The mushroom poisoning in Vic.... I am gripped - Part 2

ImustLearn2Cook · 20/08/2023 00:38

Hi everyone, Aussie Mumsnetter here. As some have requested a new thread be started by an Aussie I decided to do it.

I am still gripped by this case and like many, I am awaiting updates of new information.

Will a matching donor for a liver for Ian be found soon? I hope he makes a full recovery.

Will he be able to shed new light on the lunch they all shared?

And of course is she guilty of deliberately poisoning them or was it an innocent mistake?

Anyway, we've already seen what she has to say for herself, twice. Once to the media, after the lunch, and during the trial when the court was shown her police interview - lies, more lies, and selfpity.

EleanorReally · 03/06/2025 05:27

from the facebook group

  • Mushroom dehydrator: Another member of the same group, Daniela Barkley, said Ms Patterson had been "excited" about buying a dehydrator, and the jury was shown several images shared with the group, which showed mushrooms drying on the metal racks of the appliance

how will she explain this?

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 03/06/2025 06:24

She says she saw her dog eating a wild mushroom and wondered if it was poisonous.

I wonder if that’s an excuse for any google searches about poisonous mushrooms. I just don’t believe it, I’ve never known dogs eat mushrooms. My current dog will eat pretty much anything offered, cucumber, peppers, strawberries…..she won’t eat mushroom.

EleanorReally · 03/06/2025 06:29

no my dog wouldnt either

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 03/06/2025 06:42

I have a female relative who has similar reactions to things.

Huge mistrust of medical staff - they going to operate on her son wrong leg, everything is a battle, she always knows best and will eventually be proved right. I have accompanied her to some appointments and it was hard work.

Plus she also assumes malaise rather that normal human mistakes. So she would have reacted exactly the same with a missed invite. Assumed that meant she wasn’t wanted.

Pretty sure she hasn’t poisoned anyone though.

We’ve received less than ideal treatment from the health service here; my young DS waited years for urgent treatment which should have been done within a few months, and as a result he now needs surgery to repair what never would have needed fixing if he’d had the treatment on time.

I’ve had two occasions where symptoms were dismissed by doctors; one ended up with needing emergency surgery weeks later and another with needing a month of intensive hospital treatments, which I wouldn’t have needed at all had the GP prescribed antibiotics at my first visit (and they didn’t even take me seriously on the 2nd visit - I had to tell them what I thought it was after googling, they got a second opinion, agreed and referred me straight to hospital!).

Now I read up on possibilities before I see a GP, as I placed too much trust in them before, and I’ve realised that although they have the best of intentions they don’t know everything. I still listen politely to what they have to say, as I did before, but I can ask if it could be xyz if they’re puzzled (I rarely need to do that as they do take us more seriously now - they refer my DS straight to a specialist hospital dept with the correct equipment if they aren’t sure what’s going on).

That was long winded, and I can understand her general health anxiety; it sounds like she had a similar experience with being dismissed then them finding out there had been something wrong all along. However if I were told I could have been exposed to a deadly mushroom and knowing how ill the others were I would be wanting to stay in and have all the tests in the world before being discharged! Especially as a mother to young children. If all the mushrooms had been prepared together for all the wellingtons and it was accidental then she would have had just as much chance of being exposed to them.

I just don’t believe any of it, there have already been too many confirmed lies.

velvetandsatin · 03/06/2025 08:48

I wonder how she thought it would work studying nursing, with her fear and distrust of and dislike of hospitals... and urges to self-discharge!

ladeluge · 03/06/2025 09:36

When is she due to speak in court?

Dustyblue · 03/06/2025 09:36

Hmm, yes it's not too bad.

However, as a local I feel compelled to point out that the Sentinel Times would report on two dogs fighting over a bone in the street. Or, a snake in basket outside a shop. These are not fantastic journalists.

^That's my kind of story! Just saw a segment on the news about an elephant who wandered into a convenience store in Thailand and ate all the snacks...

DigbyTheDigger · 03/06/2025 11:05

Oh yes! Snake in a basket outside a shop would be very exciting in the UK. As would an elephant in a corner shop, to be fair.

Is the Australian Woolworth's connected to the UK one? Former purveyor of pick'n'mix and posters of Kajagoogoo? If so, maybe ours would still be with us if it had sold mushrooms. 🤔

Dustyblue · 03/06/2025 12:26

OK, I am itching for the prosecutions chance to cross-examine this.

Thatsnotmynamee · 03/06/2025 12:33

Me too!! I'm weary of Erin's life story and tiny violin at this point. Time to grill her!

I was wondering this too about Woolworths!

Woolies is not connected to the UK Woolworths. It’s one of the two biggest supermarket chains in Australia. I guess equivalent to Tesco or Sainsbury’s.

DigbyTheDigger · 03/06/2025 14:13

Thanks!

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 03/06/2025 14:42

Yeah, i think if she’d said fair doos, I foraged and I must have messed up … then cooperated with locations / dehydrator handover etc asap. That would have been more consistent with a mistake.

I agree. Instead of trying to blame it on a shop that she can’t conveniently can’t remember.

With the lying to get them to attend the lunch in the first place, it really doesn’t come across as an accident.

not to mention making a mushroom duxelle where only the guest portions are contaminated with death caps.

That could have been explained by not having enough duxelle to fill all the individual pastries and so making an extra plainer (non foraged) one and making sure she gave it to herself, as it wouldn't taste as good. She really didn't seem to think her story through

Apparently the Aus supermarket chain just piggybacked the well-known but unprotected American name, as a dare!

There are Woolworths shops in Germany (related to the American chain). They sell really cheap clothes, household stuff and random confectionery and soda.
