscilla is a beautiful name. And Susan is nice. Ursula is good.

How about Maureen instead of Beryl Hmm?

lucysnowe · 23/05/2011 13:54

I like it, and am surprised by the poster who thinks Mildred is a bad name! There are about a billion Millies our there.

tammy234 · 23/05/2011 13:54

I too am surprised at the negative reactions. Shouldn't we be encouraging more name diversity - it is not that the OP wants to name her daugher poopoohead or Chanel. Beryl is a perfectly normal girls name, it just isn't 'trendy' at the moment. Nothing wrong with that imo. Certainly more interesting than another Ellie, Ella or Tilly (yawn...)

tammy234 · 23/05/2011 13:55

Mildred reminds me of mildew, thats why I'm not keen personally. And Millie is very very overused and dull imo.

stickylittlefingers · 23/05/2011 13:59

go with what you like, for heavens sake! You're doing well to have so many names you and DH agree on - we never managed that, which meant the one we agreed on got used. Everyone else can go hang. Which group, in your case, includes me!

amberleaf · 23/05/2011 14:03

I prefer Poopoohead

UrsulaBuffay · 23/05/2011 14:03

Being Ursula on MN has made me really admire the name. Beryl is really not nice.

UrsulaBuffay · 23/05/2011 14:11

Sorry, have just read further and realised you didn't want opinions of the name so much.

How about Mabel? It is my name crush.

I don't see why Thisbe isn't as useable as my DDs name Phoebe, or eg Xanthe, just not as popularised yet.

Pasiphae · 23/05/2011 14:12

Pearl with Beryl is OK. I just don't think it is as pretty.
While Pearl seem all elegant and poetic, Beryl feels old lady and dull next to it. I would raise the stake higher for this one.
Thisbe, Priscilla or Ursula would work better, because they are as shiny and chic as Pearl.

herogirl · 23/05/2011 14:29

I had an aunt named Beryl and she hated it with a passion. Grandfather registered the birth and wrote down the wrong name, grandmother innocent! No middle name either! Was a standing joke in the (large family). It is not forward thinking, it is just silly, she will be teased at school and most likely will change it herself.

As someone else said, come to your senses! I am all for individualism but saddling a child with such an awful name just to be different is not clever. Children like being anonymous viz a viz names, not to be different. You are not going to school with the name, she is!

It seems most people think they are not at all nice names at all, fine if you like them, but do keep in mind that your DD will have to go round with a name most people don't like. I wouldn't do that if I were you.

LemonLime · 23/05/2011 14:48

Beryl is a lovely name! I've always thought so. Use it! It has a gorgeous sound to it, especially when said lightly with a lilt.
It goes beautifully with Pearl. The connotations that go with the name won't be there for your daughter's generation.

tammy234 · 23/05/2011 14:52

"Not Miriam! I have a very ex friend called that!"

Because you happen to have an ex friend called a name nobody else can choose it to name their child Hmm..?

ellangirl · 23/05/2011 14:59

There are some very rude people on this thread! She's hardly proposing calling her child Chlamydia or Ima Hogg now is she??

I like Beryl, but then I don't know any 'granny's' named Beryl, so have no 'associations'. Agree with previous poster that our children's generations won't have any of these connotations. I think the OP is just ahead of the curve Smile.

hellokitty123 · 23/05/2011 15:13

Oh, and I love the name Raffaela, zukiecat.

Borisneedsahaircut · 23/05/2011 15:22

I'm not keen on either of them tbh but only because they remind me of old women or Enid Blyton. They might be in fashion gain by the time they are teenagers!

Borisneedsahaircut · 23/05/2011 15:25

U missed out Gertrude.
Ursula is horrid, sorry! :(
I really like traditional names too and susanna is lovely. My own name is Martha but I dont think its as bad as some of those above.

UrsulaBuffay · 23/05/2011 15:27

Martha is such a gorgeous name, I am tres Envy

I think Susie is cute nice

greypubes · 23/05/2011 15:29

If my mum had called me Beryl I would have slapped her in the mouth. Poor kid.

greypubes · 23/05/2011 15:31

your grandad probably looked around the room for ideas before seeing the pen he was using.

higgle · 23/05/2011 15:39

Do not call your child Beryl, she will hate you for it. Instead of indulging yourself with names consider the welfare of the child.
