Beryl

Can I use Beryl if I already have a Pearl?
Dh and I agree on 4 girls names. I also have two more that I am trying to get him to agree to.
Beryl is my favourite from the 4 we agree on, but we have a dd Pearl already.

She is nearly 6, so at school. Baby and dd will not be at toddler group together or anything like that.

What do you think?

I like Ursula, my first thought about Mildred - the crocodile from Bewilderwood. And Pricilla, Queen of the Dessert - its a bus.
Beryl is an old lady.

My DD is called Anna, seems quite popular again. A while ago we stayed in an old hotel in Germany. There were old photos of the previous owners dating back to about 1890 on the walls, they all were big middle aged frowning women in black dresses - and half of them were called Anna!

cgpmummy · 23/05/2011 20:34

I don't think that I would be worried that they are on the same theme or that they may be ahead (or behind!) of their time, it's the fact that they rhyme for me! Sounds silly when you say it, I'm all for unusual names my daughter is called Cameron. But I do draw the line at silliness!!

tummytickler · 23/05/2011 20:37

Hello!
I am here - not gone away, I have just had a busy day.
Astonished this is discussion of the day! In 6 years on Mumsnet, I have never had a discussion of the day before.
I don't quite know what to say - I still do not see what is wrong with Beryl or Mildred. Beryl is not much different to Belle surely.
I would love to be called Beryl myself, I think it is beautiful and elegant. So there Grin
I don't really know what else to say - You can all hate the names all you want, but me and dh love them.
Names for a ds are Hershel or Mortimer. We only like those. And I am not asking for opinions on them.

Oh - and we are far from cool, so that is not really a consideration for whoever it was that was banging on about that.

ellangirl · 23/05/2011 20:44

I know you don't want opinions, but I love your boys choices esp. Mortimer. At the end of the say it's your baby! I know someone who just called their baby the most unusual name I have ever heard, but already he's grown into it- that's who he is, and that's that! It will be the same with your baby.

mathanxiety · 23/05/2011 20:48

I really like Hershel.

mamaduckbone · 23/05/2011 20:55

My mum is called Beryl and has always absolutely loathed it, so I can't possibly comment on whether it is a nice name or not, so engrained in me is the fact that it's not. I think I'll show her this thread though - she'll be horrified! Grin I don't see a problem with it in combination with Pearl though, if you do decide to go for it. Ursula is my fave from your list. I taught a Millicent (nicer than Mildred I think but similar) and she was Millie to everyone.

naturalbaby · 23/05/2011 21:01

Oooo am liking Mortimer!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 23/05/2011 21:05

Not Millicent, Melisende.

MeantToStopAtTwo · 23/05/2011 21:13

I think you should go for Norman if a boy.

I have to say, I did think that this comment on your previous Beryl thread was a very valid one:

'The pronunciation is similar to barrel which would be unfortunate if the child were to be well-built.'

LetThereBeRock · 23/05/2011 21:21

Beryl is very different to Belle. I'm not terribly fond of Belle actually, but it's a considerably more attractive name than Beryl,Mildred or Getrude which are amongst the most hideous sounding names I can think of.

A definite no to Hershel, but I like Mortimer.

shoobidoo · 23/05/2011 21:28

Why are people so bossy on this thread ("a definite not to Hershel"). It is fine to express our opinions (although the OP has specifically asked that we don't comment on her boys names Hershel and Mortimer), but I think a lot of people on here are a little harsh.

And I agree with previous poster that only a few years ago names like Bertie, Wilfred or Clementine were laughed at, whereas they are now becoming quite fashionable again.

mumtojohn · 23/05/2011 21:46

Completely agree with Janoschi. Our generation's approval and disapproval of names is based on stuff like TV programmes, what old people we might have laughed at when we were kids were called, characters from books etc etc. All stuff that will mean diddly to the next generation. I loved 'Dorian' as a boy's name but everyone over 30 just thinks of Birds Of Feather. As if a mediocre TV sitcom that doesn't even get repeated 20 years later will have any resonance to our children's generation. I chickened out, btw, and went for it as a middle name but there is a twinge of regret.

The only relevant thing here is the gemstone thing (and indeed, the only question you actually were really asking), which I think is fine. I would draw the line at, say, Scarlett and Violet, as they are well known as colours but I don't think the same can be said of Beryl.

Can I just say though, GwendolineMaryLacey, that your name on here is the best EVER. I wondered why I recognised it and then I remembered....!

Jonnyfan · 23/05/2011 22:28

Ruby is a maid's name
Beryl is an ugly, hideous name
So is Eunice

BearBehavingBadly · 23/05/2011 22:42

Pearl & Beryl do sound very similar.
Other types of beryl (gemstone) are emerald, aquamarine, morganite & topaz.
So as other posters have mentioned what about Emerald?
Or Marine/Marina,
Morgan
or
Topaz.

If you like gemstones or mineral names that are more unusual then how about Sapphire
Or Coral/Coralie,
Amethyst,
Citrine,
Silvie/Silvia,

But if you still like Beryl & the meaning behind then how about one of its' variants such as Berry/Berrie (previously mentioned) or Beryn?

evilgiraffe · 23/05/2011 23:14

Hershel? Mortimer? You've already got Pearl, how could you possibly pass up the opportunity to have Dean as well?

Anyone else agree? Everyone for "Pearl and Dean", say aye!

(I'm honestly not taking the piss, Pearl and Dean would be WICKED and way more cool than any other possible choice of name.)

snice · 23/05/2011 23:19

Cora is a very sweet 'old lady' name and would go well with Pearl

excellentadventure · 23/05/2011 23:29

What, you mean like the, er, famous Cora Pearl? Hmmmmm.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cora_Pearl

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 23/05/2011 23:46

Just like my friend who called her daughters Sophia and Lauren, at least she wasn't a 'courtesan.'

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 23/05/2011 23:49

And Beryn is a boy's name. In fact the miller in Chaucer's very rude Miller's Tale was Beryn, wasn't he?

BearBehavingBadly · 24/05/2011 00:13

Ah yes The Tale of Beryn.

Was looking on Babynames site that suggested variants of Beryl. Might have been an american one. Could be a unisex name now like Haley/Finlay etc.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 24/05/2011 00:17

Beryn sounds nicer than Beryl, though. I just can't warm to the name. I remember being a bit Hmm about Ruby, but I never had the same instant dislike.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 24/05/2011 00:22

Just googled it, and the Miller was Robyn not Beryn, oops. I always think of 'yn' names being male from Welsh white, 'wyn' for boys and 'wen' for girls.
