For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

I found you again! 😊

I came back from holiday with some renewed enthusiasm and bought myself the Maison Fauve Calypso pattern. Hopefully it won’t end up on the pile of jacket patterns I love, but will probably never make…how many jacket patterns does anyone really need?!

PickAChew · 16/06/2025 12:54

Many.

I have at least 6. I've made one of them

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/06/2025 18:27

The Tilly tiered skirt pattern arrived. It does have some shaping, rather than just rectangles and looks as if the top tier is quite body skimming before the lower tiers add bulk. The waistband is also constructed as a separate piece, rather than the top tier folded over, so I do think it will be a bit nicer than one I could self draft with my current skill set.

You might be right @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. We might be miniscule-head-twins. But not quite minuscule enough for the ‘at. Maybe I’ll try the Oliver songs and see if it makes a difference. I’ll report back. In all seriousness, perhaps a steam and a stretch might do the trick. Worth a go.

Just catching up with the thread and this made me laugh. I’ve always known that I have a large noggin, just measured it out of interest and it’s 57cm which compared to yours seems freakishly large.

bookbook · 16/06/2025 22:55

catching up here . I had to stop after unpicking and cutting a new neckband on my DGS’s sweatshirt - I have been waiting for a minor eye op , and got called in after a cancellation . But I finally finished it today . Its not my favourite make , but he chose the stripe down the sleeve , and the colour 😊That has now freed me up to get the sunhats sewn up for my DGT s , ready for the summer holidays

Same size head here! Inherited my massive feet and head from my dad. Makes finding sunhats quite tricky.

InMySpareTime · 17/06/2025 08:30

My head’s only 54cm, I feel inadequately skulled. Most hats kind of perch on my ears.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 17/06/2025 08:54

I'm attempting to wing it with a shirred cami top cos nothing I can find online quite fits my mental vision of it - however I couldn't be arsed to shir the lines straight and now I'm regretting my life choices and know the inevitable date with the stitch ripper is looming.

I also can't do shirring on my uber modern sewing machine - so the 1946 Singer comes into service! Apparently I'm acquiring another vintage Singer this week from my boss - they seem to find me now I've done one up.

i only know my hat size in old money - 6 7/8
I think i still have one of the old-style riding hats floating around in that size.

InMySpareTime · 17/06/2025 16:38

That sent me down a hat sizing rabbit hole and now I feel even more pinheaded. I hope this sizing conversion chart is an adult men’s one, otherwise I’m an XXXS and off the chart.

Jins · 17/06/2025 17:18

My head is 54cm as well. I’ll join the pin head gang

Brefugee · 17/06/2025 18:13

excellent chart! i see i'm an XS. That will come as a massive surprise to my family!

NutellaEllaElla · 17/06/2025 20:41

You lot made me go measure my head. I, too, am 54. I knew I had a small head because Christmas hats always slide down my face. 😥

OP posts:
PickAChew · 17/06/2025 21:10

They slide down my head and it's massive with even bigger hair. Not sure who they make them for!

InMySpareTime · 17/06/2025 22:05

That’s why I made felt Christmas hats for everyone, so we’d all have embroidered hats made to measure our vastly different sized heads.

PickAChew · 17/06/2025 22:36

That would be lovely but totally wasted on my lot. 3 grown men. Two definitely don't do hats of my sort for any reason. DH reluctantly plays along. Sometimes.

Castlerigg · 17/06/2025 22:45

Christmas hats are always gigantic!

HollyBerryz · 17/06/2025 22:57

Hi everyone, I bought a lovely muslin/cheesecloth top in asda today that fits me perfectly. I want to use it to make my own pattern but I'm unsure how I account for the darts sewn into it whilst drawing up a pattern, can anyone point me in the right direction to a tutorial or anything. Thanks :)

<cries>

Not on me they aren’t! And my riding hat was 7 1/4, so my head is even bigger than I thought! Just call me Frank Sidebottom.

There's a book on cloning your own clothes that goes into all that. There are videos with it so you might be able to find some of those

My aunt and my husband have to tear them a bit to make them fit!

i do think it's vaguely amusing that the two of us who know our hat size in old money know it from riding hats!

It occurs to me that i measured my head last year to make a bucket hat, i used a Waves & Wild pattern so i must have seen at the time how big/small my head is and not even registered it!

Jins · 18/06/2025 08:26

I made two bucket hats last year so must have measured twice at least but both ended up too big. The waves and wild one was better than the merchant and mills but still not ideal. I’ve bodged them with some elastic as they are after all only bucket hats.

DH has a very small head as well. He’s very fond of a supermarket straw trilby type hat in the summer nowadays but it’s very rare to find one the right size. I ought to measure his head as my summer hats fit him pretty well

Brefugee · 18/06/2025 09:03

i have a friend, adult, who has an incredibly small head - she swims but has to use children's (and small children's ones at that) goggles

it is rare that they don't have mermaids or sharks & pirates printed on the straps.

I did know mine but had forgotten it. I learnt it while working in a suit hire place in the summer hols, as a student. Many a disgutingly hot August day checking over, pressing and packing orders, adjusting leg length up or down, if needed. And trying on the top hats 😂
