I had a rational conversation with an elderly lady on the train last night when I whipped it out and started KIP, for a change.
Her grown-up dd thinks home-knits don't really suit her little dgs but her older dgs, a teenager, begged her to knit him a Starsky cardigan - so she did

harpsichordcarrier · 21/02/2007 08:54

there used to be a woman at my choir who would KIP during rehearsals
it was mildly irritating tbh

Marina · 21/02/2007 08:56

I'd agree totally were it not for the fact that I wish some of our choir members (parish, strictly amateur) would knit instead of the alternative. They think it is OK to gossip, crack fingernails and consume snacks during ours

wartywarthog · 21/02/2007 12:23

bleurghg i wish i could knit during my rehearsals but my hands are otherwise occupied! never thought i'd envy a singer

wartywarthog · 21/02/2007 19:43

erm didn't mean to offend in that last post! used to work in an opera orchestra.

twospecialgirls · 26/08/2007 23:04

im 24 and i knit and crochet im public and proudly to i think its great even got dd a knitting set and shes only 3

GreebosWhiskers · 27/08/2007 23:22

I knit/crochet on the train. Went to a knit n natter last week & there was a 6th year girl there so that's what 16/17? She was knitting a gorgeous cabled cardi too - was so

Twinklemegan · 27/08/2007 23:26

Would be too embarassed to knit in public. I was amazed, and relieved, when I joined MN that there were knitting threads. I thought I was some kind of desperate weirdo.

hatwoman · 27/08/2007 23:30

I think it's ok. as long as it's not lentils...

Aitch · 27/08/2007 23:31

haven't read the thread but i'd say it's very cool to knit in public. except perhaps at the foot of a guillotine.

lucykate · 27/08/2007 23:33

dh's stepfather is rachael matthews's uncle (she of knitorama fame)

thelady · 27/08/2007 23:47

If you would feel comfortable chatting, then I see no reason not to KIP. If you'd be frowned on for chatting (e.g. concert, church, formal situation) then I wouldn't.

I knitted through most commutes. I knit in the pub (I run one) when it's quiet...

Gingermonkey · 28/08/2007 09:25

I don't knit but I sew, and I take my sewing on the train and away with me. And if anyone comes round to my house they have to put up with me sewing whilst they talk to me

lucykate · 28/08/2007 11:57

i take my sewing everywhere, but i can't do it in the car, otherwise i get travel sick, which is a shame. we travel a lot to visit family and friends so it would be a great time to do it while the kids are happy in the back watching a dvd (portable dvd player has revolutionised long journeys for us!)

littlemisssensible · 28/08/2007 15:37

Both DH and I knit in public. People seem to be more accepting of me, he gets lots of strange looks and rude comments! Particularly from Big Butch Men who think he's letting the side down!

bundle · 28/08/2007 15:39

I was knitting on the piccadilly line this morning

ScottishMummy · 28/08/2007 15:45

as a non knitter o absolutley i am jealous beats reading the metro

rantinghousewife · 28/08/2007 19:59

I knit in public, I'm so shameless about it that I encouraged a friend of mine to do her cross stitch in public to.
Mind you my crocheting was the subject of a lot of interest from 2 small children on the ferry to france, they could not stop staring. (Maybe it was just because I wasn't wearing any mascara tho')

Erm, am I missing something... WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE UNACEPTABLE ABOUT KNITTING IN PUBLIC????

Lol @ pruners. Actually I think with the recycle/sweatshop thing, younger people think it's quite a cool thing to do. I've lost count of the number of teenage girls who've asked me what I'm doing. And asked me to show them how.

FREAKshow · 28/08/2007 20:07

Good. Then they edit themselves out and you don't have to waste your time on a bunch of narrow minded tw@*s!
