For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

Thank you. Nothing to report here!

Julieju1 · 31/05/2025 16:08

Currently blue linen trousers. First time I've seen a fly opening. Looking good so far.
Next will be denim trousers and denim jacket, not sure what style yet.

PickAChew · 31/05/2025 16:12

Just parking my bag on my seat.

Needed a new shopping bag and a mindless project for half term so made use of the freebie Orton bag pattern I got from M&M a few years ago and a metre of £5 cotton canvas from Pound Fabrics.

Thanks for the new thread. I'm still vicariously enjoying everyone else's makes while trying to create space here to get on with some of my own.

Isabelle70 · 31/05/2025 18:03

I have been on holiday this week so tidied my sewing machine away and now I need it back out to make some garden cushions!

ClearHoldBuild · 31/05/2025 18:35

Just delivered yesterday two lots of fabric, three patterns, bias binding, invisible zip and some trim.
As the advert in the 80s said “I can give up any time I like” 🙄

Brefugee · 01/06/2025 10:38

thanks for the new thread. Still nothing to report here. Have done some alterations for both (adult) DD and even for me.
Still working up to finishing a toile of a toile of a dress i started ages ago. (the first toile is horribly fraying round the edges, so i am using some greatly reduced in in price fabric to make another toile. But have lost momentum and it seems to be the wrong kind of fabric.

twobluechickens · 01/06/2025 10:39

Hello all! Place marking as I’m on holiday and won’t be doing any sewing for a few weeks. Almost finished yet another pair of Ash jeans, just got the hems to do and the button. Then I’m going to make a few light summer tops.

Jins · 01/06/2025 11:01

But of placemarking here as I’m between holidays 🤣. Off again Friday for a week.

Altered swimwear from last year held up to the challenge apart from one tankini bottom which was a bit loose for swimming. I’m altering it today and putting a channel with cord at the sides so I can gather them. High waisted bottoms weren’t as evident this year but it’s useful to have the option.

After that my machines will be cleaned, oiled and covered awaiting my return

OperationalSupport · 01/06/2025 14:34

Well done @NutellaEllaElla i was struggling to think of another sewing pun.

I finally made something this week for the first time in ages, and it was mostly a success. It was the Tammy Handmade Etty camisole, which I’ve done a full bust adjustment on, and changed the construction order a bit to make neater insides. I also skipped the scallops and just made it as a scoop/gentle b neckline for speed.
I need to shorten the straps next time I make it, but I do think I’ll make it again.

Next up is an alteration on a linen top I bought last year, the neckline is a bit high for my liking so I’ll be cutting it off and rebinding it.

ClearHoldBuild · 01/06/2025 15:13

Urgh! I’ve just realised that I have made a stupid error. Making McCalls 7948 and I’ve just realised that I have put the yoke on back to front so the button fastening that should be at the back is now an opening at the front? I figure I have two options. Unpick the bodice so I can use the uncut back and sleeves, cut out a new front piece and remake the bodice. Or… cut two thin straps and add them to the top of the opening so that I can do them up in a bow at the front.
I’m so annoyed with myself.

ClearHoldBuild · 01/06/2025 15:44

Panic over the tie front looks good 👍

Yay! That’s a relief.

Thanks for the compliments about the puns, it amuses me to think of them.

I’ve packed all my sewing, knitting and crochet stuff up in boxes as I’m moving in a few weeks and need to concentrate on being a fully functional adult for a while. But I’m vicariously crafting through your posts. Looking forward to unpacking everything in the future and making again.

PickAChew · 02/06/2025 23:50

I hope you have a nice sewing corner in your new place, @Sminty2

Castlerigg · 05/06/2025 09:10

Just found the new thread, despite having been tagged! Thank you @NutellaEllaElla.

I love that moth / butterfly fabric @PickAChew, your bag looks great.

I took apart the charity shop jacket - it really was very well made indeed, I briefly felt bad again. There wasn’t as much useable fabric as I expected because of seams, interfacing etc, but there’s enough. I started making the hat, it’s a bit small around the circumference, so I’ve unpicked a bit and will re-sew with smaller seam allowance. The pattern was from a YouTube video, it gave no sizes so it was a bit of guesswork. If it’s still too small it’ll go back to the charity shop as a hat.

Thank you for the new thread NutellaEllaElla
Sad news PickAChew , though to be honest , I tend to use online patterns now , which may be the problem ?
Been MIA since before Easter - such a lot on my plate , so the sewing had to be put to one side.
After Easter , I cut out sunhats for my twin DGD's , and sorted out with DGS making him a sweatshirt from one of the panels I had left from some Marvel heroes - he chose Spiderman ,( on French Terry ) and then asked for a coloured stripe down the sleeve to pick out one of the colours on Spiderman 🙄. Finally got around to cutting out and sewing the sweatshirt after searching online for plain black terry , and the stripe colour for the rest of it . I today got it made up to putting the neckband on ( using french terry , not ribbing )and I have cut it about 1cm too short - it will not go on . So tonight is unpicking what I have already sewn on . I have checked the measurements , I cut it out right , but I suspect the french terry hasn't as much stretch as the fabric I normally buy .Curses - its black thread on black , and a triple stretch stitch .
Hoping I can get back into more regular sewing now life has eased a bit - I have a long to do list!

Castlerigg · 06/06/2025 19:39

I finished the hat made from reclaimed fabric from a charity shop jacket. It’s too small for me around the circumference, but it’ll fit someone. I’ll send it back to the charity shop. There might be a small Victorian child in need of a hat, it’ll be ideal. I didn’t pay attention to the grain on the peak, and it looks a slightly weird shape, but that might be an optical illusion because of the pattern. I’m going to try another one with a different pattern.

I LOVE it. As somebody with a ridiculously small head, I always tend to have the opposite problem!

PickAChew · 06/06/2025 20:57

That's a rather cute 'at. It would just perch right on top of my massive' eed, though 😂

Castlerigg · 06/06/2025 22:04

Thank you both. I am rather petite of cranium myself - 55cm / 21.5”. It does just about fit on my head, but realistically could do with being looser. So @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie if your head is smaller than mine, and you would like the ‘at, you’re welcome to it.
