For sewists old and new. Join the fun, let us know what you're working on.
I apologise for not having been around at all. I've been away all footloose and fancy free but now i'm back and have NO NEED TO BUY NEW FABRIC. I must use what I have.

The paperbag waist is easy to achieve on other elasticated patterns - it just involves making the waistband a couple of cm wider and stitching 1cm from the fold (or change the numbers to suit) before attaching it.

alianangel · 12/06/2025 20:04

I’ve just found this thread and am enjoying seeing your makes; hopefully you won’t mind me joining in.
I’ve almost finished making a pair of palazzo pants, just need to put the elastic in the waistband and hem the legs. I’ve used a mango silk fabric which is lovely but frays really badly.

Gorgeous fabric @alianangel ! Welcome to the thread.

I’m away until Saturday but am looking forward to seeing my sewing machine almost as much as I’m looking forward to seeing my cat! Got a few patterns printed before I left so need to match those to my fabric stash. Also got a few WIPs that I want to progress.

twobluechickens · 13/06/2025 12:18

I’m at a train station making notes on a beautiful linen shirt a woman nearby is wearing. I’ve no idea where she’s from (am abroad somewhere v multicultural) so can’t ask her if I can take her photo 😂

TorturedParentsDepartment · 14/06/2025 12:24

I'm alternating between finishing a scrap box emptying quilt as a quilt as you go one, and making a minidress (well I'll wear it as a tunic) version of the Snow top - wrap top and they're a style that always suit me. Least this time I'm not making it out of horrid fraying seersucker gingham (the gingham bit was fine but OMG the fabric was horrid to work with).

Then I have some really cute girl-dinosaur duvet cover bits that I might make a top out of - probably yet another Samara top because again I like the fit and arm length on that.

Got a sewing projector set up as well!

alianangel · 14/06/2025 12:49

@TorturedParentsDepartment I use a projector for sewing, I absolutely love it! What sort have you got?

Welshywitch · 14/06/2025 13:00

Another newbie here.
Currently making some new curtains for bathroom which should be finished today.
Just finished 2 tops for my great granddaughter

Because our walls are either crumbly or made of flipping kevlar or something here (joys of a 1910s house) I can't easily wall/ceiling mount - so I went for a Kodak short throw one that I can mount on a clamp pole clamped onto a Kallax unit which is working out OK. Was costing me so much in sellotape that I figured I'd save the cost back there!

I don’t miss taping patterns together! Kallax units, what would we do without them? I have a UST on my window ledge as I don’t have the ceiling heights for a short throw, much as I would have loved one.

Bingo, I knew I’d seen a very similar pattern, and even better: it’s free! https://blog.fabrics-store.com/2018/03/20/the-relaxed-linen-shirt-tutorial/

Jade Relaxed Linen Shirt Tutorial and Free Pattern

In a closet full of different styles, the white linen shirt is the very definition of a wardrobe staple. Paired easily with anything from jeans to trousers or a simple skirt, it instantly adds a touch of sophistication and cool masculinity. And even th...

And welcome @Welshywitch !

PickAChew · 14/06/2025 21:59

And a freebie, too!

Tip - sew the buttonholes as early as you can get away with. The less weight and stuff to catch, the less likely to get a freak one.

Welshywitch · 14/06/2025 22:23

Thank you

MarmiteWine · 15/06/2025 10:00

Has anyone made the Winslow Culottes from Helen's Closet? I'm thinking the wrap version may work in one of the bargain M&S linen sheets from last year.

Jins · 15/06/2025 12:03

Thanks for the shirt pattern link - right up my street that one!

Back from my hols and pleased to report that my altered swimwear stood up to the test but I really need to make a better fitting one piece. I’ve got a pile of repairs and alterations to get on with then I’m planning on a sewing binge while the weather is good. I like making summer clothes. I’ve sorted a pile of viscose out of my stash and it will be made into something.

NutellaEllaElla · 15/06/2025 17:32

Thanks @twobluechickens, I love me a linen shirt, and a free pattern.

Welcome @alianangel i'm really interested in your palazzo pants. Have dreamed of making my own one day.

Hello - I hope you don't mind my coming onto the thread to see if anyone can help.

I'm looking for a pattern for a dress I made about 8 years ago and have mislaid. I bought it at John Lewis so it would be a mainstream brand. The dress was a swing/tent/trapeze style with no sleeves and a high stand collar. It was a maxi dress and the main part was cut straight across so that the hem dipped down at either side and then there was a shaped tier that infilled to level out the hem a bit. Does it ring any bells with anyone? The dress was a bit like this Burda pattern but more flowy as the cut was a triangle rather than straight? https://www.burdastyle.uk/muslin-dress-124-burda-style-04-24.html

My daughter has decided she wants another one for her graduation but I can't find the pattern anywhere......

This might be useful. It's tricky to use - you need to make sure you de-select any if you're selecting for year, for example, but it has a huge database of patterns. Yours sounds like the sort of thing Vogue might produce.

OK, just realised it only goes to 2014 but it was still worth sharing.

Londonmummy66 · 15/06/2025 21:00

@PickAChew - thank you - that neckline is right but the shape is wrong as the dress DD wants was much less clingy. I've just checked and I bought the pattern in the summer of 2016 - is there a way of searching pattern catalogues by year?

PickAChew · 15/06/2025 21:15

I dint think there is fir newer patterns @Londonmummy66 but it night ve worth browsing all the big 4 at sew direct as they're the official distributors in this country so carry the biggest range.

Londonmummy66 · 15/06/2025 21:16

Thank you - will try - I know that the pattern only had sketches rather than photos on the front so it will be a bit easier to narrow down.

Jins · 16/06/2025 10:21

I bought the Ultimate Sewing Handbook last month because I liked the look of the paper patterns but I’ve just got round to flicking through it and there are some really nice pdf patterns including an itch to stitch one. There’s the usual dross but definitely a couple of dresses and a wrap jumpsuit are calling me.

Download link

There’s some wide leg trousers they’ve described as elegant but the photos aren’t great 😊

Spent yesterday finishing off my latest pair of jeans and sorting out a couple of newish things that didn’t fit properly and are now spot on - very pleased. Tonight I’m planning to make a copy of a favourite t-shirt and a comfy basic sports bra/bralette that is on its last legs.
