Stitch and bitch thread #9. I have pressing concerns

Welcome welcome!

I've not made anything for ages after I screwed up the same thing twice. I'm gonna have another blimmin crack at it though! I've reconnected with another hobby and work is seriously getting in the way of everything I want to do, darn it.

I made a toile for the Sew House 7 Free Range Slacks and ended up adding 8 inches (!) to the length. I don’t get it. The inseam on the original pattern is supposed to be 27 inches. I do not have 35 inch legs, so WTF is going on?

While I’m on the subject, isn’t it a bit odd that while pattern companies have got a lot better at catering for different sizes, they sort of ignore that people are different heights? Making adjustments for being taller isn’t always as easy as adding a few inches. Sigh!

twobluechickens · 27/05/2024 12:40

Amen to that! I was genuinely surprised that the jumpsuit I’ve just made was long enough and didn’t need any additional length adding. I think it’s because you can wear the legs rolled up, but even so I was pleased 😁 Most patterns I need to add at least a couple of inches, if not more (am 5’10).

PickAChew · 27/05/2024 12:57

One of the issues with different heights is that people are longer or shorter in different places. I'm 5'4 and short of limb but long in the body and my natural waist is very high so petite fit trousers don't fit me.

And changing the length of a pattern, even in multiple places, is mostly simpler than creating (or removing) room for lumps and bumps. I did buy a Bella Loves shirt pattern in the 5'3 fit, rather than 5'7 fit, though, adjusting the neckline/ armholes/ sleeve heads can be a lot more involved, particularly with a shirt or blouse.

New dress: my first try with stretch viscose

Very nice. How frayed are your nerves after grappling with it?

NutellaEllaElla · 27/05/2024 17:00

Yay! well done @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie . You should be very proud of it.

I've completed my padded lens pouch. I've started a little production line to complete 3 more. I'm stopping for the day now though. Here's a pic of the fruits of my bh weekend, water bottle holder and lens pouch.

Shall we just quit our jobs/other responsibilities and dedicate all our time to sewing and other hobbies?

Thank you for the new thread.

That is my plan for retirement. Potter round the allotment in the morning then sew in the afternoon. I will add a bit of home brew and jam making to split things up.

I think I really have finished my holiday sewing now. An extra top, 'free' because I had fabric, thread and pattern already. Also a new toiletries bag because all the old ones were lost or declared 'too small' by DH.

Lovely dress @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie . It's a really good fit on you.

Very smart bag making there@NutellaEllaElla .

kittykarate · 27/05/2024 17:33

Lovely dress @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie ! You must be so proud.

I managed to do my repairs, and made the Tinley shorts in some fabric that I didn't like in slightest. I'd make them again in good stuff, I like the full short option much more than I expected. The crap fabric continued to be crap and seemed to delight in sticking in the overlocker. It's all gone now anyhow.

@Spaceman101 that’s beautiful! What’s the pattern?
I'm currently cutting and sticking a PDF (the Maison Fauve Tilda blouse)

Thank you it's the Aria bow dress by The Simple Life pattern company

NutellaEllaElla · 25/05/2024 07:42

Welcome @Spaceman101 and I love that dress! I often think that kids get the best, most fun clothing.

I know the kids get all the best stuff! I have altered a pattern over the weekend in the hope of hacking an adult version.

Spaceman101 · 27/05/2024 17:52

Brefugee · 25/05/2024 09:58

that's lovely @Spaceman101 i had such fun making clothes for my DDs when they were small. and once i found a good pattern i made it in many many variations. I don't have many pictures, unfortunately.

Yes I have my favourite patterns but sometimes try and stretch myself. I'm making sure I take a photo of everything I make this year 😄

PickAChew · 27/05/2024 18:06

Fab pouches (glad I could use my maths skillz) and I love that sunflower bag! I have only just managed to cut out a Donny shirt and apply interfacing, over the long weekend. Both my back and ds2 had other ideas.

Rosenspants · 27/05/2024 19:53

All the non clothing makes look highly professional and marketable! @Spaceman101 that child’s dress is beautiful! @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie Love the sleeves on that dress. You’re giving me confidence as I have not yet ventured into stretch! It should be my next challenge, I think.
I have been away for the weekend so no sewing since last week. However I continued to wrestle with the all in one facing on the Jemima dress and with the help of a friend, it’s now not bad. Joining the bodice to the skirt … I’ve had to deal with a bad pucker on one side which I’ve now unpicked and re-pinned. Thinking I might hand stitch it. Then the hem and that’ll be it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/05/2024 19:58

To be honest, the stretch viscose was much easier to sew with than cheap viscose from the market.

I'm pleased with the fit, although it needed the waist ties to make it fit so well. And for some reason, they're working much better tied at the front than the back.

Not 100% sure on the length, but think it'll be good for work.

Spaceman101 · 27/05/2024 20:14

I've only ever sewn stretch, I'm too much of a wimp to try woven. Red dress looks great.

twobluechickens · 27/05/2024 22:37

Fantastic makes everyone! I’ve decided to make a tie belt to go with my jumpsuit at tomorrow’s sewing social so will post pics when it’s done. I’ve also cut out a top based on the Tessuti Pia dress and the pattern pieces for the Style Arc Petra coat; have slightly altered the neckline so it sits higher, so we’ll see how that looks when I do a toile. It’s been a weekend of gardening and sewing and I must say that I could definitely keep myself quite entertained in retirement if this weekend is anything to go by.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 29/05/2024 10:20

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie that dress is beautiful!

I finished my quilt top, decided I hated it and am now unpicking the entire thing while awaiting some different fabric to replace the one I don't like. I have a day off tomorrow so hoping to cut out and make a start either on attempt 2 of the top or the dress pattern I bought.
I have been very organised and washed the fabric ready

bookbook · 29/05/2024 17:20

I have managed a bit of time this week . Yesterday I cut out a school sunhat for DGS , and 2 baby outfits - (over it alls and a pair of leggings ) . Today I managed to get the hat made, ready for the sun 😂, and will get the others made up in the next couple of days. The hat just needs a good press now - it was heavyish cotton drill my daughter sourced .

Thank you @Allthegoodnamestakken I’m honestly amazed that I’m actually producing such things!

SewingBees · 29/05/2024 18:40

Hi all, can I join your thread? It might give me the kick I need to finish some UFOs.

Recent makes - the Haralson Bag by Noodlehead with internal modifications to carry passports. I was really pleased to find gorgeous bronze coloured hardware to match the Ruby Star Society speckled fabric I wanted to use up. And a small quilt/play mat for my new Great Nephew - will be gifted on Saturday.

Next I need to start and finish a boiled wool shacket to go with a lovely maxi dress I made a few weeks ago - no photos yet but I was really pleased with the fit and have fabric ready to make another.

Lovely to see new people joining us!

I am thinking of making a workwear-type jacket for summer evenings, possibly the Closet Core Sienna or the Fabrics Store Paola. Any other suggestions?

I fancy making it in a washed or brushed canvas, colour blocking it like the ones made by Slow Goods Studio. Dalston Mill have some heavyweight canvas which looks good, but again suggestions welcome!

GnomeDePlume · 30/05/2024 10:07

@twobluechickens I have used their soft canvas for curtain making and also made shorts from it. It is a fairly rigid fabric and not softening after several washes.

I made a lined jacket from their loomstate drill which I dyed to the colour I wanted. It is a good heavy fabric with a softer, slightly peach skin feel.
