The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped - Part 2

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/08/2023 00:38

Hi everyone, Aussie Mumsnetter here. As some have requested a new thread be started by an Aussie I decided to do it.

I am still gripped by this case and like many, I am awaiting updates of new information.

Will a matching donor for a liver for Ian be found soon? I hope he makes a full recovery.

Will he be able to shed new light on the lunch they all shared?

And of course is she guilty of deliberately poisoning them or was it an innocent mistake?

I didn't realise you'd done this and posted another one!

I'll ask MN to delete mine. Thanks for your forward-thinking :)

Sorry @Dustyblue I should’ve messaged you. I did do a search first but couldn’t find a new thread by you. I just wanted to make sure that there was a link on the first one for everyone before it got too full to post a link.

Thank you, OP!
I will just follow what has been happening...

IveHadItUpToHere · 20/08/2023 12:55

Thanks for the new thread OP. A lot of the news in the UK atm is about the Lucy Letby case so everything else has been pushed down the news agenda. The Letby case is another one I can't fathom. Like this one, I keep feeling I must be missing something.
When I think of Ian's recovery, I just keep remembering the writer who accidentally poisoned his entire party and I thought they all found suitable donors but it turns out I'd misremembered. He ended up getting a kidney from his DD.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 20/08/2023 13:06

Thanks op!

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/08/2023 13:17

@IveHadItUpToHere Re: the mushroom poisoning there really hasn’t been any new news or updates. It has said that it will be a lengthy investigation. I keep checking because I really hope that Ian gets a donated liver soon and makes a full recovery.

As for the Letby case, I have been following that too. And I must admit, initially I thought that she might be innocent because she just didn’t look like someone who was a murderer. Then I read about her conviction and some of the other damming evidence. I can’t deny her guilt.

Goes to show that appearances can be deceiving. Letby looked like a genuine caring person. Turns out that she is a cold blooded killer.

Then there are people who have been innocent of the charges laid against them but who look like they are guilty.

Lindy Chamberlain was regarded by the media and the majority of the community as guilty because of her looks and her demeanour. Turned out that she was innocent.

So, time will tell with Erin Patterson. It’s probably a good thing that the investigation is lengthy and carefully executed.

Just checking in so I don’t lose the new thread. I saw mention at the end of the last one tbag there have been vigils for the surviving victim. Is his condition worsening? 😢

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 20/08/2023 15:32

Thanks for the new thread.

are the Aussie media reporting how sick Ian is? So I know he needs a liver transplant, but can he go home while waiting? Is he conscious?

There’s been very little this week. The last word was that he was ‘improving’ but still very ill.

I don't have any detail about his condition but Catholics and Baptists love a vigil so it doesn't necessarily mean his condition has deteriorated.

FallingStar21 · 20/08/2023 22:12

@ImustLearn2Cook thanks for part 2 of the thread.
Looks and media can be deceiving yes, but I think Lindy's case was vastly different from this one. We know for sure that Patterson has lied about 2 very big things: 1) Where she got the mushrooms (an Asian shop she can't remember the name or location of, with no other reports of store--bought death caps/people being poisoned?) and 2) The Dehydrator (until the police got hold of it, then of course she had to change her tune). These are pretty damning! Then the fact about her children and herself being unaffected. The possibility she didn't do it or didn't do it intentionally is close to zero, in my opinion.

SlightlyJaded · 20/08/2023 22:15

Also checking in. Thanks for the thread.

And just to add to your list @FallingStar21 - the previous alleged incidents of supposed attempted poisoning....

velvetandsatin · 21/08/2023 00:10

There is an episode of the tv show "Under Investigation" this week on air in Australia on the case. Even if all they do is speculate on currently known facts, it puts the pressure on EP further. She has been shown to crack under the pressure of public specualtion and blurt things to the press like the no-tears crying door-stop, or issue daft statements that show up her lies, or even admit previous lies.

Interestingly, the episode on the missing and thought murdered older campers, Carol Clay and Russell Hill, seemed to play a part in tightening the screws on their murderer who was not that long after charged and brought to trial.

echt · 21/08/2023 06:00

Thanks for the new thread, @ImustLearn2Cook It's so rare for Aussie threads, even the ones entirely based on slagging off Australia, reach a respectable page count. Obviously the circumstances are regrettable, but needs must.

Opinion from a group of friends I met yesterday was that EP was playing a blinder, i.e such a numpty that no-one would really take suspicions seriously.

Dustyblue · 21/08/2023 07:31

Well, this was unexpected. We saw Erin in the supermarket last night.

I mentioned previously that she owns multiple properties across Gippsland. It would seem she's staying in one of them, a fair way from Leongatha, and she did a grocery shop in between.

Nobody approached her, although many did a double take and whispered to each other. Before you ask, NO there were no mushrooms in her trolley (yes I scrutinized her trolley).

I was almost waiting for some smart-arse to walk up and say something stupid, but nobody did.

Innocent until proven guilty!

Sorry but that made me laugh! You are so correct. Nothing like a good vigil.

Oblomov23 · 21/08/2023 08:05

Thanks. Interested in Mushroom and Letby cases.

Bruisername · 21/08/2023 08:50

That man must have some level of mental illness.

poor ducks

Dustyblue · 21/08/2023 09:33

Oh my that made me laugh this morning. Then again it is Frankston, anything goes!

Just back to the tv series "Under Investigation" who are reportedly doing a program on this- I can't find a screening date- urgh, it will be terrible viewing.

They'll re-hash every last point already reported, around a big table in a dark room with bright lights when they come to a 'key' point. Horrible telly, truly.

Total derail, but the same program covered the 'Mr Cruel" case, which haunts me still. I wanted to throw things at Liz Hayes and her crew, it was an insult to the families involved.

However, perhaps this is how Vic Police put the pressure on?

ImustLearn2Cook · 21/08/2023 11:01

@FallingStar21 yes you are right, the Lindy Chamberlain case was very, very different. The only similarity is the trial by media and the majority consensus of guilty.

And I agree, there is a lot that makes Erin look guilty of deliberate poisoning.

I am trying to keep an open mind though, until the police conclude their investigation.
